Where the term “He ain’t heavy, … he’s my brother.” came from >>>>> "Those iconic words have symbolized the spirit of Boys Town for decades. But many people don’t know how it originated. Back in 1918, a boy named Howard Loomis was abandoned by his mother at Father Flanagan’s Home for Boys in Omaha, Nebraska, which had opened just a year earlier. Howard had polio and wore heavy leg braces. Walking was difficult for him, especially when he had to go up or down steps.Soon, several of the Home’s older boys were carrying Howard up and down the stairs. One day, Father Flanagan asked Reuben Granger, one of those older boys, if carrying Howard was hard.Reuben replied, “He ain’t heavy, Father… he’s my brother.” But the story doesn’t end there. In 1943, Father Flanagan was paging through a copy of Ideal magazine when he saw an image of an older boy carrying a younger boy on his back. The caption read, “He ain’t heavy, mister… he’s my brother.” Immediately, the priest was reminded of a photo of Reuben carrying Howard at a Boys Town picnic many years before. Father Flanagan wrote to the magazine and requested permission to use the image and quote. The magazine agreed, and Boys Town adopted them both to define its new brand.Nearly 75 years later, the motto is still the best description of what our boys and girls at Boys Town learn about the importance of caring for each other and having someone care about them.“He ain’t heavy” is relevant beyond Boys Town, though. At some point in our lives, most of us have needed to be carried by someone, metaphorically speaking. And, at some point, we probably carried somebody else. We’re human. We stumble. And we look to each other for help when we do".

There is a statue in a world famous boy orphanage called "Boy Town" in the state of Nebraska in the United States. Of a young boy on the back of another boy giving him a piggy back ride.
The story goes when a priest comes up to the boy who was carrying a boy who was disabled. The priest asked him if he can lend him a hand in carrying the boy?...The boy replied " Its okay father 'He ain't heavy he's my brother.' This is a true story... It became so famous that a stamp was made, and a statue. And now a song. Sung beautifully here by the Hollies. Priceless!

It's not about his brother but the brotherhood of all men we shouldn't fight we should help each other. People would rather watch people starve to death than giving free food for them to eat. It's all about money and not about mercy.

A while back I saw picture of a 10 year old boy in the under developed country carrying his eight year old brother on this back. He had far to walk. Someone asked him "He must be heavy" The other brother replied :He is not heavy, he's my brother. When you love someone, it gives you the strength you need to carry on to help them. Love can carries you through anything.

His brother is his fellow man - it is a Christian thought - that we are all brothers and sisters with God as our father. When your fellow man needs help, give it to him because he is your brother. That is what the song is about - caring for your fellow man.

I know here in America this song came out during the Vietnam war and a lot of the soldiers, including my dad, considered their platoon members as brothers. You could also see pictures of the boys in battle matched up with this song in what we used to call videos. As for me myself, my sister and I played this for my brother after he committed suicide.

The saying “He ain’t heavy Father, he’s m’ brother” was originally associated with Father Flanagan’s Boys Town located in Nebraska in 1917 which was a refuge for orphan boys during that period. There is a sculpture of a boy carrying his sleeping brother. He carried his brother all the way to Boys Town to join Father Flanagan

I feel sorry for the young generation. They are SO surprised at the music that my generation almost took for granted. I think the standard of performance was so high when I was young that the extraordinary was ordinary, simply because we didn't know anything other than good. And now these young guys hear this music from my youth and they are amazed because they have nothing that comes even remotely close to its high quality from their own generation.

"He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" describes a stronger person, either emotionally or physically who uncomplainingly provides support for someone, may be a brother or maybe just a friend or even an acquaintance who is finding it more difficult to make the same journey. The singer's only complaint is that not everyone is prepared to make the same compromises.
    thanks spanisheyes for requesting this
The title came from the motto for Boys Town, a community formed in 1917 by a Catholic priest named Father Edward Flanagan. Located in Omaha, Nebraska, it was a place where troubled or homeless boys could come for help. In 1941, Father Flanagan was looking at a magazine called The Messenger when he came across a drawing of a boy carrying a younger boy on his back, with the caption, "He ain't heavy Mr., he's my brother." Father Flanagan thought the image and phrase captured the spirit of Boys Town, so he got permission and commissioned a statue of the drawing with the inscription, "He ain't heavy Father, he's my brother."

The phrase He Ain’t Heavy, he’s my brother “ was part of a logo for Boy’s Town, a charitable organization dedicated to helping orphaned boys. It featured a boy carrying a younger boy on his back with the caption, He Ain’t Heavy,, He’s My Brother. It epitomized the organization’s belief in all residents helping each other and having someone care about them.
    The logo inspired this song.

I have loved this song for 45 years or more. It still brings tears to my eyes.
It is such a powerful expression of the love we all need for our fellow humans in the Brotherhood of Man(kind).
Reach out to those in need of help, care for those who need a little love in this cold world.
Treat others how you would want them to treat you.
Is that too much to ask? It seems pretty simple to me.
Maybe I'm getting soft as I get older; but believe me, when I wore a younger man's clothes I was hard as nails.
What did that kind of perspective get me? Nothing good I'll tell you that much.
So, you know, just try to be a little kinder to each other.

They're still touring but the current band only has 2 of the original line-up. This song wasn't written by anyone in the band, but they certainly made it their own.

They were from Manchester, they only ever had 1 session musician and the guy who played the piano on this song was Elton john! They paid him £15. Boy's Town Nebraska, the statue of a boy carrying a smaller boy on his back. The caption reads "He ain't heavy he's my brother". The story goes that a boy showed up at Boy's Town in the 1930's during a snow storm . Father Flanagan not realizing that it was a smaller boy on his back started taking off the blanks he was wrapped in and was shocked at what he found. The older brother then made that now famous statement. I don't know if this factual or not but it should be!

It's not a slang term. It's about a young boy carrying his brother who had polio and been abandoned at a boys home back in 1918 and a priest asked the boy if he's heavy, which the boy replied he isn't heavy father, he's my brother. Now the meaning is metaphorical, pain doesn't matter when it's for people you love.

Good to see you guys having a laugh, as well as giving us some thoughtful comments. Some other reviewers can get too reverential just in case they might get negative comments, but you lads are being honest. Keep up the good work.

This music is wasted on you, stop messing about, if the guy your looking at was with you he'd reach for the off button, your generation is the hip hop, enough said! This is 1 of 2 massive hits the Hollies had!

A wakeup call. Just remember that sometimes when you do a reaction video, it could be incredibly personal to a viewer. In 1987 I was stabbed by my brother 5 times. Died twice on the table: was in a coma for 8 1/2 days. He did 10 years and came out a vegetable. I am closer to him than all of my siblings. Serious back story. This song for him.
