Honestly the game itself isn't the issue it's the player base. VRChat isn't about progression it's about socialization and adding an in-game economy isn't going to fix that. The mirror dwellers are still going to sit in front of those damn mirrors. The 11 year olds are still going to run around screaming and calling you racial slurs while bragging about their sexual prowess with your mother. The horny teenagers are going to be horny. The desperate incels...are going to be horny and bitter about it. I had a blast in VRC just this last weekend. Why? It was all about who I found myself playing along side. WE made it interesting and fun.

Damn wtf that comment was so perfectly written, kinda wish I said that in my video now ahahha
But yeah I totally agree, vrchat is a social platform, perhaps there's other ways to entice those darn mirror dwellers out of their hypnotic stance 😂

@@jonathankelley5334I used to go on there for that reason and I haven't been on in a couple years now. I found that sometimes you gotta treat real life like a video game at first, in order to break through the veil of social anxiety and see life without fear in your heart. Yeah it's real life, real people but the only thing you gain in VR Chat is anonymity to a certain extent and I found it sad once I started making friends; I wasn't branching out and talking to people where I lived.
Like Jesus said, you gotta love your neighbors and your enemies. What I learned in my time in VR Chat and on the internet is that all people act differently online due to a lack of fear of being humiliated for their actions; that being said, true colors show, all of them.
But it doesn't mean that you can't make a difference or impact the trolls in a positive way. They want you to be angry, or maybe they just don't understand how to act politely, or they have a lack of empathy due to some trauma, but they'll never tell you why they act this way. All of them are damaged in one way or another and I believe it is our job to help those around us. So whoever reads this, remember that what Jesus meant by turning the other cheek was that you must teach your enemy forgiveness by being forgiving, and love by loving.
Cheesy, but it puts things into perspective for me at least. When I realized that, I started living a life outside, and I've met some really cool people even just by buying things off facebook marketplace. I met a beekeeper that way, and even got to help him with his hives on my day off! You can't do that in VR Chat! And is it still awkward for me to meet people in real life? Absolutely, but it's 100% worth it and it's not as awkward as it used to be for me.
Now I know my faith in Christ might throw you off since there are a lot of christians that are hypocrites. But really I'm serious, when I pray to God I know He's helping me meet some really nice people and get over my fears because I know He's walking with me every step of the way. Corny preachy comment I know, blagh!!! But my fear is gone :)

I recently revisited VRChat to interview people as part of a social experiment project that I’m working on for college.
I’ve recorded nearly 10 hours of footage, and at least 6 hours of said footage has been people either harassing me for approaching them to start a conversation or instantly blocking me “because I sound white” (yes, multiple people have said that)
For a social game, it’s so weird how 90% of the people in this game hate when people try talking to them. That’s like going to a concert and everyone gets upset and throws a riot when the band starts playing music on the stage.

I do think part of being not boring has to do with the amount of time you spend on VRChat. Even very fun things become boring nor not as exciting as they were originally. When I found myself becoming unexcited to play for a period of time, I took a 3 week break where I decided to play other games I had, and came back feeling fresh and excited. I think it's very healthy to experience this, and highlights the importance of having a balance in games. Even I as a VRChatter most of the time likes to play other games here and there.

I think over saturation is a big thing in many aspects of life, including gaming. People get bored because they just sit in front of their screen 24/7 and constantly play games and look for new games. Taking a break and just finding another way to spend your time is probably the best advice for really anything

your biggest mistake is thinking VRChat is a game. When it's actually a creative platform with games in it. You're supposed to use it as a creative canvas. This argument is like, "ugh.. youtube isn't fun anymore because i can't progress in this game.... I watch videos all day and everything feels the same." Without ever thinking about making your own content.

