Joaquín Turina - Sonata for guitar. Op. 61

Turina's Sonata for guitar is one of a handful of pieces written for Andrés Segovia in the 1920's and 30's. The work was premiered in 1932 in Rome by Segovia, and programmed by the maestro on a subsequent tour.
The sonata is in three movements, (fast-slow-fast) and is modelled on the classical sonata form. Basically, all of the major composers of the Classical and Romantic Eras wrote sonatas, and by the early Romantic, composers started to play with the form in hopes of doing something new and exciting. In my estimation, Turina played with the form by intermingling the harmonic languages of both Spain and France (where Turina studied composition for nearly a decade). The styles (impressionist, and quasi-flamenco) remain distinct from one another between the sections, not really melding, however this makes the form ever so clear. Despite being deemed worthy of publication, Segovia rejected the Sonata in his own way, as he never recorded the work and didn't really speak highly of the themes. It’s clear from interviews that he preferred the sonatas of Manuel Maria Ponce, which I think is perfectly understandable.
If you are very familiar with the Segovia publication, you may notice some small differences in this video as I took a couple of elements from the original score. There are a few notes changed, and some added scales.
I personally like the Sonata and apparently so do audiences. It fits very well on the instrument, gives us insight as to how someone at the time would compose Impressionistic music for the guitar, and the last movement in particular is excellent for practicing scales and rasgueados. I encourage my more advanced students to try it to keep their technique(s) sharp.

It’s an absolute gift that one of the best classical guitarists alive ALSO happens to be one of the best audio engineers AND videographers for the instrument.
Your output is an absolute treasure to the classical community and without a doubt you are helping new people discover the beauty of the instrument.
    Thank you so much!

Thank you! These are just fake nails that you can get at the drug store. I put them on with stickers I get from GuitarNailsKit website. They hold very well for me, but not everyone. I believe it depends on how well the fake nail fits onto your real one. For me, they fit very snugly and sound a lot better than my natural ones. I’ve trusted them to play the Aranjuez concerto which as you probably know has a lot of strumming and heavy rest stroke passages.

@@DrewHendersonGuitar Thank you so much for the info... I'm always having problems with my a-fingernail, but it's difficult to combine one artificial with the rest natural. Also I'm affraid the sticker ruin the basis of the natural nail more and more... Do you see any detrimental effects of having these nails? Do you keep the on or do you remove them daily? Thanks again.

One of the nice things about these videos - apart from the amazing music, obviously - is the footage: close-ups of hand positions /etc. On that note, I was wondering: it looks like you use fake nails of some kind? You read my mind! I just use the fake nails from the pharmacy, but they fit very well onto my existing nails which I think is necessary if you plan on using them. From there I use the stickers from the Guitar Nails Kit. They hold for a month at least for me.

Drew thank you for the EXCELLENT guitar playing and music.
Thank you also for the information on artificial nails. I am currently working up to making a recording of original compositions and I have dreadful nails. My nails are so bad that I actually have to hold my right hand in a rather unusual position to get a good tone. It's working, but if I could use the nail "prosthetics" , I might be able to hold my hand in a more usual manner.
