No. SO MUCH on the radio WAS CRAP! One had to be connected to get the good stuff. Back then, early and mid-80s, I picked up London’s NME - the New Musical Express, a week late, at the news stand, Drink tea and read it at the Kebab dive.
I wholly agree. It has both a counter rhythm but almost is like a back-up singer in terms of the notes themselves. Truly an amazing yet subtle part of the song that ties the entire thing together and makes the chorus SUPER catchy.
Happy 40th birthday "Cruel Summer". Forty years ago today, Monday June 27, 1983, "Cruel Summer" was released. This song will stay in my memory forever, because it also embodies my attitude towards life in the 80s and what made the great music of that time so special to me. Behind all the energy and joie de vivre you can feel that pain and longing that deep emotions bring with them. The more years go by, the more clearly I hear this longing. She has always been an important part of me and always will be. Thank you Bananarama and thank you Cruel Summer. Congratulations from Berlin, Germany
I would love to return to the ‘80s and relive all that great music. I get overwhelmed thinking about that marvelous time and all the fun I had! I really don’t care for the music of today, although I live in a city with a great college radio station (Radio K) that listen to regularly.
Ahh, the summer of 1984! Reaganomics going full throttle, Reagan beats Mondale in a landslide, Karate Kid a block buster, 99¢ a gallon gasoline, 80¢ Whopper Jumbo Jack Arby's roast beef Big Mac burgers. And Banana Rama's mega hit playing on every radio station all over USA. Great summer great year great song great country great music great era great time great people great time to be alive. Glad I lived it.
Yes, song released in the UK in 83 but didn't chart in the US until the release of The Karate Kid in 84 in which it featured on the soundtrack. It wasn't a cruel summer in 84 for the reasons you give and many more. 2023's summer is a lot more cruel because mostly the good things that existed in 84 are today utterly lost. And for those not fortunate enough to have been around for the music of the 80s the sounds aren;t the only things you're missing (ergo - cheap fuel, sane and non-corrupt governance, good movies, good science fiction books, side-walks without human feces and syringes every 2 steps, colleges where possessing an inquiring mind is actually a good thing etc etc)
Reagan was our worst President! He suffocated the Vietnam War veterans when he destroyed documents on Agent Orange to protect Down Chemical and Monsanto from lawsuits!! May he be screaming in hell's fire!
The best decade in terms of music production, the eighties, where the talent was real, unlike the current commercial garbage, only those of us who lived in that time, know how that era was, that will hardly be equaled, it was the best decade.
Someone else said this on some other video, but to quote a random stranger on the internet: "80s music makes me feel nostalgic about a time before I was born".

Man oh man.. 80's what a decade of pure bliss for us who grew up in that era.
I'm 52 now, i totally do agree with you

Everyone seemed happy in the 80s.
The 80’s : best musical decade ever
Yes
90's also
This is just one of those iconic 80's songs that will still sound great in any decade!
The guitar makes it all particularly wicked. It works really well.
I wholly agree. It has both a counter rhythm but almost is like a back-up singer in terms of the notes themselves. Truly an amazing yet subtle part of the song that ties the entire thing together and makes the chorus SUPER catchy.
The single greatest female rock group song ever and one of the great songs ever. Brilliant.