I've thought about this question a lot. I think there's no obvious *single* answer, but definitely part of it is the following: The player base is extremely segmented as a result of years of allowing the game to be 13+ when it has no business being that way. To expand; the game has no business being anything other than 18+. Not only do adults not want to play with little kids, but vice versa, mostly anyway. The game is about socializing, VR"CHAT", but no actual adult wants to socialize with a child, so you're splitting the player base automatically and creating a minefield that adults have to step through simply to interact with a new person. Could this person be a minor? Do you want to run the risk of interacting with one when you have no intention of that? Not really, no. Also - I don't need to actively raise this point, but I will, anyone who has played VRChat knows that it's simply not an environment for younger people, even IF it's heavily moderated and policed. You know exactly what I mean if you've ever played it.
As a result of the game's segmentation - people now exclude themselves from public worlds, and congregate in private/friend+/friends, whatever. It's simply not worth the risk, or the waste of time, to peruse around in Public worlds. I started playing this game in Jan 2018, and I can tell you back then all I wanted to do was public world hop. It was intoxicating exploring new worlds, meeting cool people, simply exploring a cultural phenomenon. I couldn't get enough of it. But that feeling is lost, much like your video premise states, for most people. This game desperately needs to put itself back into that position of being full of wonder and excitement, because as of right now it's essentially a virtual playground for 1 population (kids) and a private meet up app for the rest (adults or PC VR players, typically). There needs to be common ground for the public player base again to meet and interact, or it becomes a closed loop of continuously decaying fun. But you cannot find that common ground when the public worlds are 90% young kids.
I took a long break from playing, and came back, and took another break, and sometimes I'll play, but it's simply never going to live up to the early days. And that's a shame, because you could easily re-generate that environment again of chaotic fun.
And that's ultimately what I think is missing from this game - Players play a game until their model making algorithm in their mind runs out of ideas or potential new routes to pursue. When you feel like you've had every interaction you could ever have on a game, you start to become bored. It's completely natural, but with VRchat, the boredom comes from poorly optimized social interaction structure, and that's not necessarily a players fault.
I could go on about this topic forever probably, because it's something I've thought about a lot, but thanks for making the video and talking about the topic. This game has limitless potential and it's squandered in the name of increasing the active player #s at all costs, and that's a shame, because I ultimately think it is to the detriment of the experience.

      @KiKidle 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I completely agree with you. I first started around late 2017 early 2018 and it was a blast then. Everything even the people seemed more approachable then. Now things seem more segregated and about impossible to get into any private worlds etc because of being stuck in public with the younger crowd and not being able to meet any new people to get into a more age appropriate world. It still has it's moments but I'm not meeting random people staying up late as hell having fun nearly as much as I used to.

I began VRChat just last December after purchasing the Quest 2. I can say that from my experience, Its harder to enjoy VRChat when their is no friend group or friend to play it with. It gets quit lonely after a while but Ive also heard and seen some dangerous things that go on throughout the platform such as the "Dark Side of VRChat" You tend to start seeing ERP, Online Daters that could be a 14 year old girl with a 20 year old man, the drinking groups, etc. Mirrior dwellers are the main thing that you see in my opinion. I am basically a mirrior dweller without my friend group LOL. But honestly, overall the game dies after a while once you begin playing. You just need to find new experience to keep the fun going.

I have almost nearly 3000 hours in VRChat as of December 1st - 2023 and i still absolutely love the game. I enjoy exploring the worlds and seeing all the creations. I love meeting new people and generally hang out in public worlds half the time for the somewhat chaotic and crazy nature of it, while the other half i will spend in a nice ASMR world of rain and thunder to help me calm down or relax after a day at work.
I don't see it not "being as fun" or worrying so much about your "rank" as most folks can easily tell when someones there to be a nuisance or to chill and chat.
The biggest issue i see happening to people getting "bored" is mainly due to the fact they aren't willing to even try anymore. Yeah you will meet negative people, trolls, assholes etc. but if you let it get to you, of course you'll have a bad time. Stop worrying about what other people are doing and focus on you and make it what you want.

