I love the level of subtext that Gene Hackman brings to the John Herod character.
In a script like this, he didn't need to be anything more than a dragon for Sharon Stone to slay. But he really makes it more.
There's palpable self loathing rotting away beneath his big, tough, mean exterior. Everything he does is out of an unconscious desire to destroy himself.
That's why he goes out of his way to deny the Kid is his son. Even though he likes the Kid, he doesn't want to be responsible for him. He doesn't want a reason to live beyond himself.
I especially love how, as big and mean and tough as he is, he sees the way Ellen looks at him, and is compelled to say some words in his defense.

This part is sad but its brilliantly written.
Harold doesn't want to fight his son, he did ask Kid to drop out. And it also shows that while Harold's harsh words and constant insult for the Kid, he still respect his skill as he told the Kid "your time will come".
In the gun fight, you can see that they both landed the shots, while the Kid wants to show off his skill and aims for the head, he slightly misses it and only hit Harold's neck, while Harold's shot aimed is precise to conclude the victory. If the Kid aimed for the body, Harold may not have survived though.

Herod gives Kid an epitaph "it was never proved that he was my son" - and yet, if you watch him walking away in the background, you may notice that he's dropping his hat, his gun and finally throwing away the bandage he's been stopping the bleeding with, all in obvious expression of utter distress. He might have been a cold, ruthless bastard, but man, he truly loved his son and never wanted it to end like this.

This definitely wasn’t love. Did you watch the whole movie? He always blamed his son in every way. He was cold and cruel to him and he even chanced the rules as he saw how good kid was. And he joined the contest after he realized that kid joined. So there’s nothing good at him. And even the fight between father and son wasn’t fair. Court told Ellen in a scene that before the clock shows the first time of the hour, there’s a klick. Herod probably knew this but Kid didn’t.

    • @Genesivare
      @Genesivare ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@miaeinhornfederzd "Did you watch the whole movie? He always blamed his son in every way"
I wanna ask you the same thing, because I watched this movie multiple times and I know that there was no such thing as Herod "blaming" his son for anything. You just made that up.
Yes, he was cold towards his son and repeatedly made him aware that he's disappointed in him - but that does not necessarily mean he did not care about Kid. Many people in the real world are also callous towards their children, not because they're evil nor deprived of love, but because they (erroneusly) think that they will motivate them that way. And besides all that, Kid still had much better living standards (Herod even get him his own gun store) and much happier life than other citizens. So it's not like he didn't owe his father nothing. He never had to go through the same hardships as others precisely because he was Herod's son.
"And he joined the contest after he realized that kid joined"
At this point, you conveniently leave out the fact that Kid joined the contest knowing that he will likely face his father and later challenged him to a duel with clear intent to kill him. I'm not even surprised. People like you just love to create a delusion of black-and-white morality (both in fiction and in real world) and will gladly leave out any redeeming traits of a person they label as "evil" and conveniently forget about any heinous acts of a person they label as "good".
Another thing which you conveniently left out is the fact that Herod was clearly unhappy that his son joined the tournament, repeatedly told him to withdraw (even shortly before their duel) and was openly frustrated when revealing to the Lady that someone (i.e. his own son) challenged him earlier than her. He never wanted to face his son. He wanted to avoid this. And when the duel still occured, despite his wishes, he basically had only two ways out - either shoot his son dead or let his son shoot HIM. Maybe it was cowardly of him that he put his own life in front of the one of his own son, but as terrible as it was, it was understandable.
So yes - in the end, Herod definitely loved Kid, in his own twisted way. The fact that he loved his own life and power a bit more does not change that.
"Herod probably knew this but Kid didn’t"
That is something you just made up (like that rubbish about Herod "blaming" his son) and which has absolutely no basis in the movie. At this point, it is clear to me you are growing increasignly desperate to cling to your sick black-and-white morality.

It's interesting people talking about Herod's "humanity" or "mercy" in this scene when talking about him giving Kid an out. I feel like people are missing the point that JOHN DOESN'T HAVE TO FIGHT EITHER. If he really cared about him, if he truly didn't want to fight/kill him, HE had every chance to step down if he wanted to. This scene does tell a lot about his character, it shows that his pride is worth more than anything to him, and further adds to what has already been shown about his own self delusion that he is anything more than just a killer.
