Didn't know you were a sailor before learning windsurfing, me too. It's an odd transition as some skills tranlate well and some seem to mess you up. Glad you saw the GP!
I struggle to sail these days because of a back issue. Yes you're right, some skills do translate well but there is much more to it than I initially thought. I thought I would pick it up easy but not so. I've sailed all sorts of high performance boats but this is a completely different thing. The SailGP was great, if you get the chance to go I highly recommend it.
@@dela1968 Completely different thing is right! I find I can call the wind really well compared to guys I sail with, but have actually felt a bit held back by the boat instinct to ease the sail in gusts when it should be more of a body reaction. Finally had one day (after 3 years!) last year where I was keeping up with the good guys. Lots to go though. SailGP has come through town a couple times, always cool even if often light in Chicago. I got to work for them back when it was the AC45s and even those were hoot. Hope the back clears up, I 've really found daily stretching to make work and fun doable.
@@kristianmartincic3011 It's funny you mention easing the sail, that is my natural instinct to. My coach is always telling me off for it. I am only now getting my head around moving my body around to counteract the changes in wind pressure.
@@dela1968 Haha, so glad it's not just me. Just so used to have a line in my hand or on a winch to keep the boat balanced, it's quite the feeling when you realize you can just kick the board into going faster. My big goal for next year is to hit 25kts, have asked a lot of WSers and it seems like I need to bear off more and sheet in more. Almost every day there's wind I seem to hover in the 21kt range so far.
@@kristianmartincic3011 My top speed so far is 16 knots. Next step 20. My feeling is the conditions have to be perfect for the higher speeds. My fastest speed on a sail boat is 24 knots, I'm a long way from that though.
What a view!!! Love it!
Yes the best thing about the event was the view. I've seen three America's cups live and by far this is the closest I have been to the action.
That's cool i had no idea they played the TV commentary in the stands.
Yes the broadcast is live so it's on the screen with the commentary. There is a slight delay though but you have to expect that.
