Just ordered me the sunjoe model due to all of the great TH-cam reviews. My lawn will appreciate this. Lord knows it needs some serious help. Good vid 👍
Thank you very much. I really enjoy doing the review vids, I try to make them as informational as I can while making them somewhat enjoyable to watch. I am currently doing an additional review of more dethatchers for 2021. I hope that it will be as informative as the others that I have done in the past. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Fiskars StaySharp Max Reel Mower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend This is what all push mowers should strive for. It was easy to push. It cut the lawn. The blades are sharp, very sharp. The one minus that everyone should be aware of is you need to be very careful taking the cutting unit out of the box. There’s a plastic guard so you don’t cut fingers as you take the main unit out of the box but it’s not taped down. As I took the unit out, I ended cutting a piece of my shirt. The plastic guard moved and my shirt touched one of the blades.
I have a Greenworks for 2 to 3 yrs and its been working find. This fall I used it and one of the screws broke in the handle and now I need a new one. So based on this video, I am going to get the Sun Joe. Thanks for the video it was very helpful.
Abdul, sorry to hear that your GW broke. I am glad that I was able to help out in anyway that I could. Best of luck with your new Sun Joe!! You are most welcome, glad that it helped! Thank you for the comment, I hope to hear from you in the future!
I think you guys messed up the height on that Greenworks one? as you set it to "low", the wheels went down, NOT up. You even see the chassis go up. That's why it didn't do anything when you ran it on your lawn. I have this unit and it works very well (if you use it correctly).
Bertminator, Thank you for your insight. I will refer you to page 15 of the Greenworks user manual. The settings are EXACTLY as they show in the manual, since you have one this should be easy to reference. Here's the hyperlink if you no longer refer to the paper manual: www.manualslib.com/manual/763082/Greenworks-27022.html?page=15#manual. I am glad to hear that you have had great results with your Greenworks. That is great. I always do my research and I am a freak about making sure that all settings are where they should be to ensure an equal and fair comparison. Unfortunately the Greenworks did not perform in my lawn and others when each time it was checked and re-checked before each app and used correctly. Thanks for your comment, always love the involved interactions with those that are passionate about lawn care. Thank you and best wishes in your lawn this year.
Just wanted to say, I picked up the 13 AMP Sunjoe at Menards on sale yesterday because of this review. It worked awesome!! Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
Very nice, Menards, must mean you live in the Midwest. I have been to them in MN. Great stores!! You are most welcome! I hope that it helped you along your way. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Thank you for posting this video. Ive had issues getting my front grass to turn green and grow. I just learned about dethatching and all models you selected were models I was looking at. I chose the sunjoe based off of your video. Thank you for posting this.
I am glad that I was able to help you on your way of making a choice. I hope that it will help you in the lawn and that you have a great 2022 season. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
You are most welcome!! I hope that it helped in making a decision. I apologize for the delayed response. I have been buried with work and family health issues. I hope that the Sun Joe does a fantastic job for you.
We bought a house about 4 years ago. I have never had a problem getting a lawn to look nice until now, I didn't even know what these were let alone what they were used for until I had to do some research. Great information and demo. Thank you!!
Brandi, you are most welcome. I hope that the information was helpful. Best of luck to you in your lawn!! Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future!
Glad that I could help you in choosing one that will meet your needs, I think you will really enjoy the Sun Joe. Thank you for the kind words and the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
John, yes I totally agree. I have had several comments to that end as well. I did several lawns with both male and female users, different grass height of cuts, to be able to show how well each machine performs. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future!!
I really have been looking for a good review on dethatchers. I'm glad you did the point system, but there was a lot of fluff, also I didn't quite understand the music playing while you were talking and we couldn't tell what you were saying. Other than that pretty good.
David, thank you for the comment. I apologize for the music overlaid over my speaking. What happened is that I had used some music that I was told that it could be used in the YT vids without the threat of having it copyrighted. This video has been up for sometime and the initial YT checks stated that everything was fine, no problems. Then about 2 months ago, I get a copyright strike and they give a solution to "replace" the song. But they fail to tell you that when you do, it lays over the top of EVERYTHING, voice tracks as well. Now it's like that and they will not let you revert it back. So again I apologize for that, and the fluff, both in the video and this lengthy response. LOL I am glad that I was able to help in your journey. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Thanks Lucas. I am glad that I was able to help you in your decision. I think that you will love the Sun Joe!! Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Robert, thank you for your comment. In reference to your question the answer is that; yes the greenworks was set to the deepest setting that it could adjust to, just like the other machines. I can completely understand why that might be a question, but I did double and triple check the settings of each unit prior to use. Thank you for your comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I just came across this video and I'm glad I did. Congrats on doing a thorough job in testing and comparing. One criticism I would offer is confirming to the viewer that the depth settings had not changed from location to location but all in all a great video. I am surprised this doesn't have more likes you deserve it. I have a lot of work to do to my lawn and cleaning up areas that have been killed off due to dead grass build up. Thank you for giving me more info to better inform my purchase and potentially avoid frustration with this phase of my restoration.
