I'm subscribed to a lot more of chess channels, but only MatoJelic makes chess look so epic, like some sort of heroic medieval war. I love when he creates expectation asking for the best move, and after you finally found it, he shows the goofiest continuation just to break the ice, that's just awesome xD
"Rook to a1...has nothing to do with chess" ^^ I just love the way you're commenting! It's as much entertaining as it's instructive. Great selection of games and you're explaining it so well...simple and logically without confusing - like many other on Utube do. You are the Best! I am always looking forward to pause and try to find the Killer Move^^ and the jokes you put in are just the cherry on the cake. Keep up with it! There are many players who really appreciate the lot of work you put in!
great video, my favorite mato line is when you say a player is losing in all variations but one. black must have felt terrible losing this one and im surprised white allowed the queen capture i guess he calculated the whole game out practically or prepared very well.
29.Bf7+? Did you borrow that bishop from another set. Because White hasn't got light squared bishop additionally pawn is siting on f7. You are not allowed to have two pieces on one square.
There is a second way to checkmate at the end. Instead of Bg7++, Bc1+ (discovered, with the bishop blocking the new queen) also closes the net. A slightly more subtle tactic.
White can also play at 8:55 Bc1 discovered check and preventing queen from taking rook. It also leads to check mate: Kg2, Rh7+, Kf8, Bh6+, Ke7 and then f8 promoting - check mate. But it's a little longer variation..
Just because I know that despite this comment being a year old you have pondered day and night on this question with no success (and also for other people reading the comments who want to know) I found this: If na3 then Qd3, after nxb1, Qe3, nc7 (only way to prevent Qh6 Qg7 checkmate), Qh6, ne8, Ng5 and then I see no way for black to prevent Qh7 checkmate. If black doesn't take the rook then the rook can run away and the queen is left in a better position.
It's amazing the way white sacrificed two queens for the black king while the 2 black queens were still sitting on the board helplessly..... Demonstrates the beauty of chess! Thanks a lot Mato... for showing us this (and a lot other) extraordinary chess games....
I don't get it, how would Bxh6 en passant ( which can't be done by bishops, only pawns ) or Bishop moves to f8 again when Bishop is already was taken by rook according to your scenario?!
If you mean Bg7+ instead of Nxh7 at 7:58, then the king escapes. I calculated that variation, and was disappointed to see it was the wrong line. Somehow I missed that the king gets away - via f8, which later gets blocked by the capture of the queening pawn, after which the mating motif I calculated works. This was deep.
I believe that at 7:43, if white played bishop to g7 then black will definitely be checkmated next turn? Because the king would be in check it would have to take the king, which then leaves it to checkmate when the rook comes up to h7. I'm seeing this right, right?
If Bf8 then the black queen takes the rook on h1 and black wins. But you can play Bc1 with discovered check and it blocks the queen from taking the rook.
After White pawn promotes I paused for a long time and came up with Rxf8, Bc1 check (from rook) Kg7, and then Rh7. I was disappointed it took me so long and I was wrong. But after I looked at it more I think it still works. Of course I am new at it and can never spot this stuff unless I know I am suppose to find it. I wish when I was playing Mato's voice would say in my head "now we have reached critical position in game...." so I knew I was suppose to be looking for a killer move.
No disrespect meant there, in case that last comment seemed snarky. A couple of seconds of puzzlement, then "OH!" This was an incredibly deep combination, one reason correspondence chess is so valuable.
Mato, I was looking at the 2013 game between Aronian and Anand that was featured in the NY Times. Could you explain this game, especially the move by black to move the bishop ( 15 Bc5). Why couldn't white take the bishop after that move with his pawn? Your videos are excellent.
What an attack! Everything but the kitchen sink, as they say. But I can't help wondering, as Black's knights and pawns closed on White's queen, just how nervous White was about his prospects.
Hi Mato.I have a question at 07:42 how about bishop from h6 check and after King takes bishop rock to h7 check-mate? am i wrong did i miss something? please answer.Thank you and keep up the good work.
Moving that knight allows the queen to fly to the kingside, via f1 square, with threat of Qh3-h6. A quick look makes me think that the attack is unstoppable after 1...Na3 2.Qf1 Nxb1 3.Qh3 h4 4.gf
Amazing game! Before queen is traped it's possible to feel the forcing moves that ends in whites victory. All black pieces are in the queen side and the center of the board it's close for transfering defense. The game is very horizontal in epic sacrifices for winning.
+Shef. D That was the move I thought of immediately as well! I was surprised that he moved with the knight instead. But there was an escape square for the King --> f8
Well Bf8+ will obviously not work because the new queen will capture the rook. I was referring to the move Bg7+ . It wont work without promoting because then after king captures and rook swings down to check, the king will escape via the f8 square. So its necessary to promote and get the black's own rook to block that escape =)
I'm in a battle right now with a game where I have his king trapped but his def is to solid and now my opponent is pressuring my king and I'm having to back track. Its going to be a real nail biter
Thank you mato,my conclusion is that i coudn't find better teacher than you on the web.Well done once again
fantastic game. always enjoy your videos Mato. Keep posting them. thanks a lot.

