Remember that the Colt 1911 pistol only carried 7 rounds in WW1, so when GSGT Daly shot the machine gun commander and took 14 prisoners he did it with 6 bullets left in his gun

As a Marine, Dan Daly is a legend. As well as the 5th and 6th Marine Corps Regiments.
France awarded the Fourragere to the Marines and Sailors of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments in 1918 for their heroism and bravery in the battles of Belleau Wood, Soissons, and Château-Thierry during World War I. To this day, the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments are the only Marine Corps units authorized to wear the Fourragere. This ceremony marks a rare occurrence, in that an infantry unit that is originally from neither of those regiments received the coveted Fourragere.

    • @yashjoseph3544
      @yashjoseph3544 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@kevintemple245 The Fat Electrician isn't entirely correct about the MOH rules. No modern recipients have more than one medal because of laws passed for the Army in 1918, and for the Navy in 1919, which stipulated that "no more than one medal of honor . . . shall be issued to any one person," although subsequent awards were authorized by issuance of bars or other devices in lieu of the medal itself. The prohibition on double awards did not technically apply to the double recipients of WWI because they received Medals of Honor from different services, which meant the same medals were not duplicated and had independent statutory authority.
Later, in 1927, President Coolidge issued an executive order that forbade issuing more than one federal decoration for the same action, a policy that continues through the present time. The statutory bar on issuing multiple medals was finally repealed in the FY2014 defense bill, at the request of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, meaning that recipients can now be issued more than one medal rather than simply receiving a device for subsequent awards. However, no more than one medal may be issued for the same action.

These days typically if you get awarded the MOH, you typically are retired from Active Duty effectively ending any chance of repeating the chance to earn that medal again. Personally, since I am friends with a MOH recipient I could be biased and do think they should be retired and given more than the medal and about $1400 per month pension (that's just for getting that medal, doesn't include their potential retirement of their rank that they earned and possible disability pensions cause let's face it, normally if you earn the MOH it's usually given to the next of kin, so if you are alive, we owe them far more than we give them). It's similar to the Victoria Cross, I served in the Canadian Army 1st CSOR before joining the US Army 18F (Green Berets 19th Group).

It was just poor timing that Dan Daly was in line to get a 3rd Medal Of Honor that the U.S. was in the middle of reevaluating who deserves to get the medal or not. Right before America entered WW1, the U.S. reviewed all previous recipients and had revoked a little over 900 medals because they were not deemed worthy of the medal. A large part of this was because they wanted to establish the MoH as the highest medal that can be bestowed and revoke any that didn't meet up to this standard. When the medal was first given during the American Civil War it was given out like candy. 864 were given to a single regiment as an incentive to reenlist and stay to protect the capitol after the Confederate invaded Pennsylvania and left the capitol undermanned. 309 of the 864 volunteered to stay and the rest went home. They ended up only needing to stay for 4 days but because of an error the names of the volunteers was lost. The War Department still gave the medal to the entire 864 men even though a majority didn't volunteer and none of them fought during this time. I don't think they didn't give Dan Daly a 3rd medal because they were trying to be mean but more to just establish how hard it is to receive it during this crackdown on the MoH recipients.

His team was on the way out of the fire base to do a patrol. As they were leaving the wire they were attacked. He got shot through the meaty part of the shoulder. It wasn't a really bad wound. Later on in the evening he volunteered to go back to duty and got rotated into another patrol team. They got about 2 miles out and got attacked again and he was shot through his larynx. He got sent home. His commander put him in for 2 Purple Hearts but He only received 1, because the rule is only 1 Purple Heart in a day

You can technically be awarded the MoH more than once, but you only get the physical medal once. This came about due to many MoH recipients being awarded the MoH from the Army and the Marines for the same action. That is what that law was intended to correct. The comment that Dan Danly made “I only quit firing because they quit coming.”, reminds me of something similar that Polk County,Florida Sheriff Grady Judd responded to a reporter who asked Sheriff Grady Judd “why sho_t the suspect 68 times?”, and the Sheriff simply responded “because we ran out of b_llets.” Sheriff Grady Judd has warned any cri_inals that “if you sho_t at any of my Deputies, we will sho_t you grav_yar_ dea_.” You can watch his press conferences and he speaks honestly and in plain terms without any apol_gies.

Hi guys! The point of communications being much slower accounts for some interesting events in U.S. history, such as in the War of 1812 the battle of New Orleans being fought 2 weeks after the war was over, or in the US Civil War the last battle being fought in Texas over two weeks after the south surrendered.

For the record on the MOH it was rescinded in 2014.
No one alive has been awarded two Medals of Honor; there was a regulation from 1918/1919 until 2014 that prohibited multiple awards.
The NDAA of FY2014 rescinded that restriction, so it's now possible. The uniform regulation from the DoDM directs the wear as follows:
3.6. SUBSEQUENT AWARDS. A separate MOH is presented to an individual for each succeeding act that justifies award. A Service member awarded more than one MOH will always wear a separate MOH or separate MOH ribbon to correspond with the number of awards received.
The actual presentation would likely be similar to the initial ceremony.