Thank you very much I greatly appreciate the compliment!! And in regards to the "criticism" I can take that type of thoughtful and very well intentioned correction, ALL DAY LONG!! I did set all the machines to the lowest setting in the video, but I did fail to mention that during the test runs!! I will definitely do so in the future. Restoring a lawn can be a long and frustrating experience! But it sounds like you have the fortitude to stick with it!! Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
@@TheHighlanderLawn Hey, I also want to thank you for this comparison video. I just bought the SunJoe and wanted to ask you a question. I have never dethatched my 2-year-old lawn, and I have had problems with thinning lawn and poor lawn growth. My question is, what is the rule of thumb to set the height of the dethatcher? Would it cause damage to the lawn if I set the height too low?
Jill, I am in need of begging you to forgive me for not responding until now. I am usually pretty prompt on the responses to comments. But for some reason I missed yours and I am very sorry for my failure to do so. Congrats on getting a dethatching unit. In regards to height of the unit, SunJoe states that the "dethatcher cylinder" should not be used at the -10MM setting. but I have used it every time on this setting at my own risk of course. I think that they key to being able to use it at the lowest setting is that a person should cut their lawn to the lowest point that they are comfortable with. This will keep the unit from bogging down from long healthy grass, and having it wrapping around the cylinder and thereby causing problems with the unit. If you have some thick debris in the lawn I would even suggest applying the scarifier to extra thick turf. I hope this helps and again I am truly sorry for the delay in my response. Thank you.
I have used the Greenworks Dethatcher machine and it did a great job; it needs to be held back slightly rather than letting it pull you along. Did you have the height set to the correct level for your tests ?
Jel, I am glad to hear that the GW did a great job for you. I did have the height set to the correct levels, and made sure that all the machines were set to the equivalent height/depth, so as to make the comparison as completely level as possible. Thank you for the comment and feedback. I hope to hear from you in the future.
@@TheHighlanderLawn Perhaps the GW needed to be adjusted to a lower setting? Just seems that it was quite the disparity between the 3. I've seen other reviews on the GW, where it pulled up a pretty respectable amount of thatch.
Jim, thank you for the comment. I am sorry that I did not respond as promptly to your comment. My settings in TH-cam show new comments, but do not show additional comments added to the initial response. So I apologize for that. The settings are set exactly as the user manual shows, I check and re-check because I have in previous years made plenty of mistakes before. Yes several have stated that they have experienced great results, and they are very passionate in their defense of the GW unit. If they are having awesome results, then I couldn't be happier for them, and I would back their results. However I have tested the GW twice and the results in my lawn and the others involved were not what I was hoping for, and funny enough each of the folks using the unit asked is thing set right, so it added a 3rd check on the setting. Thank you for the comment. I am again sorry for the delay. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Thanks for the info. We are new to detaching & your videos are so helpful in us planning our project come this fall! Plus, you have a great sense of humor and found you funny! Great work, thanks for sharing.
Debbie, Thank you for the kind words!! I am glad that you found them helpful and I hope that your project this fall goes very well. As far as the sense of humor.....Well my kids may disagree with you. LOL They may say I am funny looking, but hey, that's how it goes!! LOL. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Vince you are most welcome. I hope that you get great results no matter which unit you choose from. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I have the WORX myself and found it very easy to use AND effective. A neighbour across the street has the SunJoe and we tried a fun switch last Spring. The bottom line... we both felt the machines performed equally, but that WORX was easier to use. I think it's the open front of the WORX unit that lets it move more freely.... it doesn't jam with thatch and just rides over it. The only thing to remember, as you point out, is the SunJoe doubles as a Scarifier.
Adrian, the WORX was definitely a very effective machine. In fact after the review was posted, I was speaking with the gentleman that stated that the WORX was his machine of choice. The subject of the open front came up and we did come to the conclusion, much like yourself, that the open front may allow the machine to not "bind" up if there was a significant amount of debris, A closed front like the other machines may, if the debris level is high, allow it to build up and bog down the machine and cause damage to it. Which with as light and kind of FIsher Price toy like these machines can feel like, I wouldn't be surprised that they could do so and overheat the electric engine rapidly. So I think that WORX may be on to something there, although it still freaks me out that the tines are exposed while it's operating. I guess it's the "dad" in me that thinks "oh no, what if my kids were out in the yard, and it got them" or "dang, did I just catch the neighbor's dog in the tines!!!" I know super gruesome, and way OVERTHINKING it but weird accidents happen all the time. LOL. The factor that obviously tips the scale in such a close race, is of course the additional option of the scarifier, which if a person is doing an overseeding project, is an absolute bonus to the SJ. Thank you for your comments and insight. I hope to hear from you in the future.