"He could have promoted the pawn to a horse or a donkey." Hilarious as always! Thank you very much for all these videos...
These games are brilliant, thank you v much Mato
Unbelievable game. Thanks a lot for the video Mato!
i like your lecture Mato.. and i've download so many video from you. i like your jokes too... thanks Mato. keep on making video.
As a longtime devout French defense player, I have to say it's still wonderful to see a game like this. I want to replay this for sure.
wow that was actually pretty exiting. It was kind of like you were telling a story of a true battle. Good job on making it suspenseful!
The best chess game ever. Keep up the commentary Mato. Youa re awesome
amazing game! what a sac ! thank you very much mr. jelic!
Great game mato. Thank you. its very appreciated. Keep up good work and bye for now
Watch: Boris Spassky vs Mato Jelic
Great finish in french defence. Nice one Mato.
Ah, one of my favourite types of game. Positional vs Material advantage.
Very nice video, Mato!
great video, my favorite mato line is when you say a player is losing in all variations but one. black must have felt terrible losing this one and im surprised white allowed the queen capture i guess he calculated the whole game out practically or prepared very well.
The real goal in chess is to give check mate... this video shows us that! Thank you, Mato!
29.Bf7+? Did you borrow that bishop from another set. Because White hasn't got light squared bishop additionally pawn is siting on f7. You are not allowed to have two pieces on one square.
This is my personal favourite game of all time.
Amazing Mato!
There is a second way to checkmate at the end. Instead of Bg7++, Bc1+ (discovered, with the bishop blocking the new queen) also closes the net. A slightly more subtle tactic.
is there some good reason why at 4:46 black shouldn't win exchange sacrifice with Na3(or perhaps win dark square bishop)?
Great game!
hahahaha
shame on the queen that can not fly xD
I really enjoyed watching this video. Thank you Mato :)
Incredible!
Man, you are savage, I fell into your trap of Ra1 :D :D :D...
White can also play at 8:55 Bc1 discovered check and preventing queen from taking rook. It also leads to check mate: Kg2, Rh7+, Kf8, Bh6+, Ke7 and then f8 promoting - check mate. But it's a little longer variation..
yes, thank you!
Magic in chessboard. Thanks Mato.
there is also another way to checkmate at on 8:51 Bc1+ Kg7 Rh7+ Kf8 Bh6+ Ke7 then f8=Q # but it takes to moves more than the one shown in the video
4:50 why not knight to a3 attacking queen and rook?
Idk, but I'm guessing the queen would take the shortest route to h6 while he can't prepare (I guess g5 then h6 would delay it)
Because he wanted to trap the queen
Just because I know that despite this comment being a year old you have pondered day and night on this question with no success (and also for other people reading the comments who want to know) I found this:

Superb

True
spectacular...!
At 9:31, I thought you made a blunder in the analysis bcuz, I thought you were going to take the Queen, but I was wrong... Nice analysis Mato!
WOW what an amazing game indeed!
Oh man. The captions for this game is hilarious
Incredible game!
Great vide9
at 7.38, the second "pause" of the video, can white play Bg7+? the black king captures (Kxg7), then Rh7+
how about it?
Answers to FAQ can be found on My Channel: About Mato
amazing!
at 7:30 Bf8 if rook takes, rook takes h7, if h5, Bxh6 (en pasant). After any black move Bf8 again. Is that mate, or am i missing sth?
Bishops cannot take en passant. Only pawns can do that.
I don't get it, how would Bxh6 en passant ( which can't be done by bishops, only pawns ) or Bishop moves to f8 again when Bishop is already was taken by rook according to your scenario?!
i like the part when he commented with a promotion of donkey...instead of a queen....
Bravo Mato !!
Great Game.
because knight on c4 is blocking quick route of white queen to h6 through f1, so after Na3 Qf1 Nxb1 Qh3 black is dead.
Amazing calculation.
If you mean Bg7+ instead of Nxh7 at 7:58, then the king escapes. I calculated that variation, and was disappointed to see it was the wrong line. very very nice a dream game
Pretty incredible.
thx mato!
Mato's trick no longer fools me :DD
thanks. u r right
8:00 instead of Nxh7 I think Bf8 is faster. Is there a way for black to stop Rxh7# on the next move?
I believe that at 7:43, if white played bishop to g7 then black will definitely be checkmated next turn? Because the king would be in check it would have to take the king, which then leaves it to checkmate when the rook comes up to h7. I'm seeing this right, right?
i would play bishop to F8 i think is check Mate in three ?
Yes, that's what I thought too..
torturing
won't queen take the rook?
If Bf8 then the black queen takes the rook on h1 and black wins. But you can play Bc1 with discovered check and it blocks the queen from taking the rook.
ChernobylPizza on 7:40
It doesn't take much to check -mate a king, just the right tactics and a wrong move from the opponent
Brilliant :)
Love the way he made black's Rook block the King in by taking on f8 :)
After White pawn promotes I paused for a long time and came up with Rxf8, Bc1 check (from rook) Kg7, and then Rh7. I was disappointed it took me so long and I was wrong. I like that comment when mato says: "Rook to a1, has nothing to do with the game of chess." LOL As usual, off-the-charts!
No disrespect meant there, in case that last comment seemed snarky. A couple of seconds of puzzlement, then "OH!" This was an incredibly deep combination, one reason correspondence chess is so valuable.
@ 7:26 why cant white play bishop to f8 with threat of rook takes h7 checkmate?
Rook to A1... Which has nothing to do with the game of chess... Lmao... I laughed so hard I cried :)
So close and still so far!
Two queens, a rook and and a pony down in material and winning like a boss, appart from the winning part it sums up my games pretty well
That's so obvious, now that you said it, don't know how I missed it!
on 1:10, why couldn't en passant be move?
what if bishop goes to f8 on 7:40?
you are king man mato king matoo !! :))

in 9:22, what about BxR?
Hi Mato.I have a question at 07:42 how about bishop from h6 check and after King takes bishop rock to h7 check-mate? am i wrong did i miss something? please answer.Thank you and keep up the good work.
Why notbishop to G7 in critical position?
Moving that knight allows the queen to fly to the kingside, via f1 square, with threat of Qh3-h6. A quick look makes me think that the attack is unstoppable after 1...Na3 2.Qf1 Nxb1 3.Qh3 h4 4.gf

at 7.30 black square bishop sacrifice to g7 leads to checkmate in 2 moves :)
+Shef. D That was the move I thought of immediately as well! I was surprised that he moved with the knight instead.
+Shef. D That was the move I thought of immediately as well! I was surprised that he moved with the knight instead.
But there was an escape square for the King --> f8
+Tav Tron oh i see, missed that move completely, thanks
thought the same first. looks pretty strong
fk yeah :D found the killa' move
Absolute genius!
at 7:58 Bf8 threatens Rxh7 mate?
+Gustavo Suarez Black can simply move his pawn up two
See other comment
Ah.. yes. You're right. Good stuff!
I think the mate was available much early and white only prolonged the mate in order to sacrifice everything and make it spectacular.
What would YOU comment .. in this position
If you had Mato's keyboard.?
So this is where count Von Count from sesame street ended up!!
Why not rook a1? :D
Well I got the hxg killer move but I guessed Bg7+ on the last one.
bishop f8 in the end,is also checkmate.
Well Bf8+ will obviously not work because the new queen will capture the rook. I was referring to the move Bg7+ . It wont work without promoting because then after king captures and rook swings down to check, the king will escape via the f8 square. So its necessary to promote and get the black's own rook to block that escape =)
what an attack!
Yeah, I thought the same thing. For about two seconds.
Instead of Nf6, why not Bg5? doesn't that also work?
Ha ha ha ha! Funniest video I've seen yet! Great game too.
I'm in a battle right now with a game where I have his king trapped but his def is to solid and now my opponent is pressuring my king and I'm having to back track. Its going to be a real nail biter
