There was nothing like korns first album. I hadn’t heard anything like it. And haven’t since.
While I love the first album, Life is Peachy is still my favorite. But I completely agree.

Issues is my favorite Korn album but there's no question the debut s/t is something special.
I don’t even really like Korn in general but when this album came out it blew my mind.
We all sat around in homeroom listening to that album in pieces with the headphones turned up all the way so we could all hear it. Because, y'know, only one guy had a copy.
Fun fact: He recorded the bagpipes outside looking into a canyon nearby the studio. You can hear the birds singing in the background.
This album will help anybody through tough times younger or older. This album will help with depression, bullying, drugs or any other big issues people go through. Korn will reach into your chest, mess with your brain, give you motivation and hug and put their hand on your shoulder. Great band and deserve all the respect.

“Ring around the Rosies” refers to the red rings that started to develop on plague victim's skin. These red rashes, that were circular, would later develop into large, and very painful black boils on the skin. “Pockets Full of Posies” stems from the lack of knowledge at the time about how diseases spread. It was believed that disease was spread through bad smells, which means that people held bunches of flowers to their faces when going out in public, to protect themselves from bad smells. "Ashes, Ashes” it’s actually about the burning of the dead bodies from the victims of the plague. “We all fall down” is about the many people who died from the plague. The falling down is said to represent death, and everyone “falls down” or dies, because the majority of the European population was wiped out during the time of the plague.
The way Johnathan Davis comes in with Mary Had a Little Lamb is so viscious! Lol Makes me so happy everytime! 😂 Korn is so damn awesome!

Clown is the song that helped me in high school as a skinny short teen and a bit of an outcast.
They helped me show that I wasn't alone and even helped me find new friends who had similar taste in music and were more like me.

The genre started with two bands: Korn and Deftones. Deftones will bring you the sensual side of Nu-Metal and they have a different heaviness compared to Korn. You'll like it.

Deftones is one of the band that has stayed with me through 24 years since I first found them. They have released on a regular basis and not released a single album I haven't liked and definitely have a distinct sound. Well worth checking out.

Deftones also had more of a progressive rock influence as well. Similar to Mudvayne though they were way heavier than Deftones and rather than 60% Nu Metal, 20% Hard Rocker, and 20% Progressive Rock - like the Deftones were, Mudvayne was more 60% Progressive Metal, 30% Alternative Metal, 10% Nu Metal. Those two and Korn were really the three cornerstones of that scene in the late 90's to mid 2000's.

Jonathans presence is so visceral and raw in this album. It is Amazing.
Can confirm. I was 15 or 16 when this hit the air and that switch to Mary Had a Little Lamb blew our minds! There's a lot of vocals on that album where Jon is just being some kinda wild crazy man (a little like Mike Patton). So much amazing alternative stuff came out in '94, but these guys had something really unique. IIRC the guitarists, Munky and Head, did some unusual tuning on 7-string guitars which had them really stand out from everything else.
Lucky. For me, "Blind" was the one we couldn't get over so only the guy we knew who had the cassette got to listen to the whole thing. We didn't think you could get harder than "Blind" but we were in high school and the album was new so...

Yup same happened with me, never thought I could relive a memory. Remember hearing this song for the first time and this is what made me love Korn. Freak on a leash falling away from me coming undone, those were good songs. But shoots and ladders.. hit so different. I remember someone had made a compilation video of clips from 300 movie, and had this track playing over it. Great times.

I stopped listening to them after Head went crazy with religion. Not that him leaving made the band bad, they just went in a direction I didn't really like. They're still amazing and I don't mind listening, it just not something I naturally put on my playlist

One fun thing about this song is that it makes absolutely NO SENSE if you didn't grow up with those particular nursery rhymes. Being Swedish, I grew up with a completely different set of nursery rhymes, so this song was always just...so odd. Hahahaha.
As for the next song by Korn, I can recommend Blind. Especially the live performance at Rock Am Ring 2007. I think you've only reacted to studio album versions of Korn songs, right? It's high time to introduce you to their live performances. They are crazy. Blind was the first song on their debut album, and it *really* set the tone for them. Can't be a better song to introduce yourself to the world with.

JD breathes live into his music. The band creates the world with their magestic sound and JD breathes live with his voice. Such a good band, even now.
As a proud SCOTSMAN, I really appreciate the bagpipes. Also love that Jonathan loves his Scottish ancestory and wears a kilt, even not a usual kilt, doesnt matter, its different and cool. I wish when I was 18 I appreciated the music more, as I was young when they were massive like Woodstock 99, shame I didn't travel over from Scotland for this. Love your channel keeping this music alive.