THANK YOU!!! Yeah, I'm going to go with the SunJoe. My yard is SAD and I'm sick of looking at it. it needs some serious overseeding and that scarifier will really come in handy. The other comparison that I looked at also agreed. I'll be checking out more of your videos. THANKS AGAIN!
Pedro, I am glad that this comparison helped. I did just release a video of a updated SJ model and compared it to the SJ in this video. I am also giving away a never used before 801e. The rules for the giveaway are located in the video, with the Old Lion vs Young Lion title card in my video list. So if you want to enter to have a chance to win this model. Please take a look at the video and enter. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future!
I hope that the video was helpful in your decision making. The SunJoe is a great product I hope that you enjoy it. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
That's awesome!! I am glad that you were able to find the product that works great for you! Thank you for the comment I hope to hear from you in the future.
I also have the green works. I think it costed me 80.00 and pulled up a lot of dead grass. I live in MN where we have Kentucky blue. Thanks for the great video.
Susan, I am very glad to hear that the Greenworks did a great job for you. I hope that you have many more years of continued success with it. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Math is hard... ACTUAL final score is SJ - 17 WX - 11 GW - 8. Error came at 4th review with an accumulative score of SJ - 12 WX - 6 GW - 6. Outside of that, great review! Much appreciated.
LOL!!! Sometimes it can be. I noticed it too, but only after it had posted!! Thank you for pointing it out!! It's been up for almost 2 years and you are the first to have noticed!! LOL Thank you for the comment.
It is amazing that there is that much dead debris choking out all the things that our lawns need to thrive. Now your grass will bounce back with resilience and will be better than ever. Thanks for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Thanks. I know that the video was pretty lengthy but it did have 3 different products being reviewed, and included 4 different lawns and 6 people's thoughts (as you referred to). I think it is important to hear not just my opinion but if I can, get others involved in the process!
I hope that this video helped you in buying a Sun Joe. I really enjoy making the comparison videos. Best of luck to you in the lawn this year. I hope to hear from you in the future.
That was a GREAT review with so many people giving their opinions! I came about this because I absolutely LOVE Worx products and have 14 of their products and am reviewing the dethatcher. Having various people test them all helps. I am tall and (weird to say) strong, so I think I would get the Worx since I have so much of their product and love them all. Thank you for this excellent comparison of three dethatchers!
Sheri, thank you for the kind comment. I am glad that you found it helpful. I do think that getting others opinions, than my own, can help give insight to the everyday lawn enthusiasts, or those who just like to maintain it to a certain level. I think that the WORX will do you very well, sounds like you could be a rep for them some time in the future!! LOL. You are most welcome. Glad that it helped. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
@@TheHighlanderLawn I subscribed to your channel. :) Yeah, my Worx products are great, so I actually tell them (in chat) to give me a better discount when I order something pricey since I buy thru their website. I live for their leaf blower for everyday use on the patio and to chase deer away. Their snow blower is great too. I SHOULD be a spokesperson for them! My boyfriend says I should get a free product. ha
@@TheHighlanderLawn it absolutely did. I orders them Sun Joe. Side note. My wife is from Sandy and I met her at BYU. 3 of my kids live in Utah now. Beautiful place!
Yes, thankfully I have a large tool assortment. But the new unit is worse, it uses Allen wrench bolt heads, which I can't hardly stand. They are too prone to strip out, then you are screwed. But I did go to a hardware store that I found the right bolt thread pattern but has the hex heads.
Thank you, I greatly appreciate the feedback. I had a great time putting it together and I hope that it helps people in their decision making . I think you will truly be impressed by what the Sun Joe can do. It definitely does a great job and with having the option of the scarifier unit, if you have a ton of debris, it will really clean all of that, so that your lawn can get all the water and nutrients that it needs without the debris choking it out. Thank you for the comments, I hope to hear from you in the future.
I am glad that I was able to help in some fashion in your journey. I think you will love the Sun Joe it is a great unit. I have enjoyed mine and have been very pleased with the results. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
The Sun Joe is a great unit. I definitely enjoy mine. I am putting out another Comparison video this year bringing in a new competitor. I actually used to live in Washington State myself for 8 years. I hope you enjoy your Sun Joe! Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
@@tundrawhisperer4821 Other than an inch wider, an extra amp in the motor, and an adjustable handle for height. I have really did not seen any MAJOR differences in production/performance. So it really boils down to the $$$ difference between the two. I have featured the newer AJ805e in some of my latest comparison videos. And will be doing a new one for Spring 2023. Thank you for the comment. WA state is beautiful. Lived there for 8 years (SE WA). Sorry for the delayed response. Just got done having full blown shoulder surgery on my right shoulder so I haven't been as on top of my responses. I hope to hear from you in the future.
last year took way too much effort to rake pine needles and thatch out of my small yard (1500 sq ft on a slope). I am 70 years old, and I think I am going to buy a dethatcher instead of using a bow rake this year. It was so easy when I was 50. IMO the Worx may have a learning curve because the last guy had it working great. I could be wrong.
