That's wonderful footage! Wouldn't those folks be shocked, dismayed & possibly disappointed in the growth & changes in their beloved Smokies! Thank you for the walk down memory lane.

I believe they would be absoloutly disappointed. Watching this makes me almost… ever these times, even though this was a rough time for early America.

I met Mike Maples just before he passed away. I have a couple of his books. He gave me a lot of good information about my family history. My Grandmother and family lived in the Sugarlands and i have relatives buried there in and around Gatlinburg.

Kevin and the late Mr. Maples, in my opinion are pillars of the community here. I wish I would have had the chance to correspond with Mike. What he captured on camera is really special. Thanks so much for watching!

I remember a lot of this. I have some vintage photos of Gatlinburg that I have framed. One of my close friends there is a Maples. In a way I wish it still was the way it was back then ❤

I wish so too. My parents honeymooned in Gatlinburg. Our yearly family vacations were spent there. I still take an annual vacation there. It's changed so much, but the Smoky Mountains remain God's country.

Love this. I started going to the Smokies when I was so little. A lot of the vintage photos look very familiar to me. Not sure if you knew it or not, but Wiley Oakley was Becca Jordan's (Michael Jordan's wife) great grandfather. And Mike Maples is a true legend. He was so full of historical information. He was known as the Mountain Jedi. There is a waterfall off trail named after him. Watch all his videos. You will learn so much! We all miss him. He is buried in a cemetery near Greenbrier.

SO amazing to see this! Years ago I read "Christie" by Catherine Marshall, about a young gal who spent a year teaching the school children of the Smokies (before it was dedicated as a national park) and the culture of those people was so poignant and haunting (and delightful, at times). It is a gift to see what the area may have looked like in the time of that story. And WOW, can you IMAGINE how pristine that are was!?

I absolutely love history and especially history from around the mountains. My wife and I were born and raised in the mountains of NC. We are raising our two boys in the county we grew up in. These mountains are our home and always will be I reckon. God bless y'all 💙🙏

Thank you for putting up this video. Given the original person the credit is great, but you deserve credit to for thinking of during the video on your channel so people know how the smokey used to be. 👏👏👏👏👏👏

I loved it the way it was before it became what it is today. People say " progress " and I say, enough is enough. I feel the same way about Pigeon Forge. All for money and greed. So many of Gods wildlife have lost so much habitat on this planet. It's a shame.