When a recipient receives their medal, it comes with an understanding.
You went above and beyond the call of duty at great personal risk to yourself. And you will ALWAYS do so.
Winning more than one is literally pointless. It is expected that recipients of the MOH will CONTINUE to go above and beyond the call of duty. Because that's who they are. And when you have a high number of recipients doing so after being KIA, it rings very hollow to their families if you walk around with 4 of them.

I have a ton to say about this. While Nick does a great job at a very brief overview, he leaves out, forgets and glosses over so much. I’m not even a historian and could tear apart this summary, I get that’s not his goal, but as. US Marine. It is often time infuriating to see it so simplified and dumbed down, leaving out so many important factors. With tons of minor mistakes on top of it all. Th battle in China. He wasn’t alone, his unit from the shock actually found and brought back all the Marines, so 1200 effective’s. Overall, at the climax of the battle, they ym had to fight off 55’000 Chinese rebels and they didn’t just have a couple guns. Yes, while many of their guns were old to ancient, this is still the age of black powder and one the biggest and richest military’s were using smokeless powder. They had limited small cannon, with Kailey loaders and single shot rifles from 30 years old to barely a few years old. The end of the battle seen Dan Daly restoring hundreds of rebels by himself, as all other teams on his side were knocked out. Effectively or dead. He preserved. Killing 200 by him self, he didn’t beat 200, he killed 200, for sure, right here, right now, their corpses are on the ground, dead, no debate. Out of hundreds to even a thousand strong assault against his position. He mowed them down, and when to his rifle, bayonet, grenades. Like it was normal, everyday office work. He utterly wrecked them. And thought nothing of it. Yes, he was using his rifle and bayonet in close quarters, against hundreds strong in an assault. Until he could reload his colt 1895 “potato dogger” machine gun, the. Keep mowing them down. Until he stacked up 200 dead in front of his position. Just him, by himself, he is a god of war and legend.

Most people think Marines are these big, athletic men with unshakable courage.
It's actually every size man in the book. There's a few rotund types. But they go to "Porkchop Platoon" to get fit...
Most are pretty athletic. We get wrestling champs and football players. Chicago Juniors Racquetball champ. Martial artists. On and on. Any sport you can think of like Soccer was a big one as well. If you want a challenge? Join the Marines. You'll probably find out that High School and the Marines are on different levels. Then add in the entire USA. Not just a few school districts in MN. and you have a nice competition in the making. From there? We all push ourselves beyond what we thought was even possible. That's where the unshakable courage comes from. Nobody trains harder than the US military. Nobody in the Military trains harder than the Marines. There's Rangers and Seals. Rangers are Army Marines basically. Seals are Marines who do a whole other different job. Seals and Marines ride together. Have Dept. of the Navy on the paychecks etc. We simply do different tasks.

Hyper aggression is one of the most intimidating acts of war. It is taught extensively in th US military. NEVER resign yourself to defense if you have the ability to take offense. The same is true in any combat, even if you break it down to the level of a street fight. I'm 5'10" 135lbs 43 years old, and recently subdued (without hurting him), a 24 year old that had both height and weight on me. By being prepared and watching his body movements and the intention in his eyes, I was able to respond accordingly.

TFE got one thing wrong about that rule stating a soldier can only be awarded one Medal of Honor. Back in the day, the US had seperate Medals of Honor, one for the Army and one for the Navy. And what was happening was that some men were being awarded two Medals of Honor for the same action. The law that TFE mentions is makes it so that there’s only one Medal of Honor that encompasses all the branches. That being said, a USMC official did state that “no living Marine should be awarded three Medals of Honor.”

Please keep in mind that most people who earned the Medal of Honor only receive it posthumously. I think it's more in honor of them that it's only allowed once. It's a freak glitch in the matrix that Daly survived standing up and charging into no man's land, let alone solo mow the boxer lawn, or clear the Haitian Jungle without a scratch. Dude was freakishly charmed, and he used it well. But I believe, because I'm a good person who always hopes others have good intention, that the politicos were considering those who died to earn theirs when they made their decision. You have achieved the highest honor and survived. That is the apex, anything else is superfluous.

On one hand, I can agree that SGTMAJ Daly should have gotten that third MOH however, on the other hand it may have started to cheapen the purpose of the MOH. My opinion of the first MOH he got was that he shouldn't have. He was tasked with guarding those civilians back then and that's what he did. Ya shouldn't get praised for each time you do your job. The second time I agree he should have gotten it and he should have gotten it for his actions at Bella wood.

You can win more than one medal of honor. They just give you a little dangly thing that hangs under it, instead of a whole new medal. It looks silly in your dress uniform, to have a bunch of that same medal. It makes you look like a foreign dictator, if it's just covered with the most elaborate and ornate medals. This rule keeps the uniforms crisp.