I think that either the Sun Joe or the Worx are a great investment. I am 48 and will tell you, I will never pick up another rake to pull the dead debris out of my lawn again after being able to use these machines. Super lightweight and easy to manage, and they do an awesome job. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Abbas, Thank you. I hope that I was able to help in your decision making. I will be putting out a sequel to this video some time in the next few weeks. It was interesting to see the results of this new comparison that brings in a different contender than the Greenworks. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Hi. Watched your first video and got your reply. After that video I got my new Sun Joe, and I want to say that I love it. Easy to put together, easy to adjust height, easy to start and easy to push. I’m 75 years old and love yard work and got mounds of thatch out of my yard. My 100 ft cord restricts me from going further into my back yard. My yard is 16 acres, not all grass but too far for any thatcher except power ones. I’m debating on getting an additional 100 ft cord with the same weight. I’m wondering if it will damage the motor with the extra length extension cord. Thanks again for your video.👍👍
Gary, I apologize for the delayed response. There has been a lot going on with work/fam etc. I am excited to hear about your results with the Sun Joe. I have not used anything past 125 ft of cord, 100 + 25 12 gauge cord. I had no issues doing so. But if you get to 200 feet well then it may cause an issue. But I have not used it at that length. I would imagine that you could give it a go and if it is performing differently.....stop usage prior to any harm to the motor. You are most welcome for the video. I am always glad to hear that it was helpful. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Ted, thank you for the reply. I apologize for not getting back in touch with you earlier, but we had a death in the family right around the time you placed your comment, and I have not been back on social media for awhile. To date I am not aware of their being a scarifier attachment for the GW. It has the ability to swap out the tined cylinder for a new one if it breaks, etc. But no scarifier attachment so far. Thanks again for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Jeremy thank you for the comment. No did not change any heights to accommodate my lawn, I placed ALL units at the lowest setting that they would go. The way that they performed was mainly the design and power of the motor.
I bought my SunJoe three years ago. I was skeptical of how well it would do, because of the price. I now know that, just because it's cheap, does not mean it's not a beast.
Spot on!! The Sun Joe really does a great job, and it is definitely worth every penny spent on it. Especially when you compare it to a per cost per rental. I am glad that it works great for you. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
@@TheHighlanderLawn Absolutely! I was scared of using the scarifier attachment, so I only used the rake attachment. I agree, that the bag attachment is a total waste of time, so I stopped using it. I just did as you did, and use my mower w/ bag attachment to suck up the tailings of the SunJoe. We (In Milwaukee) just had a full day of rain, and a day of sunshine, so the ground is right. I just put on the scarifier, and I'm going for it. I think it will remove the thatch I didn't get and score the soil enough for overseeding. I only worked horizontal and perpendicular, but thanks for showing the diagonal part. That is one way to ensure you get it all out and give the grass seen a chance to really get in there and take.
Great video! Just one correction. When you're adjusting the Greenworks height at the beginning of the video (about 2:50 mark) you have it backwards. The machine was already set on its lowest setting and you were raising it up. You can physically see it going up with each twist of the knob on the wheel if you look close. This confused me too when I first used it but the height is actually reflected by the setting on the bottom of the wheel that you can read upright, rather than the setting at the top of the wheel that is upside down. I learned this the hard way and want to spare you viewers from the same fate! Cheers
I recently purchased the sunjoe and "found" a secret setting.. if you pull on the height adjustment knob you can get it to raise the wheels to where the chassis sits on the ground. I did this with the "scarifier" drum and it worked well for me.
I personally bought the Worx and I couldn't be happier trick with the Worx put a small piece of wood at the back to keep the flap open at all times I find it to Worx so much better(haha see what I did there lol)
Jake, the Worx performed very well. In fact the gentleman at the end of the video, really liked it and he asked to borrow it to do a second round. That small piece of wood in the back is definitely a cool adaptation to the machine that definitely Worx!! (LOL I see you sir!!)
Thanks for the video. My lawn is a disaster and I found these tools. I was torn between the Worx because I use their other tools and love them, and the Sun Joe. I'm thinking a dethatching lap, then scarifying lap, then seed and water. Maybe my seed will take better this year
Jason. you are most welcome! Both are great tools and should serve you well. I too have done the same dethatching then scarifying laps. It will beat your turf up pretty good, but with some good watering and some good fert, your grass is very resilient and will rebound quickly, even more so with a good overseeding, I would suggest throwing down some top dressing (either soil or peat moss, etc.) and your seed to soil contact will be better, and it will help keep the birds from "snacking" on the seed that you put down (I speak from providing them plenty to feed off of LOL!!) Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Hmm.. the Worx one seems to have the tines very close together sobthat might be causing damage when turning. - I am planning on getting a unit with scarification knives and tines like SJ has. If I plan on overseeding the lawn would you advise me to use scaring knives first or tines! Or maybe scar first then do a quick pass with tines? Scaring knives are marketed for airing out the lawn here locally in EU...