And the Ring around the rosey song dates back to the Bubonic plague.
I still love the bagpipes in the beginning, it gives the song such a cool vibe; plus, the fact that Jonathan Davis is playing them is even better.
I'm here to recommend two of Korn's biggest influences again, as per the Wikipedia article on Korn: Mr. Bungle and Faith No More. Both have the same singer - Mike Patton - though Faith No More had a different singer for their 1985 and 1987 albums. For Mr. Bungle, their self-titled album (1991) is the most relevant for influence, though fair warning: it is weird. Check out 'Carousel', 'Egg' (stop at ~7min 30s if you want, the rest is a recording of them talking on a train...) and 'Quote Unquote' - formerly known as 'Travolta'.
With Faith No More, it depends: The Real Thing (1989) is the album that got popular, with 'Epic' getting loads of play to the point that some people call the band a one hit wonder; 'Falling To Pieces' and 'Surprise! You're Dead' are also fantastic. I'd argue Angel Dust (1992), their subsequent release, is more influential and just all around a better album. My favorite tracks from that one are probably 'A Small Victory', 'Midlife Crisis', and... I'm gonna censor the title: 'J***lobber', but it's really hard to single out tracks since the entire thing is absolutely killer. Finally, if you want more Mr. Bungle, California (1999) is consistently incredible; start with 'Retrovertigo', then maybe 'Goodbye Sober Day' and 'The Air-conditioned Nightmare', then... the rest of the album.
Korn holds a special place in my heart. This album was the first metal album I bought when I was a kid, and I played the crap out of it. The bassist in the band stirred up my interest in learning to play the bass. Also, Babymetal opened for them on tour in 2017.
I was finally able to see Korn live in concert just last year. Never was able to back in the day. Jonathon Davis came out playing the bagpipes very last song and sang this. I completely lost my shit and shouted as loud as I could every word of this song. 42 years old and this band took me back to being 15 years old that night. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

This song is new to me and I didn't know he 's a piper, but very impressed. Bearing in mind many nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and children's stories are really dark . And so was his childhood so I get it. Knick knack Paddy Whack is very disturbing given what he went through. (I'd say think about it but really you can't unthink it so don't) The power of Korn I'd that they convey so much raw emotion, so much of it ugly. Because nothing changes unless we come to grips with it. Great reaction!
This is one of the greatest and darkest debut metal albums of all time. It's my personal favorite, when I bought it in 1994 it blew my mind and it still does til this day. So many relatable songs and lyrics that just tear at the heart strings. Jon's vocals are phenomenal, haunting and legendary. They have influenced so many bands that it's not even funny. I'm from small town western Kansas. I remember when I was 16 in 1999. Two buddies of mine and I were cruising around town in the summer time, blaring rock and metal music from the car with the windows down. We were sitting at a stop light when this song came on. The poor person next to us wasn't ready. Little ole lady from a much more conservative time. First, there was confusion as she heard bagpipes coming from the car next to her. Then, even more confusion to see these bagpipes were being enjoyed by 3 teenage boys dressed all in black, baseball caps sporting different band logos, and deeply black wrap around sunglasses like the little edge lords we thought we were. That confusion turned into abject terror when the guitars and drums kicked in, and we started nodding our in head unison to the beat all while looking right at her. I've never watched a little old lady drive so fast in my life when the light turned green. We were just jamming and meant no harm.

Back in high school, my girlfriend at the time was complaining we didn't have a 'song'. We were driving and I told her the next song to come on will be 'our song'. This was it. Think of her every time I hear it. I still miss her.
"The pocketful of posies" relates to the flowers stuffed into the pockets of the dead st the time of the plague.
1-2 buckle my shoe is a poem about death sweeping through a small village.
London Bridge actually did fall down and many people were killed.
This was the first band to call attention to how violent those stories were, let we taught them to our children.

Scotland loves Korn, and JD loves us and the pipes and kilt. I was in the crowd of a Glasgow gig on his birthday. The band brought out a cake, and the crowd sang happy birthday, it was awesome. I wish there was a recording of it.

I was in 5th grade when this album came out. I had an older sister so I got into it right away. I was a fan right away. I had a traumatic thing happen to me right at that time and it was cathartic.

You have to listen to the song before this on the album "Faget" it's raw and deep, not quite to the level of daddy, it's an amazing track, and your comment on the snare tone, David hit the skins pretty hard, in fact he hit them so hard he actually broke his wrist on stage.

