I just had to let you know I am 60 & thanks to you I have just read my first classic ‘Persuasion’ 🎉. My book shelves are now full of your recommendations courtesy of charity & used book sites currently. Many, many thanks 🙏🏻. I’ve got much to catch up on 😮
Yes would definitely support a separate channel on modern literary fiction, you are by far the best at explaining what classic literature is and does and why we should read it so would appreciate the same instruction on modern literature. Thanks again Tristan ,have only just discovered you,and cannot get enough,so keep on doing what you do.
A second channel to cover modern literature? Most definitely - count me in already! As many other commenters have already said, you have an intelligent and enthusiastic approach to your discussion of the classics that definitely transmits well to the viewer.
Your channel is one of the best. Watching your videos I really improve my understanding English and literature, it help me a lot. I am glad I've found this channel. With love from Ukraine. Thank you!
You have changed my life by introducing me to the Classics. I now have a long list of books to read, including your top 5. I do not think I will have time or inclination to read modern books but of course I would follow you for the fun you bring to reading. Please do not burn yourself out though.
The way you talk about books is why your channel is one of the best. You give every book such a great, well-rounded explanation without ruining the plot or over-explaining anything.
Could I suggest a video on science fiction classics such as H.G. Wells War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, Jules Verne’s 20,000 leagues under the sea, Dune by Frank Herbert. Man in a high castle by Philip Dick, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and of course 1984 by George Orwell. These are speculative works of literature which have stood the test of time, but somehow the sci-fi genre gets ignored.
I have started Alone in Berlin after you have recommended it at least 3 times. It is what I would call an uneasy read given the subject. I am reading it because it is a classic, it is based on a true story and because it keeps coming up in your videos. I am finding it intriguing and a page turner.
I would love to see your takes on more contemporary writing! And Testament of Youth made such an impact on me, and continues to even after all these years. What a wonderful book.
I would definitely listen to you talk about modern books, whether on the same channel or a different channel. I am sure many people would. You have an enthusiastic and intelligent insight to literature that is unique here on booktube..
Alone in Berlin. Yes, this is a wonderful book. I didn’t finish mine until January or it would have made my top 3 of last year. Everything about this book is possessing. It carries a richness that just stays with you. Also, A Testament to Youth is on my bookshelf for this summer.
Ohhhhhhh The Painted Veil is one of my all time favorite books. I reread it in 2023. So so good. I would love to see videos of modern classics, modern lit in general. I would definitely follow your videos on another channel.
Good Morning Tristan. A review of modern novels would be appreciated. Side comment...a went out after watching this to a second hand bookstore and picked up room with a view and moon stone. Thanks for pushing my boundaries.
I read the classics and contemporary, so yes, I would watch / subscribe to both! I love listening to your analyses and you've introduced me to so many new and interesting books I would not have otherwise picked up. Thank you for all the effort you put into your videos!
Hello, Tristan! While your classics channel would always be my favourite, I would definitely support a channel on more modern books - I can't read too much about books!
I only just finished reading 'Testament of Youth'. I fully agree with your comments on this book. My wife is now reading it and enjoying it very much. Personally, I regard this book as one of the most moving books that I have ever read.
You are the first person to ever speak about Testament of Youth on TH-cam to my knowledge. I read it nearly 50 years ago and yet it remains with me still: such a moving book.
Hello Tristan. I hope you are doing well. I am in middle age (50+) and classics are what I am reading (along with history books like US Civil War, WWII etc) at this stage in life. Outside of that, there may be other topics that are discussed that I may find interesting at that moment. So, I can't say that I would support your second channel as consistently as I do this channel. I can say that I would at least give it a chance for a while; and even if I did not support with the same interest as this channel; I would "keep my eye on it" and to see if there was a discussion on a topic I find interesting. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your next video.