  • @Zanktus
    @Zanktus ปีที่แล้ว +15

I think your perspective and expectations of VRChat might be a bit off. Not that any ideas you mentioned are bad, but what you want is a metaverse, something like oldschool "Second Life" but in VRChat. Thing is VRChat is really only ever that - a chat in VR. Sure you can play games in there, but all it ever be is just a social hangout place. I never went online and thought even for a second that I need to "rank up" or collect badges and the like, that is simply not the driving point of the app to begin with.
I wouldn't mind either of your ideas as said, but again I don't really believe it needs any of this. I simply believe you get bored because you project a game onto the app, which it never will be and thus you ran out of things to chase. If you maybe take a step back, take a break and embrace it for what it is, then I believe you'll get a different kind of enjoyment out of the app. I clocked in over 1k hours and truly I am bored as well with VRChat, but I know it is more a me issue since I am getting more and more overwhelmed with the amount of kids running and screaming around, and probably the community in general, it really changed for the worse over the years. It's still a great place to hang out with friends and basically just chill. I would love to play a "VR GTA" as you phrased it, but that isn't VRChat.

With this game it made it easier to just talk to people because I knew I can just leave the conversation or leave the world and go back to my comfort zone. The premise of this video is unfortunately very flawed. It starts off stating that VRChat is a game, and therefor, is comparable to other games. VRChat is not exactly a game at all, it's a social platform. The intended "gameplay" is to meet up with people, socialize, or even just roam around, explore what others have built. I came into this video thinking this would be about stuff you should try out in VRChat to make it more interesting, like finding certain groups or worlds.
Also, if you want to compare the progression of a game to an MMO of sorts (I consider GTA Online an action MMO), I'd recommend picking one of the more popular MMORPGs instead, like World of Warcraft, Runescape or Final Fantasy 14. In GTA V, there isn't much progression besides the story, and in GTA Online, most progression is mostly just in-game money to make. In the more popular MMORPGs, a money reward is often not that interesting, it is certain items or titles that people strive for.

Personally for me i liked how simple it was it used to be like you would hop in a world. When your bored and you would explore around and most of the time i would find like another guy or group of guys n girls and they were mainly all adults. Just vibing i would usually go on with my rift. And would occasionally have a drink be a little buzzed. And id find a group of other people who were buzzed. Now its like u hop on and u see a bunch of little kids all wanting to start drama, or like a random ass 28 year old with a kid. Alot of weird ass pedophilia shit. Or just creepy ass adults who u talk to for 30 mins and suddenly they want to be creepy and want to erp with you or want to be in a relationship. As a person whos married and just wants to
Hop on when im bored af its just a bit weird. I eventually got fbt and would dance but. Most people want to sit at a mirror and tbh im not judging but most of em use voicemod or add effects and gain to there voice to make it sound deeper then what it really is

That's so true I didn't think of that, the rank hierarchy sucks in vrchat, it's like the elites and the peasants. Some Trusted users are rude to literally anyone else with a lower rank,
Hopefully they do something about that and yes I loved the good old days too, it felt more real and fun and authentic,
I'm sure it'll be back, if not then I'll bring it back,

the reasoning in vrchat is kinda off. you're treating the game for something that it isnt. in othe rgames, of course the goal is progression and eventually finishing the game, but VRchat is more like social media of the virtual world. its like saying youtube, twitter or reddit arent fun because they do not feature any games. they dont exist to solve a goal, they exist to connect people. the "goal" if you really are looking for one is to have fun with the community, to interact and just have fun

I think the main issue is people not finding the right group, maybe its just not the socializing game for them, your supposed to pick what lobby you play, theirs plenty of games to pick from, many people choose the lobbies or games that consists of the same and possibly boring people or group. I think the most entertaining way of playing vrchat ofc in my opinion is make friends, and once you have your group find games that isn't just mirror dwelling or connect with those friends maybe even through a mirror and get to know eachother. The main reason I played vrchat was an escape and the maion escape was the friends I made and the ones I connected with wethger through a mirror or through playing a horror game on their or some random fun game. I think its all about who you surround yourself with. bc if you sit in a lobby like black catr and except something to happen without making an effort to meet people or actually go to instances that are actual games and not just asocial lobby, your most likely gonna be bored.

