So even if two places have similar architecture your brain picks up on the small differences and let's you know that something is different and feels off which puts you into a minor fight or flight mode just in case you need to act. A way to explain this is with extremes if an American spent one night in their house exploring then they would fine if they spent one night in a Japanese style house exploring they are more likely to feel that something is off or creepy. This can also happen with small differences such as with an American vs English style house might still give you the creeps. It's just the unfamiliarity that bothers us as humans.
