  • In this episode, Courtney Granville, Chief Scientific Officer at GO2 for Lung Cancer, hosts Dr. Jorge J. Nieva from USC. They explore the critical topic of clinical trials and address common questions and concerns patients might have.
Dr. Nieva provides an in-depth explanation of what clinical trials are, emphasizing their systematic and rigorous nature in testing new treatments or comparing existing ones. He highlights the different phases of clinical trials:
Phase 1: Determines the best dose and schedule for a new drug.
Phase 2: Assesses the effectiveness and safety in a larger group.
Phase 3: Compares the new treatment against the current standard of care.
Phase 4: Collects additional data after the drug is approved to monitor long-term effects and performance in diverse populations.
Dr. Nieva underscores the importance of clinical trials in advancing cancer treatment, noting that many improvements in lung cancer care have resulted from patients participating in these trials.
    Key points discussed include:
Eligibility: Who can participate in clinical trials and the importance of being relatively healthy.
Finding Trials: Resources like clinicaltrials.gov and GO2's LungMATCH program can help patients find suitable trials.
Patient Experience: Clinical trials often involve more frequent monitoring and tests, but patients can leave the trial at any time if they choose.
The episode aims to demystify clinical trials and encourage patients to consider them as a viable option for treatment, contributing to the advancement of cancer care.