honestly i agree with some of these points but don’t think they would ever actually get implemented into vrchat as vrchat isn’t meant to be game it’s meant to be a social experience you’re meant to talk to people if you look at gta its just a bunch of random people running around there isn’t much socialising with vrchat it’s the opposite it’s in the name vr “chat”

There are worlds in VRchat that have virtual currency you earn, but that's about it. You can only have such features if someone created a world with such stuff. From what I know about the game, it's more about socializing, creativity, creating stuff for the community, and expressing yourself. I understand the concept, it's enough for me. I enjoy meeting people and doing group activities from groups. There's always something you can do as VRchat has a lot more to offer than what you think.
    Roleplaying
    Gaming
    Chill
    Group activities
    Community events
    Live percomences like DJs
    Conventions
All things I found in VRchat

  • @LondonLock

I mean its a player content driven social hub more than a game the more gamey systems across the whole thing would be bad. I think the big thing would be an SDK improvement to let player data be saved on worlds as that would allow more ambitious design. Like the afterdark arcade is one of in my opinion the most fun maps on the game. Reminds me alot of Gmod tower. With more things to do with coins you get in the map or hell perhaps different worlds with different minigames you'd have in that alone a gameplay loop that feeds back into a social hub. The map already has custom hud elements. With that you could have achivements and shit
(i'm well aware there are work arounds live save codes and shit but especially in VR those just are not practical)

If that's what you want Toastette then may I recommend a separate rank that grows with rewards tied only to that progression and it based on how often you speak on the mic or type messages if you're a mute. Too often people stay quiet when I approach them in public. This would also give more purpose to singers or people who like to make public speeches as an art form.

This is a copy paste from a comment I made in a different but same subject this is the second time I’ve done this copy and paste comment begins here-I remember finding VRChat back in summer of 2020 people getting interviewed about there life, people show off there avatars and exploring new and amazing worlds. Almost everyday having a blast now all I hear is drama or people leaving or taking a brake. I join back in early March of 2021 I had a blast made some friends saw many come and go it’s October 1,2023 now a days it hard to even join people or find something to do. I get on most people are on red or orange I requested off some of the people on orange and sometimes get a invite. I miss the old day I wasn’t really there at that time but I remember how things were then and how things are now.

So I think VRChat can be fun as a social game alone. Though I think this idea would make it a lot more interesting than it already is! I would probably play more than just on weekends if this was the case as it would give me a reason to visit without needing planned events or my usual group of friends around me :)

Its boring because the community has been doing the same schtick over and over since vrchat start, nothing wrong with that but doing the same thing everything will get you bored, not just in vrchat but everywhere too
But for me vrchat is still fun because the reason i "play" vrchat is just to visit this world that people made, some are amazing, some are empty, some is weird, and many of them is not finish yet lol
But i like it, just visiting each of this world and see what the creator try to make, some so elaborate they even put lore behind it, some is made to pay respect for their cat who already gone
I just self roleplaying myself as somekind of world dimension traveler (complete with astronout getup) and everytime i visit the world i just imagine and narrate myself in my own imagination story, it kinda fun

I think this is unfair. he unfriended those people because they were annoying after a while. Personally, i think that when a player gets up in rank, their rank status should STAY and NEVER be dropped. I mean really, it's not like a user will never friend anyone again. as a 5 yr player, you dont know actual progression from back in the day. maybe badges and purple matter to a questie with limited memory on the system or uploads, but actual endgame is rare avatar hunting and animation hunting, since it gives you street cred and also cred with the 'gangs' in vrchat. i may have to make a CORRECT video on everything thats happened.
the correct answer to why vrchat worked and why alternatives didn't: vrchat is a 'theme park' with low bar of entry and ease of access to the casual player. other games want you to 'create' like neos/resonite, overte, etc and people dont want all that in their face. vrchat just gives you world and avatar buttons and sets you out into the wild to explore. without any of the old creators though who left, and questies never being able to create using unity, the people left behind are left to stagnate in a world that now never changes, and becomes increasingly smaller with successive updates no one asked for.
besides that, your answer to fixing vrchat is to basically mark zuckerberg it. turn it into actual jobs and places and currencies you can get or go and do. look how metaverse did that and it went down the tubes cause it was a joke. even now, this new currency for creations in vrchat isnt taking off either. ontop of that, people are gonna be actually ANGRY with you if you wanna put quests into what they refer to as a 'social game'. how many times on forums have users literally gotten up over arms on the topic of whether or not its a real game or a chat game, let alone freaking out if they heard its got quests.