Your channel is wonderful and I'd certainly watch a second channel. Reading is an act of humanity, booktubers share their lives with us (more or less), and now we've lost one who shared quite a bit of life and literature and is gone way too early. 😢#welovejenny
First, I love your channel and hearing you talking about your favorite classics, especially since you're one of the booktubers that inspires me to pick up certain books. Hearing you talk about Tender is the Night made me think about how there are books, especially classics, where people talk about how brilliant they are, and I don't feel as passionately about those books. I'm asking myself why do I not feel the same way or see what they see? Tender is the Night and Catcher in Rye are couple of books I feel that way about. I do wonder if in some cases I pick it up just to check it off as something I have read. A couple years ago, I decided I wanted to read Fitzgerald's works, but I eventually have lost interest in him. I think I was just trying to go through his work like a list. This year I want to try to put less pressure on myself to go through books like a list, but I just want to make sure I don't forget and neglect authors either. I would subscribe to a second channel where you talk about modern reading you do.
Of course I would watch it. Time spent with Tristan is time well spent. Your enthusiasm has lead me to read “The Painted Veil”, “Far from the Madding Crowd”, and just finished “Great Expectations”….enjoyed them all. Thanks!
Hi Tristan, so nice to see a german novel high up your 2023 list :-) I have to confess, despite being German, I have only recently started to discover Hans Fallada. I started with "Little man what now?", and reviewed it shortly in my December wrap up. Having heard you talking about 'Alone in Berlin' I'll definitely make this the next in line on my Fallada TBR! Regarding your question at the end of the video, YES, I'd love to hear you talking about contemporary literature as well.
Based on your description of "Alone in Berlin", I have a feeling you'd enjoy eastern European (specifically Latvian) literature - it tends to be a bit dreary, and the oppressive feeling of *someone always watching* is incredibly common. Those are reasons why I don't tend to go for my country's literature, but sounds like for those exact reasons you would enjoy it. One of the most popular books about ww2 we have is "The Taste of Lead" ("Svina garša") by Māris Bērziņš. It came out only 8 years ago, but it's already considered a classic by many. I studied it in highschool. If that's your sort of thing, I would highly recommend it. :)
Loved your description of Alone in Berlin. Having just read The Book Thief, I think Faders book will take me deeper into that atmosphere of paranoia of that era which I want to understand.❤
I enjoy your channel immensely. My one complaint of the many channels that talk about literature is that they discuss the same titles far too often, over and over. Your suggestion for branching out to include a wider selection of titles is good, just what I"ve been hoping for. Some titles which everyone should be aware of are One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, The Tin Drum by Günter Grass, The Good Soldier Svejk and his Fortunes in the World War by Jaroslav Hasek, The Assault by Harry Mulisch, A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, The Devil in the Flesh by Raymond Radiguet, and many many more. I'm looking forward to this new venture / adventure!
Yes, I'd love to hear your take on contemporary books. I really enjoy your presentations and I think I'd like listen to you talk on any subject that you were interested in. Your enthusiasm really makes these videos!
yeah i would definitely watch you talk about other books, i don't personally have any specific passion for classics to begin with & am just here because i appreciate your perspective
Hi Tristan, I would like to let you know I absolutely love your channel as someone who read Tolkien in my youth but never really grasped some of the Classic Literature taught at Grammar School Shakespeare in particular totally put me off from reading other classic literature but I have to say your channel has made me think differently and given me a thirst to start again, to give some of your recommendations a try so thank you very much for your insight and explanation video’s I wish you had been my English teacher I really think my reading and understanding of the English language (written as well as reading , grammar ect) would of greatly improved to the point it would of had a positive impact in my life in so many ways. You are a born teacher and I would whole heartedly support a channel on modern literature.
Thank you so much for another wonderful and insightful commentary. I have read many of the works that you mention and many that I have not I rush out to buy.
Yes, please! I would love to hear your comments and suggestions on modern books. Thank you for all the work you put in to this channel. It is appreciated.
