  • Journey to Pasadena, California to join curator Jennifer Trotoux for a tour of the iconic Gamble House: a national landmark in the U.S. and classic example of American Arts & Crafts architecture. Built in 1908 by architects Greene and Greene as a winter escape for David and Mary Gamble, who lived in Cincinnati the rest of the year, this well-preserved masterpiece features many distinctive design elements and handcrafted details, including: beautiful joinery throughout the home; motifs such as the family crest and unique inlays that showcase a variety of special materials; an exterior that shows the Greene and Greene's interest in implementing Japan's timber architecture throughout Southern California; a living room with an inglenook that places emphasis on the hearth, a library table, and a Redwood frieze that incorporates the theme of Japanese art and nature into the home; a dining room with a magnificent fixture that features an abstract pattern of clouds and two unique switch to adjust lighting (which was forward-thinking at that time) and iridescent art glass that allows light to stream into the room and give life to the wooden surfaces; an early 20th century kitchen with a focus on built-ins, maple hardwood cabinetry, and sugar pine countertops; and second level that is comprised of sleeping porches to step out on for some fresh air and stunning views of the grounds, as well as four bedrooms with a primary suite that includes furniture made of black walnut and big casement windows that allow for ample light.
Oh, and fun fact? The garage on site was used as Doc Brown's workshop in the movie 'Back to the Future.' For more information about visiting the Gamble House, head to thegamblehouse.org.