Personally i dont think its progression. Yes theres a lot of mirror dwellers, but, you also forgot to mention something. Ive made a lot of friends during my almost 8k hours, however, theres the mirror dwellers as you mentioned but everyone i meet and "friend" either dont visit me anymore OR theyre too busy being in private worlds or being "orange/red status, sure you can request an invite and i have tried that but i dont get one when requested, the excuses i hear is "sorry i didnt see your notif (which is a bug sometimes i know) or "Sry i was busy watching this with so and so" or "sorry i was sleeping in vr" blah blah blah anyways. The progression thing is questionable because already if you're green rank or lower most people ignore you or straight up block you for no reason, i cant tell you how many times that happened to me before finally hitting "Trusted". Another fun one is ranks stick with same ranks, trusted usually only hang out with other trusted, etc theres a term for that but forgot. Also i dont go to public worlds as often anymore because theres no decency anymore, anytime i go pub theres always someone shaking their asses or full on sexual things, i dont want to see that shit everywhere i go lol the only worlds i go where i can have a fun experience anymore is the MMD worlds, all the people that go there are very chill and just want to use the MMD floor, however, that limits a lot of things because those worlds are for MMD dances so they usually dont have much to do with anything else.

Intermixing minors with adults is the worst part of the game. I can't go into any public world without a bunch of kids screaming or so called adults just standing infront of mirrors trying to get drunk. When I first played this game in 2018 it was so much different... the maps were bigger, mirrors weren't prevalent, and it a lot easier to meet people. VRchats performance on the Quest 2 was also terrible with constant crashes. I really wish they would separate the worlds into adults / minors.

VRchat is not a game its a platform used to connect to other players. There are games in vrchat. You already can go to virtual clubs nsfw or sfw clubs. There are tons of things to do but the problem that I see is most people are incapable of actually finding the people to do those things with outside of listen to music, dance and ofc get drunk. If we want to speak about VRChat as if it isn't just a social platform though and focus on a more gamified approach I highly suggest learning blender and Unity and making your own avatars and worlds. This not only keeps you interested and brings you into a different space but also gives you real world skills you can take to other things such as video game development. The funny thing is though because VRChat as a game is more of a sandbox MMO if you go to actual sandbox game spaces you will hear the same things echoed. Look at sea of thieves for example, in the early days. It had almost nothing to do but it wasn't about getting the best gear and the ever increasing loot. It was about the adventures you would have and the people you would meet.

    @GrimmSmile 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

This is not the answer lol. World creator here, progression only really works depending on the creator of the world and if you haven't touched Udon or Usharp (which is coding for worlds and allows creators to make more complex functions within said world), then you won't realize how difficult it actually is to create anything meaningful within worlds. (At least in terms of gameplay functionality/progression)
You have to know pretty complex coding and even if you were able to implement progression, you can't simply leave the world and expect anything to save. Which is why most worlds with saving functions use long strings of text that you need to copy paste to a text file.
However, this should all change once VRC releases the update for persistent worlds, at least when it comes to saving anything. They are also in the works of making Udon 2 which will have Usharp coding added into Udon itself, which should make it somewhat easier to make complex things without needing too much knowledge for coding.
The only thing I can see that would make VRC more fun is when more people start trying to make story-driven/RPG-style worlds when the new updates for Udon 2/persistent worlds releases. This will at the very least open a gateway of experiences for people. Technically we do already have experiences like this but they are pretty hard to find if you don't know what to search for or where to look.
Even with all that said though, some people just simply aren't interested in going through these experiences or playing games for that matter and just want to hangout with friends, which unfortunately can easily lead to some people getting bored when there isn't much to talk about it.