I would love it! I read "Lincoln in the Bardo" this summer (it is several years old now) and found myself wanting to share and discuss it with others. I mostly read nonfiction, so I am judicious about time I give to fiction, and it is terrific to get reviews from a true bibliophile. (I just ordered "Alone in Berlin"; your review called to mind "The Sunflower" by Wiesenthal, another remarkable book.) Thank you, Tristan!!
Please please please!!!! Do a channel on any books you read!!! I love your YT channel! And I’m a proud Patreon member!! I don’t really have fb so I’d personally be thrilled for any channel you have! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🤞🏻📚❤
I enjoy your channel about the Classics so much! You give me so much insight to each and every one, thank you Tristan. A channel on Modern Novels would be fantastic also, so yes I would subcribe to that too!
Yes! I would enjoy a second channel with more modern novels and authors!! I am reading Testament of Youth now! But it can be a bit hard at some points.... she is still in England and no one has died yet. Also, i am positive i read Alone in Berlin yrears ago... it sounds so familiar, even the couples's name made my ears perk up! I dont remember how it turms out, so i will have to find it and reread!
Excellent review/commentary on your reading from last year. The way you talk about them is really enticing :) I am definitely taking notes on some of those books to add them to my list . I encourage you to set up another channel for your non-Classics reading. That would be a lot of fun!
Thanks. In case you haven't seen the post I made a fee hours ago, I've just created the new channel. It's called Tristan Talks Books. Hope to see you over there.
Yes please. Would another book channel I've just retired and I'm loving watching you. Just read Our Mutual Friend on your recommendation was fantastic just afraid my first Dickens book was his best and the others won't be as good. Thank you
I’m very interested to hear about the other books you read, because you make reading so lively. To be honest, I’m sure you could do a review of the phone book and manage to make it fascinating! 🤨 😊
I am Spanish and a l have just come across your Chanel and it is just fabulous ! I have ordered two books from this lista of five and I will read A room with a view which is in one of my bookshelves... Thank you for your Hard work and wonderful videos! Regards from Madrid, Gabriela
I read _Tender Is The Night_ years ago. I was in my early twenties. I understood and recall only bits and pieces about it. It seemed to me then that somehow Dick had managed to make the wrong choices over and over. And you are very correct! The narrative moves forward in slow-moving intermittent waves.
I never read anything by F.Scott.Fitzgerald ( only saw the movie the great Gatsby)...and from all these 5 books his is the one that appeals to me the most...so Tender is the Night will be in my TBR list of 2024
The painted veil, i didn’t know it was a book. I’ve only seen the movie, which i really enjoyed. It stars Edward Norton and Naomi watts. I wanted to watch Testament of Youth but I don’t think the movie ever came to America. I can’t think of the actress but Kit Harington played Roland.
I would love to hear you talking about new books, as I always find your views fascinating, and for someone like me - I'm elderly and know virtually all the older books you talk about - it would be an introduction to what new books I should be looking for. May I please thank you so much for this particular video because I knew all the books you discussed so well, with the exception of "Alone in Berlin". First, I think Somerset Maugham is far too neglected these days and I truly don't know why. He wrote incredibly insightful and often heart breaking novels, but also the most wonderful, often comic, short stories - some of the best I've ever read. Re "Tender is the Night", I first read this in my teens, and was left deeply affected by the characters' fate - again, F. Scott Fitzgerald could make you care so much in a novel or write a funny short story. And "Testament of Youth" - I think it's clearest picture we're ever likely to get of what the First World War did to a generation of young women, as they lost the men who were fighting. It is absolutely unflinching, but so full of heart. Vera Britain was changed by that war for ever - if you read her following books, "Testament of Experience" and "Testament of Friendship" she is an almost unrecognisably harder and more critical person. Regarding E.M. Forster, he is simply wonderful writer, especially about the difficulties of love across social divides, and the difference between what is expected of women both young and old. I will certainly buy "Alone in Berlin" - up to now I have relied on Christopher Isherwood for a picture of the life lived in Berlin in the period leading up to the rise of Nazism. Thank you so much, again, for a fascinating video which I really loved.
