People tend to forget that this is Ireland we live in, not South America!! Topless cubicles are a joke, and accumulate diabolical amounts of soiled water. Interesting to see how these systems fared out during the wet & windy winter of 2015/16, and what these people's opinions were then having put themselves and the cows through such misery
Farm i work on has 550 topless cubicles, i dont like them at all when the snow hit in march the late calvers thst werent on a straw bed were on the cubicles huddled in 1 corner, very little cover for animals
so first farmer were advised to use wood chip pads to keep cattle on during winter, now that that isn't good enough they are told to have open air cubicles, next you'll be telling them to put a roof on it. should have just built the shed in the first place, the roof is the cheapest part, even if you lose 10-15 cows in the next 20 years to mastitis or other ailments due to not having a roof you would have made the money for the roof. never mind the bother with storing all that soiled water, and inevitable feed losses from an uncovered dung passage and feed pad. this culture teagasc and the irish farmers journal have promoted and instilled in the south of ireland of spending as little as possible to limit risk from failed return on investment, actually causes most of the reasons that farmers may not see a return on investment.
oh and add to that the loss in production as the animals expend more energy heating themselves up and need more feed. the money wasted here is unbelievable.
Most cows are standing up rather than sitting in the stalls. Are the "beds" just concrete with rubber on top? Clearly, the cows are telling their owner that this free stall system is terrible
A bad idea I reckon. No shelter from the rain, wind, snow or in summer(and subject to the Sun shining) the direct Sun beating down on them if they were in the cubicles and not in the field. A few farmers now zero graze so it could happen. I only work on farm's but if I farmed, I would not have topless cubicles.
The 1st farms scraper needs new rubbers, what a shitty mess,no shelter whatsoever, cows will always head for a dry area when its wet, they have no option here.(n)

JCB411abuser they wanted to combine the disadvantages of pasture grazing with the disadvantages of stalls all in one???
Most cows are standing up rather than sitting in the stalls. Are the "beds" just concrete with rubber on top? Clearly, the cows are telling their owner that this free stall system is terrible
Ray Devries Yeah I don't know what they are doing here but we usually put some bedding on those, in the form of straw or sand.
Ray Devries ue i saw that and i went down to the comments to see if anyone else noticed
without a doubt there will be a roof over these yards withing 2 or 3 years.
Tommy Breen they have both seems like. Guess because it's Ireland--rarely cold or hot.
How did the cows like them in the snow
Apparently many cows and calves were lost in Ireland during the snow last year. I don't know how this particular farm fared
Hello
If snow ❄️ storm came with 30” ?
What if you did a topless barn with a french drain style floor covered with sand??
A bad idea I reckon. No shelter from the rain, wind, snow or in summer(and subject to the Sun shining) the direct Sun beating down on them if they were in the cubicles and not in the field. How about cold weather
no roof in wintertime?? i don,t like that! and neighter will the cows.
The feed looks some mess.
What in case of rain, wind and summer??
Put a clear roof over it which will allow light in and no sides to allow air circulation.
Why arent any cows laying down?
Somethings should always be topless, a shed is one of those
Horrific. No animal welfare. The farmers need to live like these poor animals and see how much he likes it
wonder if they have a problem with lameness.. they're all standing up in every clip
Very good

Poor cows would be Miserable!!
John Deere 68g30 fan
Big place you have. How many you milking?🐄🐄🐄🐄
IS THAT A ANIMAL WELFARE IN COLD DAYS AND HOT DAYS ???
george saunders put a roof on part of his feeding area and the milk went up , they would rather a roof deffo
I want work
No problem rainning
This is meant to be progress
Pity didn't video on wet day, get more realistic opinion on the idea.
Wow that bad
The farmer should try a few years in a topless house himself, cheap and weather wont bother him
What happens in rainy season?