Yes the Worx times are very close together!! Good eye!! 👍🏻👍🏻 if you are going to overseed I would suggest using the scarifier and if the lawn can take it, run it twice, but use it going two different directions, this will beat the lawn up a little, but also open up the lawn to give as much area for seed to soil contact to give the best success to have your newly laid seed to germinate. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future!!
@@TheHighlanderLawn No thank you for your answer! :-) By 2 directions would you suggest once up and once down on the same stripe or regular up/down side by side stripe and then 90deg to it again? - I have narrow lawn so 90deg to length could be pretty tricky without to much damage i assume.
If you can go one direction and then find a direction that is crossing that path, even at 45 degrees or less, just as long as it can somehow not be the same direction, it will give you more chances to get the seed into contact with the soil and then follow up with a top dressing with some peat moss so that it will keep the seed from being eaten by the birds. Best of luck in your lawn.
@@TheHighlanderLawn Thank you. I will try that. I really appreciate you answering me and taking the effort to respond to our questions in the comments. Best of luck.😊
Do these all have the same amp. ? were the height settings the same. ? If not this can be biased. Please do this again with the current models with the same amp, same height adjustment, same width. Love to see the difference. all company increasing amperage. thank you.
The amperages on these did vary somewhat but by no more than 1 additional amp. That can make a difference but not a drastic one. In comparison of the height differences. These were the most popular and reviewed units at the time of production of the video. If one could go lower then that was to that unit's advantage over it's competitors. It's more of a granny smith apples to honeycrisp apple's type of comparison. But I am working on a new unit review that will most likely be out and ready come spring of next year just as the dethatching season is strongest. Thank you for your comments. I greatly appreciate it.
I use Sunjoe corded lawn mowers at home and cabin and these things stomp on the battery mowers. I routinely cut 1" branches with the Sunjoe 13amp mowers and never a problem. Very durable. Next purchase is this dethatcher. Thanks for the video.
Jim, Wow that is amazing, this is the first time that I have heard about the SJ mowers being able to handle branches that thick. I do agree that they are very durable. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
To be honest, the conversation never reached about what choice of fertilizer he uses. But I will the next time I speak with him. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
If it has a scarifier. It must be the GW 40v option. The reviewed GW does not have that option. I hope that it works well for you. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I am convinced that the SunJoe is the one for me. It’s not that much more to buy it compared to renting a machine. I was impressed on the amount of grass was removed from the last guys green yard. Oh I live in Washington and I had a lawn service do everything but thatch it and it never green. But I see that my yellow will be gone by thatching. Thanks for your demonstration.
You are most welcome. I was surprised as well with the amount of debris that was removed from the last gentlemen’s home. I lived in WA as well for 7 years. Tri-Cities. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Sorry for the delayed reply! These last couple of weeks have been pretty crazy! No I have not but I have been asked to include that unit in a future video. Thank you for the response!! I think you might be seeing that unit in a future video.
I am glad to hear that you had great results with your unit. That is refreshing to hear. Thank you for your comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I've just been letting my mower mulch and return the grass, but maybe that is the worse thing I could do, adding more dead grass to what needs to be removed by dethatching. We have about as much weeds as we do grass, and we are renting, so not much going into the yard. But this was a great lesson and something to seriously think about.
Thank you, I hope that you enjoyed it. In regards to mulching. I am a proponent of it because it returns some nutrients to the soil as it breaks down. Now I live in a higher altitude area (about 4300 ft above sea level.) Now because of that the grass clippings do not breakdown as quickly as they would in lower elevations. So I usually only mulch in the hotter times of the year 85+ degrees. Due to the heat being able to easily accelerate the decomposition of the grass in such high altitude. If you are in a lower elevation it should allow for the grass to decompose fairly rapidly. But if the blades of grass are super long when it is cut (like cutting hay in a field LOL) then you would find that longer blades take longer to decompose. I have a great mulching mower and it does very well at chewing up the blades, but when the temps are dropping below 80 degrees is definitely when I stop mulching and bag it up. Because yes if they do not decompose it can potentially add a layer of dead debris that can choke out your lawn. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Great review video. I've purchased the SunJoe 15" electric and love it. What the heck is your friend Mike is using to greenup his grass? It looks awesome!
