Personally, I think this show is on another level in how it posed the main dilemma of the story. This love ban is not based on some groundless, unreasonable whim. It's a position that many might support in real life, and it makes its own kind of sense: many people, throughout history, and even nowadays in the world, think that feelings are a dangerous distraction from serious business. Here, the story is set in the highest realms of Heaven, where the denizens have a responsibility towards the whole universe. That's why, it's said, they're forbidden from love. Plus, Yingyuan sees himself as someone who was born out of deceit, his evil father fooled his naive mother with the excuse of love, and the only saving grace for Yingyuan is to make amends, his existence is only justified by serving the greater good. That's how he was raised by a strict, but otherwise loving, foster father. Add to that, he got the trauma of having to kill Sixuan with his own hands, as a reminder of the love ban. Putting an end of her life ended up being an act of mercy for her, imagine how twisted this cut must be in his conscience. It all makes a lot of sense that he would be outwardly so set against love. This story will prove an alternative point of view. But it only works so well because there are, after all, solid reasons to why Yingyuan denies his love so strongly in the beginning.
I have watched Cheng Yi's work since 'Love and Redemption' and he truly is the Prince of Costume Drama and always acts (whatever the character) with great sincerity. Good chemistry with the beautiful Yang Zi. I am getting the box of tissues ready for the tears - trouble won't be far ahead.

I think Zhixi being the weak one was not just about talents but also about her personality and maturity. Her character is both weak in personality and talent compared to her sister. “The lady of the lotus” represents female energy as her highest self. That means being born already self nurtured and universal nurturing. The energy of bravery, creation and innate wisdom. All these are qualities that YanDan possessed soon as the Lotus bloomed and they took human form. She was curious, even brave enough to challenge Lord Ying Yuan. And she never was interested in traditional forms of education. She always sought deeper knowledge with an open and wise perspective. Although always willing to admit her mistakes and striving to be better. She always takes up a challenge with courage and confidence. But ZhiXi usually has to try extra hard, and tends to follow what others expect of her instead of her own path. This is what I mean when I say she is weaker in both talent and personality.
However you can't expect someone to have strong character when you're always bullied while growing up without anyone standing up for her. Yandan defends her but she has no status, so it doesn't help. Yes, when you're strong no one dares to bully you, however when you got bullied once and no one help... Especially in a society where social hierarchy plays such a big role like here in this movie. You will sooner or later get an emotional break down and has low self esteem. Frankly speaking, it is really the thing I do not miss the most of my cultural origin, where social hierarchy has such a big influence... People would always try to butter up their superior and those in higher position can basically get away with whatever crimes they committed. No one dares to raise even their voice, let alone to ask for justice. Having a good boss is practically just relying on luck. When you're unlucky, you'd be bullied and never know how to find help. Victims of Bullying are often either becoming a psychopath, suicidal or being killed instead... that is unfortunately the reality even in our real world. It is very rare that one could walk out of that dark path unscathed..especially when no one around them aware about the core issue and willing to give unconditional support and strong enough to do so as well.
