I built a home made saw mill in Key Largo & have bees cutting Cuban Mahogany slabs. This video gave me saw mill envy. What a great machine! Don't let people bother you too much about the lack of a blade guard. People who never create anything love to criticize those who do. I also wish I could smell the cedar saw dust :)
Gotta tell you Jerry, you did one awesome job in building this saw. It reminds me of the days growing up on my grandmothers farm. And there’s nothing like the smell of fresh cut wood. 👍
I like the way you added the weight to back of sawmill. I built one similar to it back about two years ago and have had great success with it..Good build
I really enjoy seeing the many things you do. I’m a self taught musician, with a love of bluegrass, southern style old time gospel, and country music. I started off playing guitar and then dabbled with 5 string banjo, bass, I can chord a mandolin, but I’ve found my true love to be pedal steel guitar and dobro. I’m loving your channel and have used your techniques for instrument repair, it’s satisfying being able to repair and set up instruments and I’m getting fantastic results from the things I’ve learned from you. Pretty much always been a diy guy, so seeing you making lumber from that beautiful cedar makes my mouth water! Thank you and keep doing what you do, you’ve inspired me to do things I never thought I could. Sincerely, Joe Boyd.
Great video, reminds me a lot of my Dad and Grandfather. My Grandfather worked in a saw mill, and was manager of a lumber company at one point. My Dad worked at the same lumber company. He would have built something like you did, he was always making things out of spare parts and old equipment.
Wow that's really cool. Looking into buying acreage land and the idea of making my own mill sounds awesome. That's a seriously huge log! Don't think I'd find trees that big here.
Just love that machine you've built there. Home made machine sawing home grown lumber, if you start making nails you'll have it sewn up good and proper.
Good job on the Sawmill,..watched all the parts 1,2,n 3,.and enjoyed the music also. Back home in Fiji Islands ,we had some real good timber ,all we needed was something like this....lol,.Keep rocking sir..regards from NSW ,Australia.
HI ! Oh, I would love to have those kind of trees on my property AND the abillity to cut them like you did there ! I only have my hause and a garden BUT I have a tree I soon will cut down AND cut up into boards ... just for the fun of it ! I HAVE to try this at least once in my life !
Great job on the build Jerry. You’re a Man of many talents no doubt. Prayers for Dick on that beautiful sounding banjo. I do hope he’s feeling better and plucking away. Take care.
Your saw cuts great Jerry - very impressive. Band-saws tend to stop dead (the blades) when stuff goes wrong, so guards.. meh... be grand. :-) Nice set-up.
If that blad snaps, and yes it will eventually, you really need to have some tough steel between you and that runaway blade. it sails through that cedar and would do much worse to you. Great project, just remember that the machine does not care if it kills you. The lumber is beautiful!
I LOVE the way you know how much to tilt up or down your saw blade with your 3' straight edge and measuring off of the bunk. I have not seen anything like that, GREAT great great. I realize this was make 1 1/2 years ago but you might be able to cut down a little bit on your water. You might put a PERMINANT ruler from the bunk up, say, no more the 10" or so, that way you will know where you are when you get close to the bottom cut.
I'm just starting my build, gathering parts, even though I'm in a city limit about 4mi across the river from St. Louis(Go ahead, rub it in,I'm on the wrong side of the river, lol)I'm only on 1-3/8ac ,but I still WANT one, lol. Been cutting/clearing a lot of Black Walnut for neighbors,so I'll have plenty to saw.I WISH we had cedars like that around here! I can smell it now! I used to live WAY back in the woods, dirt roads, etc in Tenn near KY Lake,I miss those times now,but HATED it when I was a kid.BTW,I LOVE the music!!!Thanks for sharing!!!
Hi Fella Nice music?. I play Guitar myself, but at 71 I just play in the house now, To old to Humff Amps about. I like your Saw mill, seems I will have to make one too' I have Okum I need to cut for my boat, So here goes. Tom Scotland.
In case you're wondering, TH-cam or somebody turned off my notifications for your channel, so I have to go back through what all I have missed. That said, as luck has it, I just came back inside from sawing a large oak on a small bought mill. Many times I have wished the guard was off of mine so I could see better. Looks like a perfect setup to me! Ever think about persimmon wood for a fret board? We have wild persimmon which is also known as white ebony...that saw mill would be perfect along with a solar kiln (low to no fire risk).
Yeah if you can find good Forest grown Cedar it's very fine wood. The stuff that grows out in the fields is so knotty. It's still good wood, but not nearly as nice as the stuff that grows in the forest.
Love the sawmill, great music! That cedar is very nice! We have only Juniper trees here in Western Colorado. I plan on building a bandsaw mill starting this year. Look for that on my channel.
I think the purpose of the blade guard is for when you're not expecting the saw to move, like let's say something like a nail stopped you from sawing, so you went to check it and a gust of wind blew it towards you. It might not even be on, but it might still hurt you. Maybe a safety brake of some kind is worth exploring too. Looks great btw.
+The Shade Tree Fix-it Man I will get to it. The blade came off one time and it doesn't even get near me so I'm not too concerned about it. I don't let anyone else around the saw when I'm working.
I would love to have that saw at the house. I have more than 1000 board feet of wild red cherry to saw up. Your saw works great! Makes me drivel with envy every time you use it.