Orlando, thank you very much! It’s a great unit and it should serve you well! As far as I know he is just using the basic big box store / Scott’s type products. And those can do well, and his results speak to that!! Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I recently bought the Worx model as I have had good experiences with some of their other products. Were you using the bag for Worx or any of the others? Seems like you weren't which is good for seeing what thatch was loosened, but still leaving it behind (requiring a follow up with a mover to vacuum).
Paul, I truly believe that the WORX dethatcher can do I great job just like it's closest competitor in the video. I was not using the bag in the video, nor have i ever used the bag since my initial trial of the Sun Joe. Unless you are doing a very minimal (and I mean very minimal debris removal) then the bag is pretty much rendered useless because it cannot hold anything more than the amount of debris that is pulled after about 10 feet. So since then, I have never used it. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Great information, but I am somewhat hearing impaired and with the background music being that loud it is often impossible to understand what you are saying.
Kim, thank you for comment and the view on the video. I am sorry that I was inconsiderate in regard to those that may have a hard time hearing over the background music. I will strive to do better in the future. I hope to hear from you in the future.
@@TheHighlanderLawn I don't think you were inconsiderate, just it isn't something those with good hearing haven't experienced. Thank you for understanding.
What position should the sunjoe be in to work at its best and pull out maximum dead grass? Please note that I hydroseeded spring of last year and again over seeded last fall since the lawn was bald and patchy. I still have bald patches here and there. I plan to detatch/scarify this fall and overseed again to make my lawn look turf like. I have turf type tall fescue now and have never done detaching before ever. On a side note what brand of seeds/mix do you recommend? I live in Minnesota.
If you are looking to do an overseed and some repair seeding of the bald spots. I would suggest the Sun Joe with the scarifier cylinder set to -10mm. This will cause the little trenches to be form as the blade is more aggressive and will create the little "trenches" that will allow for better seed to soil contact. I know that when I have done some overseeding that I have had the birds going after and eating the seed. So I used some peat moss to use as a top dressing and also hold the seed to the soil and it holds moisture better. It does dry out quickly but if you are doing an overseed, the seed you put down and the soil should be kept damp until the seed germinates. As far as seed providers there are a few that I would recommend. Barenbrug has some great seed, GCI Turf has great seed and mixes as well , and finally Super Seed Store has some great specialty seed and blends as well. I love Minnesota I lived there from '93-'95 . Gorgeous place and the COLDEST temps I have ever experienced. (-40 air temp and -120 with the wind chill) I keep telling my wife about that and she doesn't believe me!! LOL Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
@@TheHighlanderLawn So the -10mm would be for scarifying which I’ll follow. What should be the ideal height for raking/dethatching dead grass please? Since I have TTTF right now I am not sure what minimum height should I mow the lawn before I even begin to dethatch and then scarify? Right now I regularly mow the lawn at 3.5 inches. Yes, I do plan to put peat moss as top dresser (did it last year as well), my only issue is I do not have the spreader and its such a pain to spread it by hand. HD has it for rent but not in all locations. I put Jonathan Green BB ultra last year and leaning towards the same this year as well. In the areas it has come up, it’s really good except the patchy areas where I need to probably spread more. I have 1250 sq ft in the front yard and Barenbrug, GCI and Seed Super Store sell them in huge bags. I doubt if I really need that much. Would have loved if GCI would have come up in 10 - 15 lbs bags since I would love to as I have seen Pete’s videos not to mention the reviews as well but alas :(. Yes, MN is cold, there were snow flurries even today :). Looking forward for some super sun in the coming days ahead.
I will tell you that out the gate, if you are looking to dethatch/scarify any type of cool season grass. I would STRONGLY recommend getting your height of cut down as short as you can. I will tell you that I made that mistake once, notice the "ONCE".LOL The reason I say this is that the shorter the grass the better the machine will perform. I did not cut down a guys lawn that i am working on this year and I bound up the grass in the machine and it literally overheated and shutdown. It took about 10-15 mins to cool off, but I don't like to push a machine to that point. So for your sake "Learn from a dummy!!" LOLOL. I can understand that GCI , Barenbrug etc do sell big bags, Super Seed does do smaller # bags I believe I bought a 5 pounder of Bewtiched KBG last year. If that won't work for you. I have to admit I have had some decent results with just the Home Depot/Lowes seed (aka Scotts, etc) Thank you for the reply. I hope that this helps.
@@TheHighlanderLawn That helps a lot. I will go down to the lowest on the mower. I’ve always believed seeding/overseeding is kinda tricky just because you rake the seeds/soil once put down and that’ll again scatter the seeds here and there which creates the bald patches especially TTTF where rhizomes don’t spread unlike KBG if I am right. I may go overboard this time to make sure it fills in just right. Your videos and knowledge helps novices like me you aren’t a dummy by any means. I’ll touch base with you in case I am stuck anywhere down the line which will probably be end of Aug. Please keep the videos coming. I appreciate all the help. Thanks again!!!
