I was a Kawasaki dealer mechanic back when these came out. They were CAD designed from the ground up for light weight. They were the perfect evolution. Lighter, meant better performance and handling. The earlier big Z felt like the engine was made of lead.
Kawasaki reduced the capacity of the MK2 from 1015 cm3 to 998 cm3 in order to race against the Honda 900 Bol d'or and Suzuki Gs1000r here in France, and gave Eddy Lawson his reputation in the USA..
After my dark blue Z1000 mk2 I had this bike on 1981- 1982, wich made "le bol d'argent", a 6 hours race just before les 24h du mans on bugatti circuit. My 1000J red and blue, was equiped wich a le mans Devil exhaust system for endurance races, special carburation and extra large racing tyres Dunlop KR 91. It produced more than 110 hp for a top speed of more than 220 kmh..
The Z1000J is probably a better performing and better handling bike than the original. That’s just natural evolution. But my favourite, most beautiful bikes mainly come from the golden decade of the 70s. Or is it just my tired old, rose coloured glasses?
The 1970s is certainly the golden age of the motorcycle, I really think so, too!! For example, Kawasaki Z1, H2 Yamaha XS650, RD series and DT series and all that. those motorcycles sparkle in my heart!
King07T I first had my license in the 70s. I had a RD350 but one of the friends I used to ride with had a XS2 650. I loved the look and sound of the RD but also the big Yamaha. I will always remember those days as a teenager when I first discovered the freedom of taking off on my motorbike. Like you say, truly the golden age.
That's exactly how I feel also, I remember clearly the memory when I am teenager, too. and I think that it is very important to continue having teenage memory. Forever young!
