    If the beldam is a Japanese monster the eyes have another meaning. In Japanese the word for 4 , shi, also means death.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Ooooooh, I had never heard 4 was associated with the word death (and I took Japanese for years in college!). That is very interesting!

    • @StarlasAiko

      Which why Japanese prefer to use yon for 4. Both shi and yon are valid, but one would not want to talk about death.

    Remember at the beginning when Coraline finds the well and drops a rock in it. I feel like it "activated" the other world, letting the beldam know someone is there. That was the first interaction with the other world.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hmm, that is definitely an interesting point! I guess it depends on when you think the doll from the intro is being made. If it was made in the far off past, then Coraline might have activated her own doom!

    Thought I'd share a piece of interesting prop-play in the film, that I never see mentioned.
    After Coraline saves her parents from the otherworld, the snowglobe in which her parents were imprisoned, breaks upon entering the real world. Before embarking on the mission to save her parents, we see that the snowglobe contains two snowbears - and when returning, the snowbears are gone - neat foreshadowing that her parents were in the snowglobe (remember we saw the parents freezing inside the mirror), and a subtle easter egg for good eyes.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What's most interesting is that her parents are shown as snow bears. I thought I recalled them being physically visible in the Other World snow globe. 🤔

    • @slope4772
      @slope4772 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were - what I meant was when she returns, and when the snow globe breaks - it’s here we see that the snow bears have vanished, visually signifying that Coraline released them from their prison, so to speak.

    • @alittleimagination9023
      @alittleimagination9023 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I still never understood how they came back. They came back *through the front door* with snow on them. And Coraline point this out, and its like the parents can't even see it. Plus they obviously forgot about being trapped. So like, could they have actually been there at the end and were brainwashed? Or - Ooooohhh. What if the Beldam and other father switch places with Coraline's real parents. And her parents are trapped forever in the other world.

    Hmm, I think they're both the Beldam and someone else. Just like her fake dad that seemed to care. In faking another face she makes another mind for herself; like a happy me and a sad me, etc, she has a dad-me and a mother-me and a rat-me. All of which seem to have developed their own will. Like the Inside Out movie but with acting like other people.

      The book definitely has some oddities that the movie leaves out. I still never feel like I found a solid answer for what the thing in the corridor was, but it never seemed to be connected directly to the Beldam herself. 🤔

  • @acer0255
    @acer0255 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Maybe "Tails" has a double meaning. Maybe it's a play on words. It could be they also mean tales.
    They're a legion of chattering spies.
    Maybe they pulled Coraline's parents toward The Pink Palace, by whispering tales and influencing their dreams.
    Before, I suggested that Coraline is actually astral projecting I to another realm.
    Did the kids who got taken by The Beldam actually, physically go there, or were they in the ghost form we see them in?
    Why didn't we see Wybee's grandmother's sister?
    Is it because the first time Coraline went through the portal, she never went back?
    Something is missing!
    You've already established that Bobinsky is definitely a dead guy, and the Sisters must be too.
    These characters don't show up until after Coraline goes through the tunnel. When did the grandma show up? Before or after?
    What if she IS the missing sister, but thinks otherwise because The Beldam weaved a specific tale for her?
    What does the doll mean? The Beldam repurposed it to look like Coraline, but who did it look like first?
    Is it a start of a ritual or does it show that she already has her?
    In the movie, are we just watching The Beldam play with toys?
    Or is The Beldam Coraline's super witch, alter ego?
    Remember the ending? It was all in Coraline's head. The garden was in her head, just like everyone and everything happening in the garden.

    The idea that the Beldam could extend her reach to other locations is very creepy, very disturbing, and makes a LOT of sense. I mean, think about it: ambush predators don't just happen upon something and immediately pounce; they hear something, TRACK it, watch, and WAIT for the PERFECT moment. That's EXACTLY what the Beldam did: she heard or sensed prey, tracked it, watched, and waited before finally pouncing

    I wonder if the rats are a fairy sub class like elves or gnomes or some evil form. Irish mythology says fairies went underground into pocket worlds with the rise of humans destroying natural magic, and I heard when fairies die they turn to sand, much like the rat in the movie does. The stuffing that falls out is more sand like then sawdust like. This would make the Beldam a twisted Santa with more sinister plans, needing a child love magic to fuel herself and her rat fairies.