@@worldpeace5853 I will be doing a series starting within the next couple of weeks where we will be doing a complete rehab of a neighbors lawn. It will be entitled: “Help me fix my UGLY lawn 2021” and we will go step by step of the process!! So if you would like you can follow along and pick out what will work for you!!
Anthony yes about a quarter inch to a half inch of thatch is good and normal for the lawn. In regards to the Greenworks, well in my mind it didn’t perform very well plus it doesn’t come with different cylinders (scarifier) to prep for an over seed project. But if your choice is the Greenworks, then by all means, it should service your needs. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I had the Greenworks, was good but needed as well the scarifier so I Just bought he SJ. For the Greeworks, the portion is always the number towards the grass. It's indicated on the handlebar. I'm sure you had it at the highest, which is Position 3, which is for Transport only. Position 2 or 1 would have been better.
Charles, thank you for your comment. I think that you will enjoy the versatility of the SJ. In regards to the GW, according to the manual ( page 15 on the model with which I used and I made sure I was thorough in my research), it states that the Position 1 is for Transport and that Position II is at approx. 1/8" (3mm) and Position 3 is at approx. 3/8" (10mm). To make sure that the comparison was as equal in opportunity to all machines, I made sure that all were set to the similar setting of "height"/depth, and that they all had equal areas to work in. The outcome however was what was visible in the video, and the same settings were set at all locations that were used. Thank you so much for your insight and comments. I hope that you enjoy your new machine and I hope to hear from you in the future.
Great video! Bottom line all three will give you a better looking lawn than before. I have the GW for two years, an my lawn never looked better. I am sure the other two would do the same. Big edge with the Sunjoe is that Scarifer attachment for seeding.
Thank you very much. Yes all the machines can do from a good to a great job in helping to get the dead debris out of your lawn. I am glad to hear that you have found great success with the Greenworks. I love getting feedback from those who have actually used the product. Yes it is a fact that the Sun Joe does edge out with the additional option of the scarifier. Sun Joe just came out with an updated model for this year of the dethatcher/Scarifier. The unit just arrived today and I will be doing a head to head review between the old and new models. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future!
I have the Greenworks as well. I got it last spring and love it. I did my first dethatching in the 11 years I have had my house. I pulled up a dozen bags worth of grass. That was on the highest, not deepest setting. I wish I could post a picture here to show you. That being said, great video!! I like real world situations. Helps me be informed. 👍
Are u sure u lowered the green works unit down to the lowest level? It's kinda hard to believe it didn't pull anything up at all. Because I used it and it filled up bags upon bags of material that came outta my yard. Unless I simply had so much of it that it had to pull up something, which is certainly possible.
Patrick, thank you for the comment. In answer to your question is absolutely "Yes". I double and triple checked it. I am glad that your GW produced the results in your yard. Unfortunately that was not the case in my yard. I wish that the results would have been different, but I simply apply the product and show the results. Thank you for the comment.
I got the worx last year and it does a good job of dethatching. But I must admit that I envy the Sun Joe because of the scarifier attachment. If I could do it again I would go with the Sun Joe.
The Worx is a great machine, and as with the last gentleman in the video said, he liked it better and it did do a very comparable job to the Sun Joe. But you are spot on with the SJ having the additional option of having the scarifier cylinder is definitely nice, especially for overseeding prep!! Don't second guess yourself. Use that Worx until it gives up the ghost, or "donate" it and get the SJ!! LOL Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Robbie, No I do not have St. Augustine grass, and have absolutely no personal experience with such. I have heard on both sides of the argument both people who have used it and loved their results and those that are of the dissenting opinion. So I would say go for it. with caution!! LOL Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Robert, no such thing as a silly question. Here is a link to the proper cord on Amazon, if you choose to purchase it from the site. Southwire 2589 100-ft 12/3 SJTW Outdoor, Heavy Duty 3 Prong Power, Water Resistant Vinyl Jacket, for Commercial Use and Major Appliances Extension Cord, 100 ft, Yellow amzn.to/3dHBEqz I hope that helps. Thank you
i have the smaller sunjoe ( i have a small lawn) and i found it worked great ! havent tried others but for the prices i was very pleasantly surprised !
Peter, I am glad to hear the the Sun Joe, no matter the size, worked well for you. They are great machines for homeowners. Thamk you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
There is usually always a supply issue, between May and August. I did see that Amazon has them available, but not directly through there warehouse system, it appears that some independent merchants have them for sale through Amazon, but I will say they are asking some inflated pricing i.e. $225.(Supply & Demand) I will say that last years’ pricing got completely out of hand units were listing for $350 plus. And while I love the product, sometimes patience can pay off while waiting for the supply to catch up and then the prices become more reasonable. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Yes I did place all units to the “lowest” setting on all machines, so that they are all being compared equally. Not all go as low as each other, but I think that is to their detriment. I think that you will really see great results with the Sun Joe. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I just got the sunjoe, waiting for it to come in. I have not dethatched in forever, atleast 10+ years probably 15+. I have a lot of thatch... do you think it is better to start with the detatcher, then the scarifier after? or just go straight to the scarifier. i am going to overseed afterwards.