Jerry that is awesome. You’re gonna have the best smelling barn or whatever you use those for. BTW “Torrified” is the new fad of baking wood in a kiln until it actually starts to turn brown like a nice pie crust I’ve never used it myself. It looks nice but now there are all kinds of wild claims about superior sound etc b/c it’s “pre-aged” like torrifying is going to recreate a 200 yr old maple back or spruce top. I say baloney to that.
@@RosaStringWorks Thanks for reply sir. And where are you from? Is it suitable for hardwood too? I would like to own this type of homemade bandsaw. How can you help me? I'm from Nepal.
Do they make a double sided blade to cut both ways. Also how about jacking up the log to save dropping the guides and lowering the blade? I know nuttings!
In theory the double-sided blade would save a lot of time. But the problem is it would pull off of the rollers. There are stops to keep it from going off when you have a smooth side they can roll against those stops and keep it from pushing off of the rollers. If you had a cutting side you'd have no way to put the stops on there. Regarding the propping up the log you could do that but it's much more time-consuming and not nearly as accurate as just dropping the blade.

Thanks Jerry! I can almost smell the Cedar from here! Very satisfying video.
I just found your saw mill videos this morning.....love it!
You should be quite proud of how well your machine worked. I am. Lots of red cedar around here too in Missouri.

Well, thanks for the invite! My wife’s family actually own a 280 acre ranch in Columbia. I may take you up on that one day😃
Pretty cool Jerry, nice to see you getting to use the saw you made and to get a good yield of square straight lumber. Good job my friend.

cut some pine and make a drying hut... you look like you have to woods for it... and a mill lol.it would make another good video :)
The only thing I don't seem to have is time. Thanks for looking.

That's awesome, like a horizontal band saw.
Love it, good Build man. Good Video!
I’ve been purchasing some of the tools that Jerry uses to repair guitars, but I’m drawing the line at this sawmill. 🤠
Beautiful wood. Love the colour

Great looking and fictional mill. Really like it!!! Great god sir!!!
Nice set up! A solar kiln would be a great companion
Some beautiful lumber there sir. 😎
OneVeryOrdinaryMan thank you very much. I'm really happy with the lumber quality and the saw in general. Thanks for watching.
great work. Thank you so much for sharing.
OMG I'm a General Contractor, my lead carpenter calls that Eastern Red Cedar, Crack for Carpenters, love that smell!!! lol
Gorgeous wood 👌
Fairly new subscriber here. Thanks for the videos!
Have you considered making a playlist for the saw mill!
Now that I have some office help I'm a update all my playlists.
Very under rated wood here in MO. Too many people here in Jeffco clear their land and burn this useful wood.
Yeah if you can find good Forest grown Cedar it's very fine wood. The stuff that grows out in the fields is so knotty. It's still good wood, but not nearly as nice as the stuff that grows in the forest.
Your wood storage must smell divine - I have a certain thing about wood and leather ;o0
Just beatiful.. Way to go
+Joe Romo thank you very much.
nice job.. what a money saver.
that's a cool way of getting lumber sawed the way you need it, life is good indeed! :)
Randy Schartiger thank you mr. Randy.

bobkins270 thank you very much my
fine little portable mill - I'd get that guard on it though
if you had a walkboard there would you be too high to push? keep you from stepping over tire...great build! i must have one

Well I've never operated a wood-mizer so I can't really honestly compare the two. It works pretty darn well.

+Constantin Garske thank you for taking a look. I believe it is 4 in.

Are you going to add a water drip for cooling the blade ?
I have one. But to be honest it works better without it

+cloudy days no sorry I built it as I went.
