    Thanks for the great videos! 👍 Our Kohler 20RESA generator and original battery is 5 years old this month and even though it's been flawless, I just ordered a replacement battery. The generator came with a Deka 551MF battery. We live on the coast in the Northwest. Temps are moderate although for a few days it can get down in the 20's in the winter and 100 in the summer each year, but not too many extremes. Our generator runs a 20 minute test every week. Power failures are fairly infrequent. So we have less than 100 hours run time. Five years for any battery is great so I bought the same Deka 551MF battery from Lowe's. If it lasts another five years I'll be more than happy.

    You just saved me a call to Kohler. Ours needs replacing and I couldn't find it for the life of me. Now I know to take the outside cover completely off.

    Great stuff. Can you show me how to change the delay time before the generator kicks on? Have a Kohler 20kw. Been getting a lot of brief power surges where the generator turns on immediately. Wanted to increase the time before it turns on. Thanks!

    Really good tip about the corrosion-preventer. Did not know that existed, and easy to pickup at the parts store. Thanks ! !

    Do the glass matt batteries last any longer? Three yrs. is kind of short, but constantly on the charger will do that. Thanks for the video's.

      They all seem to last in the 3-4 year range. As long as the fluid in the cells don’t dry up

  • @williegillie5712
    @williegillie5712 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If the battery exploded before and this one was dead after 3 years it wouldn’t hurt to have the charging system checked. Most chargers maintain the battery in good health when not in use by measuring the voltage and charging it when low.

      @thehvachacker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kohlers are notorious for overheating the battery. Last one overheated trying to crank on a near 100 degree day with dry cells. 3-4 years is the average life on a standby genset

    • @theoldbigmoose
      @theoldbigmoose 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found that battery voltage a little high for standby service. But it is what Kohler designed in. I would have had it down around 13.5 to 13.7 volts for float service, if I were designing it.

      Kohler makes a wiring harness to reduce the charging voltage . Not sure what year they actually realized that the machines were programmed wrong but I’m sure the customer was the last to know . There is a video on TH-cam . My 2015 is charging at 13volts

    How hard is it to maintain the generator as an owner? Yearly or every 6months? Trying to get a feel for it so when I buy one. Thanks. By the way copper thiefs are out in JERSEY THIS TIME ITS ROOFTOP UNITS. 5 ARRESTED.

      It’s mostly spark plugs, air filter, oil change, making sure wires and no fasteners loosened up. Maintenance isn’t tough it’s when the break down that gets interesting

    Do you ever find the cells low on water? I used a maintainer that was supposed to cycle off, but, if I didnt check the levels, it would have cooked the battery dry.

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, often I find the cells low why on maintenance I check. Kohler is notorious for overheating the batteries with the trickle charger. The last battery in this generator explodes from the cells shorting. Due to the lack of fluid.

    Did you tork the battery nuts. I see you take pride in your work.

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just tighten till it feels tight. Yet no reason to over do it. I ran into too many cracked led battery terminals from someone over-tightening. Most stuff requires only inch pounds of torque

      They might ne dieing from lack of charge then the winter hits and kills them more

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The controller overcharges the battery often. Kohler had a recall kit and were giving out diodes that would help prevent the overcharge. Then my supplier stopped providing them and wouldn't order them. It was only the older kohl's with the green rdc2 controller.

    • @KP-pt3bi
      @KP-pt3bi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thehvachacker - Have you seen a controller with no display/no power? Is that more likely a dead controller board or a dead battery? I have a Kohler with a DC2 controller vs. the RDC2, and it has completely blanked on me.

    I'm just curious, why call an HVAC guy for generator service ? Maybe I'm missing something ?

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you call the hvac company if they are a premiere dealer of the brand generator you own? Who else works on generators besides HVAC techs? Also many of the generators I’m working on my company installed

      Sure it would make sense to call the dealer or installer. I guess I am used to electrical firms doing that. In the northwest there are even electricians that specialize in generator power. If you are capable keep up the good work.