      The Fangirl The Fangirl oooh I shall treat myself, I think it’s time for a trip to hot topic, and I’ll try to draft something together and see how a video goes, really want to dig into it all, especially coraline! But I do have something to challenge one of your theories! I hope you could make a video of this: you say that the beldam can only create carbon copies of people who have already been to the other world, but then I wondered, how can she create a perfect copy of Mel, Charlie, and wybie, I know the doll can see them but she wouldn’t know the full measurements and dimensions of the person, and also, how can she not create replicas of coralines friends in the picture but yet she knows how they sound like, that part doesn’t make sense, and as you say she can only create copies of people who have only been to the other world, so I doubt that Mel, Charlie or wybie have ever been there, especially wybie as his grandma forbid him from even going into the pink palace, what are your thoughts on this, Don’t worry, just wanted to challenge you, I love theorists! Hope you will continue to make coraline theories! And also, when you said the Jones’s are broke and Charlie’s laptop wasn’t a plot hole, in a deleted scene, Mel asks charlie ‘why he doesn’t just get a laptop’ and Charlie replies with ‘what are they giving them away now?’ So your theories are correct again! You are on the theorizers level now! Once again, love this channel!🧡

    I've got an interesting theory about the rat songs. In the book it states the exact lyrics. I listened to the instrumental of the jumping mice scene and found that the beats of the rat's song strangley matched up with the instrumental. In the book, it says the rats were spys for the beldam, and when Coraline entered the other world, the rats sang the song again and Coraline found the tune strangely familiar. There is no correlation to the tune at the beginning of the movie, but I want to do some more investigating lol.

      I actually have not thought about doing that as a stand alone video. It's rare that I react to any other theories, I think the only times I have so far are the Tim Burton Theory, Woody being a prototype, and the King of the Hill Bobby's dad theory (both of which were so bad I couldn't stay quiet!). I know early on I did touch on my thoughts for some of The Theorizer's Coraline theories, but I honestly hate critiquing other people's theories because everyone thinks differently and I am not trying to kick up any more drama for myself lol. I was thinking, you know how you were talking about Wybie and Ms. Lovat being in on Coraline's abduction?
    If this theory isn't correct...
    How did Ms. Lovat explain to Wybie why she needs this doll back, and why exactly he can't be in the Pink Palace? We see in the movie that Wybie is an adventurous kid, and he must've asked his grandma what exactly happened. Did she say simply she was kidnapped? Because most people wouldn't immediately blame a house because of a kidnapping. He probably questioned her and was suspicious, and to a certain extent I think Wybie would've went inside the house without permission if possible.
    I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense, let me know what you think!

    I was on your old theories and it just hit me about what the Beldam is. Clashing with the theorizer saying she once was a human what if the other mother somehow turned into a fairy but since she was not a natural born fairy she had to find something to live off and she found a way to do so by eating off a child's love for a person or parents or like their soles and since she was once a human blinded by human hunger and greed forms into what she is but then fairies trap her and block up the well and i also think that the Beldam once roamed the earth and the fairies just put her down their but she somehow carved a door and made a gateway into the real world but so the fairies couldn't find her she decided to lour children in with games and things that a child would DREAM of so she fools them like it's a dream sequence so they keep on coming back then she lours them in during the day and then SWOOP takes them then when this happened 3 times HUMANS locked her up in their with a key and then the beldam has to live off of her sewing materials to give herself a physical body but if the Beldam dies the HUMAN BODY dies so that magic is still going wonder but the world will become nothing but a white box but if Coraline were to wonder into their and mess with that magic wondering then the Beldam's body will be summoned back but somehow it's fresh and new and not sewing materials and everything comes back. there's my core theory :)

    Have you ever read the poem La Belle Dame sans merci by John Keats? I've always thought the Beldam could be the same or at least similar to the one from the poem. The main difference is in the poem the Belle Dame traps men and not children, but both lure their victims in with love and treats and the latest victim sees the spirits of past victims. It is a short poem so I would suggest checking it out if you haven't.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmm, you know, I don't think it occurred to me that she would have collected 8 eyes at this point (one child eye for each of her spider eyes!). In the book they say "souls," which makes more sense since the movie shows the kids to have 2 eyes turn into 1 spherical object. But, you might be onto something there!

