Nice work mate and so well put. I do envy your collection by the way. How you describe this is how I feel about "the blue hour", a time in my life, something in the air the gigs at the time etc. Life is golden is something I so wish I'd written and I want to leave it to my daughters when that time comes. Only music can make me feel this way. Thanks for sharing. Steve
Mark - you could rival John Peel for your encyclopaedic musical knowledge! It’s great to hear the passion you have for all these songs and for this game-changing band. Suede have consistently been one of the most important bands to me since I first heard The Drowners 30 years ago. I’ve had a different relationship with Dog Man Star over the years. When I first heard it, it was during the breakdown of my first relationship. Listening to ‘The 2 Of Us’ and ‘The Asphalt World’ then was agonising. Time has rendered the breakdown irrelevant and softened the emotional impact, but never lessened the power of those songs. I still think ‘The Wild Ones’ is one of the greatest singles (albeit criminally underperforming in the charts). I never thought anything could beat DMS, until I heard Night Thoughts. I wasn’t 20/21 years old any more, so never thought a record could still attach itself to my heart as a 42-year old. But it did. Perhaps a controversial view - I much prefer Night Thoughts to The Blue Hour, and I think I now actually prefer it to DMS, which had previously held the title of my favourite record of the last 25 years. The Roundhouse shows showcasing Night Thoughts blew my mind. It is unquestionably, once again for a Suede record, my favourite album of the last 25 years. However I can’t WAIT to hear Autofiction - if it’s anything like its first track promises, it may well displace Night Thoughts. Here’s hoping. Keep up the great work Mark! We are the insatiable ones!
Night Thoughts was a good one. When Bloodsports came out I was 50/50 (half of it sounded promising, half sounded tired and derivative), but the two albums since them have sounded more confident and fresh. I feel they are back to being a pretty solid band.
Have to say, BELTING review! I used to think Still Life wouldn't be beaten. Know a few fans who think it's overblown. But, to me it's a masterpiece. So when heard Night Thoughts, didn't expect the last track to hit me like that. I recall mates in the 90s, all Oasis/Blur fans. You try and explain give Suede a go, Pulp a go. Pointless. 'Feathers' to me, is everything Suede are. Classy, cool, and hugely epic. Belter. Played it to a girlfriend at the time, she said who are Suede? She loved it, even though an r n b fan. Nah, me neither. Doomed to fail. Night Thoughts, to me, is next to Dog Man Star. Both worlds you can inhabit. No matter your age. Didn't think they'd still be around in my late 40s. Dived back into REM, (now there's a band with a dwindling quality of last few records, Up excepted). post Suede 2003 break-up. Glad Suede are back...
Night Thoughts is my favourite Album in this phase of Suede release. It's so cinematic and demands that you must listen to the album from start to finish. I missed out on the DMS RAH show, I had the ticket, but unfortunately circumstances dictated that I could not make it, gutted does not even cover my feelings. I think my Suede live count is north of 35ish
