All 4 Brits ran great. But special mention to Derek Redmond. Brilliant first leg set it all up for a gold medal. Redmond was such an unlucky runner. At times he showed such great potential.
A little known but still, I think, interesting fact; Roger Black's split time of 43.95 marked the first sub-44 second 4x400m split by a British athlete. The only Brits who have joined him since are John Regis, Mark Richardson & Martyn Rooney.
Black would have been a 44.0 or 44.1 runner out the blocks if it hadn't been for the periodic injuries. Still had a great career though. An Olympic silver behind Michael Johnson was still great achievement.
We don't have moments like this in athletics any more. For a start, you wouldn't have heard the crowd cheering over the pop music and announcer commentary.
What happened to the GB team at the 1988 Olympics? They were great here, they won the 91 World Championships, and were bronze in 92. But they finished 6th in '88. Weird.
Archie Woosung Not on occasions. During the 80's and 90's they always won gold in the European and commonwealth championships. They even won 2 world championship golds beating the US.
@@darrenshaw767 Absolutely. Todd Bennett was an absolute master on that third leg and would certainly have been in ahead of Brian Whittle if he had been fit.

Harald Schmid was the flyer. The best german runner ever. He is unforgotten.
I remember when Brian Whittle was asked after the race about losing his shoe he said "Well, I wasn't going to stop and tie it back on again!"
Brilliant! A run of considerable character!
I loved the celebration at the end by GB. 3/4 of the GB team is the same as the '91 World Champion team.

There's many more than this if you look into it, Richardson, Thomas, baulch etc...
Thanks so much for this post. Remember watching this live and seeing this replay for the 1st time had me screaming at my computer screen!!
A memorable race. Great days for athletics!
Whittle ran a personal best of 45.09 wearing just one shoe!
HE'S MY OLD SPRINT COACH, WHAT A RUN THAT WAS, IF HE'D HAD TWO SHOES HE'D HAVE HAD MORE TO GIVE ON THE HOME STRETCH.
"and he dances in triumph" - absolutely brilliant. So much respect for these boys, especially Brian Whittle, what a guy!!
Brian One Shoe Whittle ! You are an inspiration. Never give up.
Marvellous.
Gosh, now Lübke is a director working on the same floor as I do by Bayer. Incredible!
WOW, WE BOTH KNOW SOMEONE FROM THIS RACE! BRITAIN'S BRIAN WHITTLE WAS MY SPRINT COACH BACK IN THE DAY, UP IN SCOTLAND.
What a great British team, I remember all these 80's races back when I was a runner myself!
Yeah/ WE ALL DO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These games in 86 got me hooked on athletics,David Coleman mesmerising on the mic,Brian whittle"the fastest sock in Europe " they named him!!!!!
Just had Whittle come in to my school and talk about that

..and there seems to be a lull at the moment as far as British 400m running is concerned.
Great performance from One Shoe
This is what the Brit kit should always look like. I'm loathe to say Team GB.
runs the who leg in 1st place with a shoe missing. respect
Great win for our boyz there 😉
If Redmond and Black hadn't both got serious injuries they would have run low 44's.
Black run 44,0...
I honestly think Redmond was capable of running somewhere around 43.7 if he had been blessed with an injury-free career.

I thought they finished fifth but in 88 they were missing an injured Derick Redmond and an injured Roger Black
That was the same first three as in these championships 4 years earlier with the Brits and West Germans swapping positions.
Awesome
good ol' one shoe whittle there
There was something about athletics in the 1970s, 1980s, exiting patriotic races.
Love that.....
HALF BLACK, HALF WHITE TEAM, THIS IS GOOD STUFF.
Roger Black 44,0s....
And a wonderful wonderful win by Great Britain, but tragedy has befallen young Brian Whittle, as his shoe fits one of the ugly sisters.
Britain dominated event
not sure of that, but we seemed to have a team of four good runners on occasion whereas now...
Archie Woosung Not on occasions. During the 80's and 90's they always won gold in the European and commonwealth championships. They even won 2 world championship golds beating the US.
Archie Woosung we won it in 86,90,94,98 and 02. World championship gold in 91 and 97 plus commonwealth gold in 86, 94 and 02. That's fairly dominant.
why ran a relay final with 2 reserves.. that does not make any sense at all..
Because two athletes were injured.
Phil Brown and Todd Bennet both got injured in their individual races. That’s why you take reserve athletes lol
