  • Although Chopin asked for his unpublished pieces to be destroyed after his death, they were rescued from this fate by his friends and family. Julian Fontana, Chopin’s long-time confidant, published this Nocturne in 1855, along with two other early works: a funeral march in C minor and three écossaises. Though published posthumously as Op. 72 and replete with the drama of his mature works, this was in fact the composer’s first nocturne, written in 1826 or 1827. At the time of writing, Chopin would have been about 16 years of age and might well have still been studying at the Warsaw Lyceum or may have just started at the Warsaw Conservatory. In it we find both the indulgence and restraint that his mature compositions demonstrate, but also a simplicity and grace that make it difficult to interpret yet almost spiritual when performed at its best.

The sound is very beautiful, as if it comes from the depths of the piano. Perhaps because you brought the camera closer.

Yes, it's where I try to explain what I'm thinking about as I approach the piano after a gap of some 30 years...

    James,
Your phone's built-in microphone does not do your performances justice!
Have you considered eventually investing in some microphones and an audio interface? Having a home setup nowadays does not take much money and there are plenty of budget-friendly options to get yourself going!
    Your fellow pianist,
    Lawrence

Thank you, but I do use a SHURE attached mic. I'd love to get into a recording studio with great mics and edits like the pros, but this is it for now...