    I think they were just trying to warn Coraline or make her go back to the normal world, since the song isn't the happy type and at that time, the Beldam wasn't angry at her, so she wouldn't want to scare her and plus, Other Wybie and Other Father both tried to help Coraline, so maybe the only real villain is the Beldam.
    Also, that song wouldn't make Coraline want to stay in the other world, or atleast it wouldn't make me want to stay. The song sounds kinda threatening. Another reason why I think this is because they told Bobinsky to warn Coraline about the door.
    I just thought of something kinda sad and dark, yet kinda funny...If we assume that once the Beldam dies, her creations die and if we assume Coraline actually made it out, does that mean that there are tons of little dead rats with sawdust coming out of them in Bobinsky's apartment?

    Despite it being based on the movie, the rats do in fact sing in the DS game. Not the melody, but the dialogue boxes do have it. And since the DS game is more faithful to the movie than the X box game, you could technically use this to bridge this piece of lore in the book and the movie.

    What if all the rats are past beldam's? You said in past videos that the beldam can see into the future and that there is one beldam for each child. When she dies, she has to go somewhere, so what if each beldam turns into rats and that's why they know of the past and future. Thats why they say they were there before Coraline was and be there when she isn't anymore

    Her mom got into an accident what if they’re dead and in purgatory
    Edit: after re watching the movie I think that the family have passed but each in their own way haven’t accepted it. In many mythologies the person who has died has to go through some trial or some level of hell to reach paradise in her case a happy family and getting to be in the garden. For her parents it’s having something successful and not having to worry about money or other things to cause stress in your adult life and the life of being parents. for Coraline she has the other world it’s temptations and it’s challenges to go through to reach what is heaven for her.

    I am thinking of the theory where the belldame is stuck there. Perhaps the rats are a species of a sort of Colo Colo. That a handfull might have somehow became subservient to the Belldame, why there is only a few. (Theoretically)-maybe one of the parents came to the pink palace and one of the rats hitched a ride to see what the personal life of Coraline might be gathering that info. And Depinding if the resident's do leave the premise or if someone goes over towarda the premise to bring new dogs. The colo colo could be sparingly feasting on. Dog saliva if their is no knew people who come in.

      I looked it up in the original,it seems like the Beldam can travel to our world to.
      "head. That night, Coraline lay awake in her bed. The rain had stopped, and she was almost asleep when something went t-t-t-t-t-t. She sat up in bed. Something went kreeee . . . . . . aaaak Coraline got out of bed and looked down the hall, but saw nothing strange. She walked down the hall. From her parents’ bedroom came a low snoring-that was her father-and an occasional sleeping mutter-that was her mother. Coraline wondered if she’d dreamed it, whatever it was. Something moved. It was little more than a shadow, and it scuttled down the darkened hall fast, like a little patch of night. She hoped it wasn’t a spider. Spiders made Coraline intensely uncomfortable. The black shape went into the drawing room, and Coraline followed it a little nervously. The room was dark. The only light came from the hall, and Coraline, who was standing in the doorway, cast a huge and distorted shadow onto the drawing room carpet-she looked like a thin giant woman. Coraline was just wondering whether or not she ought to turn on the lights when she saw the black shape edge slowly out from beneath the sofa. It paused, and then dashed silently across the carpet toward the farthest corner of the room. There was no furniture in that corner of the room. Coraline turned on the light. There was nothing in the corner. Nothing but the old door that opened onto the brick wall."

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say there's a few people who would be wary of the Pink Palace, but what can they prove? If the police search the house, they'll only find a bricked up crawl space, so they'd probably report it as a runaway or abducted child case and look for her elsewhere. Timeline wise, the kids who are disappearing are vanishing decades apart. Even in a small town, people tend to have a short memory, so there's no one who's alive that even remembers that 4 kids have gone missing in that house. I think it would be easy enough to avoid a lot of suspicion, except from people like Mrs. Lovat who KNOW what happened to their sister.