Love your videos. Just discovered you today. I love the classic reads and was overjoyed to discover a few new ones. Your number 1 pick of Alone in Berlin sounds absolutely amazing and I’ve put it on my TBR list. I would love to see a modern books channel 👍👍👍
Currently reading The Beautiful and the Damned, and I'm now ready to read all things F Scott Fitzgerald. I've read many of Foster's novels, but it's been a while. I need to re-read A Room with a View. I loved that. Allof these sound wonderful. My TBR is growing, and I've enjoyed everything you've recommended so far. Thanks!
The painted veil was done into a good movie. I cannot remember the actors but remember how well it was done. And the scenery’s beautiful. But as always I’m sure the book is better
So I have started a 2nd channel called Tristan Talks Books. I'd love to see you over there.❤
Yes, please! A channel where you talk about other books would be a dream!
Yes! I would listen to him talk about anything! haha
I have made the 2nd channel. It is called Tristan Talks Books. Hope that you enjoy it.
I just had to let you know I am 60 & thanks to you I have just read my first classic ‘Persuasion’ 🎉. My book shelves are now full of your recommendations courtesy of charity & used book sites currently. Many, many thanks 🙏🏻. I’ve got much to catch up on 😮
Wonderful!
I would follow you with modern literature too. I love classic literature but I would follow you in both channels!
Yes...I would support your new channel on modern books. Thanks for all you do, Tristan!
I think discussion of modern/contemporary literature would be fun. I read both and enjoy your perspective on the classics. Thanks!
Your channel is one of the best. Watching your videos I really improve my understanding English and literature, it help me a lot. I am glad I've found this channel. With love from Ukraine. Thank you!
Thank you! 😃
Yes to the 2nd TH-cam channel! I can listen to you talk about books all day!
Yay! Thank you! It's called Tristan Talks Books 📚
You have changed my life by introducing me to the Classics. I now have a long list of books to read, including your top 5. I do not think I will have time or inclination to read modern books but of course I would follow you for the fun you bring to reading. Please do not burn yourself out though.

Wow, thank you!
Great first choice Tristan. I love SM, From The Razor's Edge to Of Human Bondage.
That has to be the best description of 'Testament of Youth' I've heard.
Yes, I would definitely tune into another channel you host. Whatever you decide, I'll keep up with this channel. Thanks Tristan.
Your book reviews are absolutely brilliant 😊.
Glad you like them!
Thank you! And yes, I would subscribe and watch a separate channel covering your modern reads. 🙂
Awesome! Thank you!
Another bookish channel? Count me IN!
I finished The Painted Veil last week and it’s one of my favorite reads this year so far.
Hope you enjoy it! It's called Tristan Talks Books
I have started Alone in Berlin after you have recommended it at least 3 times. It is what I would call an uneasy read given the subject. I am reading it because it is a classic, it is based on a true story and because it keeps coming up in your videos. I am finding it intriguing and a page turner.
"An uneasy read" is an excellent way to describe it. I hope that you enjoy it.
Yes, to the separate channel for new books!
Your show is far above the many book discussion programs and better than many of the literature classes. Thank you very much.
Adding my voice to the chorus! Please start a channel for reviewing modern books!
yes, another channel! I love your videos!
Alone in Berlin. Yes, this is a wonderful book. I didn’t finish mine until January or it would have made my top 3 of last year. Everything about this book is possessing. It carries a richness that just stays with you.

The passion with which you talk about books is enchanting - added many of these to my backlog 👏
First, I love your channel and hearing you talking about your favorite classics, especially since you're one of the booktubers that inspires me to pick up certain books. Great 2023 classics selections. It would be excellent to have a channel on modern literature.

I’ll watch whatever you put out, Tristan. I think a channel on modern reads would be great.
You have such enthusiasm for the books you share. If you were to share more modern reads, I would follow that channel as well.

