Cagayan is a province of the Philippines, in the region of Cagayan Valley. Tuguegarao City is the region’s seat of commerce and trade, regional/national government offices, and center for learning. Present day speakers say that the name was derived from the word “tagay,” a kind of plant that grows abundantly in the northern part of the province. Thus, “Catagayan” which means a place where the tagay grows abundantly was shortened to “Cagayan,” the present name of the province. It is called as “Smiling Land of Beauty” because of its natural, cultural and historical splendor. The line is from the province’s hymn (“Cagayan, O smiling land of beauty/ Cagayan, my heart clings unto thee”).
Cagayan provides a never-ending adventure with ecotourism in the forefront of its offering. Both foreign and local tourists continue to explore its caves, engage in game fishing expeditions, trek its mighty mountains and retreat to its centuries-old churches.It is a vast expanse of plains and valleys, bordered by mountains, running north to south both on its east and west ramparts. It is crisscrossed by rivers and creeks, the largest of which is the Cagayan River, which originates from the Province of Nueva Vizcaya that pass through the province from south to north. These rivers drain the plains and valleys of the province, and provide water for domestic and irrigation purposes, as well.
The gentle and moderate slopes of the province mostly contiguous to the level land enclosed the plains of the meandering rivers and creeks.
Cagayan has a prehistoric civilization with rich and diverse culture. According to archeologists, the earliest man in the Philippines probably lived in Cagayan thousands of years ago. Evidences to this effect are now convincing beyond scientific doubt to consider it as an incontestable fact. From available evidences, the Atta or Negrito - a short dark-skinned nomad - was the first man in Cagayan. They were later moved to the uplands by the Indo-Malays who eventually became the Ybanag, Ytawit, Yogad, Gaddang, Yraya and Malaweg - the natives of Cagayan - who actually came from one ethnicity. These are the people found by the Spaniards in the different villages along the rivers all over Cagayan. The Spaniards rightly judged that these various villagers came from single racial stock and decided to make the Ybanag Tongue the lingua franca, both civilly and ecclesiastically for the entire people of Cagayan which they called collectively as the Cagayanes which later was transliterated to become Cagayanos.