Nursery rhymes are generally creepy or have meanings that are dark. London bridge is falling down...the great fire of London. Ring of roses is about the plague 'we all fall down'...'cradle will fall'....babies falling from trees. And so on and so forth
“Ring around a rosie” was the red circular rash that developed on those with the plaque.
“Pocket full of posies” many people carried posies around in their pockets as it was thought to ward of catching the plaque

The reason for Shoots and Ladders was a depiction of the nursery rhymes we were all told are not the happy rainbows and sunshine stories be were to believe. They have very dark meanings and origins.
"Into my childhood, they're spoon-fed," we are told these as children without second thought or what they mean.
"Hidden violence revealed, darkness that seems real," the dark and usually violent truths of these nursery rhymes create a subconscious ripple effect on a child's mind.
There is a ton of meaning behind very few words that is told masterfully.
This is my second favorite KoRn song. The bagpipes in the beginning of the song is actually Johnathan Davis playing the bagpipes. Blind should be next. Great reaction as well

apparently the 'london bridge' song refers to when the bridge was built they thought they needed child sacrifices to keep the bridge from falling down. they even found child bones inside the base of the bridge somewhat recently.

It is raw, less processed, less commercialized....it is a masterpiece to this day.

Seen Korn live during the Follow the Leader tour (I'm old) but by the end of the show he was just laying on the stage gasping for air, Jonathan Davis gives everything during a show. Such an amazing live show.
Hes got asthma pretty bad, he hits an oxygen tank between songs now (has been for a while).

Jonathan's been playing bagpipes for years since he was young, and his songs rock, even with the bagpipes!
This was my first Korn song I ever heard, it changed my perspective on what a "nu" sound of heavy music could be. This album influenced rock and metal music for a good 10 years. I saw them last September at Louder Than Life festival and Jonathan sounded ( and looked) better than he has in a long time. I guess he is sober. I uploaded a "highlights" video of the festival performances, check it out and you can see what I mean.
I saw KoRn (and Deftones) open for Ozzy just before their first album official release.
I think Blind was the first song they played and Shoots and Ladders was mid-set. They shut the lights off and there was silence and we thought the set was already over. Then you just hear the bagpipes, and finally a spotlight hits Jonathan walking in front of the stage by security. And in the crowd, everyone is like “wtf is this?!” and when the drums hit and the song fully starts we were all mesmerized and head bobbing to the beat. And even though we haven’t heard the song before we could all sing along.
Johnathan Davis is playing the bagpipes. Hes Scottish-American which also answers why he is seen wearing a kilt in Korn's music videos and live performances.
A lot of childhood nursery rhymes were to help children deal death in the Middle Ages. Ring Around The Rosey specific was about the symptoms of The Black Death

Bagpipes can be the most joyful sound in all of history and still sound mournful. In a strange way, it says a lot about the Scots.
If I remember correctly, "Shoots and Ladders" was KoRn's first music video. It's basically the same as the song, except it was shortened by removing most of the opening bagpipes, and going from the end of the 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' section to the final 'Knick Knack Paddy Whack'.

I grew up listening to Korn because i was a metalhead since i was a teen. I wore all the Adidas stuff, i had oldschool Adidas shoes and put spikes all over them, i had dreadlocks too. LOL I found my favorite band by reading the Korn website forums back in 2002. Someone recommended In Flames and i was blown away with them.

“Mr. Rogers” off their second album Life Is Peachy is pretty cool. It’s about the kids show Mr. Rogers Neighborhood from way back.
Falling away from me is a must do if you're doing Korn. Also blind is fucking killer. It's the song that made Korn's career in the 90s and they only got bigger and better from there.

The nursery rhyme "This old man" was said to be about the English and their poor treatment of the Irish. It has roots to the potato famine which reduced the irish population by 25% in 1845-1849. Basically the English kept the best lands for themselves and left the Irish destitute. Many of the Irish people who lost their land became nomadic living in caravans (i.e. rolling homes) and would be beaten on the streets by the British hence paddywhack as Paddy is slang for the Irish. Then as the blight struck and the famine grew the English ruling class would let the Irish families starve yet still give a dog a bone. On a personal note, those haunting bagpipe sounds played at every funeral the Scotch/Irish side of my family ever threw. They lead into this song so well and always make me think of loss, remorse, and the haunting history of my heritage.

This is by far KoRn's greatest album ever and a top 10 in my personal list of albums. I bought it in 1994 and was lucky to get Jonathan, Munky, Head, and Fieldy to autograph the album cover in person in '95 at a signing a day before the first time I saw them live.

Yeah, there's alot of feeling in his songs, I love korn....my wife did too...sadly she passed away, but I feel I am with her when I listen to korn, her fav was coming undone....mine is twisted transistor...check them out...alot of metal out there you haven't heard....\,,/.....\,,/....metal for life!