If that's your sort of thing, I would highly recommend it. :)
I love your enthusiasm for each of these works. I needed that today. :)
Kudos to whomever devised that intriguing home page. Very inviting! A Fandango of books!
Yes, yes, yes, modern novels commented on by you would be wonderful. Good idea.
I would surely watch another of your channels.
Yes, I would appreciate a channel where you review other, newer books. Thanks for all you do and I really love this channel.
Yes Tristan! I would love to hear your thoughts on anything you read! I would support you! Please, just dont burn yourself out.
Yes, I'd love to hear your take on contemporary books. I really enjoy your presentations and I think I'd like listen to you talk on any subject that you were interested in. Your enthusiasm really makes these videos!
Yes. I would watch your reviews of modern novels!
yeah i would definitely watch you talk about other books, i don't personally have any specific passion for classics to begin with & am just here because i appreciate your perspective
i read alone in berlin as another video recommendation and i loved it. just ordered the painted veil
Alone in Berlin is on my shortlist!
I just got Alone in Berlin based on your recommendation and look forward to it!
Thank you so much for another wonderful and insightful commentary. I have read many of the works that you mention and many that I have not I rush out to buy.
Just ordered Alone in Berlin... thanks so much, Tristan.
Yes, please! I would love to hear your comments and suggestions on modern books. Thank you for all the work you put in to this channel. It is appreciated.
I enjoy contemporary writing, so I am certainly interested in a channel about it from you.
I would 100% watch you in another channel doing modern books!
Yes, please!
Yes, Yes, Yes and thank you !!
Please please please!!!! Do a channel on any books you read!!! I love your YT channel! And I’m a proud Patreon member!! I don’t really have fb so I’d personally be thrilled for any channel you have! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🤞🏻📚❤

Yes to you creating a channel about your current modern reads too Tristan ❤ I’d subscribe for sure
Excellent review/commentary on your reading from last year.
The way you talk about them is really enticing :) I am definitely taking notes on some of those books to add them to my list .
I encourage you to set up another channel for your non-Classics reading. That would be a lot of fun!
Thank you for another great video. Alone in Berlin is up next on my reading list. Love your channel and your passion for us book tubers.
Thank you for your insightful comments and reflections! I loved the Fallada and found it hugely powerful in an understated way.
Thank you so much for responding to our feedback! I would absolutely love that second channel! =)
Thanks. In case you haven't seen the post I made a fee hours ago, I've just created the new channel. It's called Tristan Talks Books. Hope to see you over there.
@@tristanandtheclassics6538 Yay, very excited! =)
Thanks for sharing these books which are all great recommendations
Yes please. Would another book channel I've just retired and I'm loving watching you. Just read Our Mutual Friend on your recommendation was fantastic just afraid my first Dickens book was his best and the others won't be as good.
Thank you
Thank you for getting me back into the classics.
I’m very interested to hear about the other books you read, because you make reading so lively. To be honest, I’m sure you could do a review of the phone book and manage to make it fascinating! 🤨 😊
Yes,to the new channel
Yes! Would also love your commentary on modern books and will follow you there as well!
You have a great idea, having another chanel for modern books. I’d love to hear your take on new books…the classics of the future?
I am Spanish and a l have just come across your Chanel and it is just fabulous ! I have ordered two books from this lista of five and I will read A room with a view which is in one of my bookshelves... Thank you for your Hard work and wonderful videos! Regards from Madrid, Gabriela

THE PAINTED VEIL is a very good and deep book.
Yes I very much enjoyed it and other works by Somerset Maugham
@joannemoore3976 Did you read" In the Villa?"
Thanks!
Yes! I will definitely follow you on an additional channel.
Yes please I would support your new channel!
So pleased to have found your channel..... Thank you so much
The painted veil was done into a good movie. I cannot remember the actors but remember how well it was done. And the scenery’s beautiful. But as always I’m sure the book is better
