The forcible removal of First Nations children from their families was part of the policy of Assimilation, which was based on the misguided assumption that the lives of First Nations people would be improved if they became part of white society. Aside from the trauma of being taken away from their families, land and stripped of their culture other atrocities occurred in these religious institutions such as violent punishments and sexual abuse. This was still happening in the 1970s. These atrocities happened to Native Indians in Canada and more than likely other Aboriginal people from other countries especially if they were part of the Commonwealth. This is our nations shame. The kids were stolen as recently as 1968. There was so many systemic similarities to the Indigenous North Americans and now the Indigenous Palestinians. The People of this Earth have always been forced to live in harmony and developed relationships with Nature that we stay numb to at our own peril.
