How to remove a watch link using at home tools.

  • Hello fellow homo sapiens! I needed to resize the watches I featured in my last haul and I asked my dad if we could take it to a watch shop. Instead, he said he knew how to fix it with just at home products and I thought, "why not?" And it worked. He showed me how the process works and I wanted to share with you all :D
    If you have any questions or concerns just leave them in the comments please :)
    I hope this helped and I really hope it wasn't all that complicated because I really tried to explain it as simple as I possibly can!

    I'm a 50 yo male that has been pretty handy with tools most of my life. I was about to break down and buy a specialty tool to adjust this one bracelet that was beating me. I watched your video and used your method and got it. I got schooled by a teenage girl today. Hats off young lady, thanks for putting this out.

    Oh my gosh girl you have saved the day! I bought a beautiful opal face watch a month ago and have not been able to wear it because it fell off of my wrist. I tried everything in the world to get the pins out and could not do it. Finally I decided to look on TH-cam. I saw several videos of men showing how to do it but I skipped over them and went straight to yours. Lol I'm so thankful I did! Your instructions were super easy and I did it perfectly! I now have a beautiful watch that I wear all the time thanks to you.

    Great technique. Your method worked best for me, especially since I had purchased the same "jewelers tool kit" at the 99¢ store. I also appreciate how you denoted the construction of the pin (round on one side, flat on the other), and the pitfalls to avoid to prevent damage to the watch. I also appreciate your candidness and honesty in admitting you had damaged a watch on a previous occasion and, as you know, making mistakes is a part of the learning process. It was very easy to understand, Justine, and now I can wear my watch. Thank you and I wish you continued success on TH-cam. (Wow, I really should change my profile pic.)

    WOW! Thank you!! I have just been through 4 other videos for adjusting watch band. Two were specific for my Seiko. I wish I had seen yours first! I would have been wearing my watch for a week. I finally gave up and took what I'd learned and then had to use my logical sense and I was able to remove the links. But I wasn't 100% sure until seeing your video. WOW, again! You were so clear about the ends of the pins and how to reconnect. From start to finish yours was tops!! I only used a push pin, which I could easily grip and a coarse needle with a little round ball tip on one end. The push pin worked great!! Thanks again!!!

    Just a few things I wanted to note here. There are different types of pins used in watch bracelets. Some bracelets use "Split Pins" (what is shown in your video) other watches use actual screws that must be removed like any other screw would. The only way to know this is just experience and a keen eye. Watches with actual screw link bracelets tend to be more expensive watches and the screw head will be larger than a split pin setup. One other thing to note, you can save yourself lots of time if you remove links further up the bracelet (closer to the movement) assuming that you have a constant thickness bracelet, if you remove links further towards the case, you won't have to deal with having to re-install the ends links as you won't be removing the end link from the bracelet closure.

    You can also just use a paper clip and a pair of pliers. Unfold the paper clip and hold it with the pliers and use it to push the pin through. Probably less risk of damaging things that way.

    The best piece of advice you gave is your advice never to attempt this with an expensive watch. Usually the store that sold it will offer free sizing (don't be a moron, present your receipt). If they do not, and the watch cost more than 30 bucks you should absolutely not attempt this yourself.
    There are about 8 different types of watch pins or other ways to hold watch links together, if you don't know the difference and how to handle the different types, you could be setting yourself up for a broken watch.

    It worked! Thank you sooooo much!!! I got this great deal on a new Women's PS4910WT Peugeot Swiss Genuine Ceramic (White) with Interchangeable Swarovski Crystal Bezel Set of 3 (Blue / Clear / Magenta). MSRP $395.00 for $99.99 at Costco! When is found it was way to loose. I was seriously considering returning it. I am so afraid to take my watches to get repairs anymore. Forget that I would have to spend another $30 to resize it, take the time to drop it off, pick it up... and by experience, a run a very high risk that I will get the watch back more "in need of repair" then when I presented it. (Suddenly I was thinking I may not have gotten such a good deal after all.) It's happened to me so many times: I've had my 'repaired' watches handed back to me with condensation inside, scratches, broken or jammed crowns or chronograph buttons, you name it. Of course, it is NEVER the repair shop's fault, the watch was 'received' that way! LOL. I am so grateful I found your video! I wish you endless blessings and prosperity to the end of TIME!

In regard to protecting watch link or band, and also back when/if replacing batteries, the use of transparent or similar tape will help guard and protect the watch link metal surface/finish to help avoid scratches. Simply cover exposed metal before working on the piece and then remove tape afterwards.

    Geat vid. As for a small tip a salesman once told me.. Sometimes you wanna apply a light touch of glue on the end where the screw was inserted, cause it's a common occurence, even when done by a professional that they sometimes slip out. then someone could be walking on the street as their watch slipped off the wrist gradually. this would prevent it easily and seem as if it was natural..

      Never, ever take TECHNICAL advice from a salesperson... because they have practically zero technical knowledge. Watches like this that have a split-pin (not a "screw" as the author of this vid called them) will open when the pin hasn't been punched down far enough -in point of fact you want to tap them down so that they are depressed (not just flush).
      There is also no value to using an adhesive on a split pin. When you have a watch that actually does have screws holding the links together, you may benefit from putting a dab of lock-tite on the grooves.

    When I adjusted my Michael kors watch to my size, the steel clasp makes the strap lie flat on my wrist. Is this normal?

    • @JustineJustified
      @JustineJustified  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Vivi33 I'm not sure, I've never had that problem. Aren't steel clasps normally curved? Perhaps try putting one link back and see how that goes. If it stays flat, maybe that's just how it supposed to look. Maybe. Hope this helps. So sorry if it doesn't.

    • @kianassary2149
      @kianassary2149 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vivi33 Logically, that's supposed to happen, since the watch is smaller, and not its original size. But I'm not seeing anyone else with problems like this, which is why I'm not going to take any wrists with my watch (pun) and just take it to the store.

      Kian Assary The steal buckle inside is curved a little, but it's mostly flat. I'm over it, as long as it works.

      Darlene Sun jeez. First, I work in work in the rolex store in England, but you wouldn't know, because you work in FINE jewelry. Just because someone is a little amateur and you are fake, you don't have to cut them down. Also, she is a LOT prettier than some of the ladies I see at rolex.

    I actually just finished removing links from my citizen navihawh AT before I watched the video. I pretty much did it the same way. My band has tighter links and is heavier so it was a bit more delicate of a process. I used a paper clip and a hammer. I placed the link to be removed over a screw hole in a piece of wood. I just watched your video because I wanted to compare methods, and you're extremely cute. ;)

    Nothing against the girl or how she did it but notice how the vid skipped ahead. Well that's cause it took her much longer to do it. It's not worth the blisters and frustration. Just go to Kay jewellers or some where and pay 10 bucks cause places that do that have the CORRECT tools that will take only seconds

    Justine, I watched a video of the same procedure done by a man who just didn't make it as clear as you did. I especially your description of the difference between the sides based on the shape of the peg end & also using the rubber-handled screwdriver. Seems like it would be just as effective as a mallet but easier to control. Well done!

    Thanks so much for uploading this video. It was of great help coz I had bought a new watch months ago n cud not wear it bcoz of its long chain. I removed I couple of links from the chain of my brand new watch taking help from ur video n doing exactly the way u did (like keep a towel below for better grip n lesser noise) and now I am wearing my new perfectly fitting watch n writing this review. Thanks a ton. :)