Rob, thank you for your comment. Congrats on getting the SJ I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how effective it is. Your experience will be much like the gentleman, at the end of the video, that had went a long time since "dethatching his lawn" in fact after the video was posted I let him use the machine and he did go over it twice, one in a East>West, and the other at a North>South to get a thorough dethatching. If it has been awhile, and you are planning on doing an overseed, I would do a pass with the tined cylinder first, then collect the debris with either a rotary mower or rake it (not my favorite) , etc. Then apply the scarifier to whichever opposite direction you deem necessary. I say this because, this is what we did with my neighbor across the street's lawn, (it was in absolutely terrible shape and was only 3 years old) but we did a full on renovation. I tined dethatched it, then scarified it, and then I took a reel mower and scalped it down, by this time the neighbor was freaking out because it really looked bad. and I thought his wife was going to pass out!! LOL We then also had the lawn mechanically aerated, picked up the plugs, and then seeded, added starter fert, and then placed about 3 cubic yards of topsoil on top of the seed to get good seed to soil contact. We did have some seed consumed by birds as they love to eat it, so in the areas that were hit hardest we did a second spot seeding with a seed, starter fert, peat moss mix and that did the trick. The entire renovation is in my "Help me fix my ugly yard 2020" video series. Other than the overseeding, we did apply weed control, had a run in with grubs and sod web worms, and I did an adjustment to his sprinkler system and dialed in his watering (Which in my opinion, is 60% of most major issues) It was alot of work, but now his yard is green, thick and lush. I apologize for the lengthy response, but I just love helping folks get their yards to where they want them. Thank you so much for the comment and I hope to hear from you in the future!!
@@TheHighlanderLawn Thank you so much for the detailed response, love it! Every year i feel like it will be the year for the luscious green thick lawn and it never happens, and i usually miss the time to do everything. this year i want to just do it. i feel a lot of the issues is i have a LOT of thatch/debris, i really need to get this completely removed, even if it completely tears up my lawn. hehe.. i do plan on overseeding, so i will definitely take your advice and to the dethatch first, clean up, then do the scarifier after, then overseed. I live in NJ, when do you think is the best time to do this? can i dethatch as soon as i get it just to clean out the debris, i can't imagine that would ever be a bad thing. then maybe wait to do the scarifier until ready to overseed/ fertilize. thanks! so excited to get the SJ.
Rob, the best time to do this if you would like to see some results would be within the next two weeks, as the ground temps should be approaching 55 F degrees. This is when the lawn should start waking up and seeds begin to germinate. But if you have it completed by the end of April into the middle of May you should still be in great shape to have your lawn where you want it by end of July/first of August. Depending of the variety of grass seed you choose to use.(Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Rye, Tall Type Fescue, etc. ALL Cool Season grasses and there are numerous sub types of these that are naturally prone to do well in certain conditions, and some that are genetically modified to do so.) I am a KBG person myself, it does take longer to germinate (3-6 weeks) but I like the resiliency of it. But there is no "right type" to put down, although I would find out what you have and plant similar, no need to have a "salad bowl" of multiple types. The other thing to remember when overseeding is to use a starter fertilizer (can pick up at any HD or Lowes, Etc.) and put a top dressing (topsoil, or peat moss) down as well as making sure that you are keeping the seed and soil as damp and moist as needed (at least 1-1.5 inches in depth minimum) this can require a ton of "babysitting" the lawn with watering during this time. 2-3 times a day for the first couple of weeks. But do not "flood irrigate" or you can wash the seed away or drown it to the point to where it will not think that it is time to germinate. I hope that you see some great results this year on your lawn!!
@@TheHighlanderLawn I got my sunjoe and used it today. wow, i did my front lawn at the highest setting dethatch, then went 1 lower, and i got a TON of debris out. all dead. after 3 passes (different directions) lawn still looks like has tons of dead debris, but it is much much better, i can see the soil now. I do plan on donig hte scarifier then overseeding, so i figure the scarifier will get even more debris out so i don't feel necessary to keep doin gthe dethatch at this point. When i do the scarifier and oversee, (probably wait until next weekend), then overseed (tall fescue i believe). What type of fertilizer do you think? we do get a lot of weeds, dandies, etc. I read somewhere there was this highly concentrated spray that does fertilizer and weed control even for new seed.... do you have any recommendations? spreader with pellets or a liquid spray?. I also have a bag of milorganite, when do you think i should use that? thanks...
Rob, wow man, you got after it!! Great job! As long as you haven’t or will not be putting down anything with a pre-emergent (weed control barrier, that prevents seed germination) overseeding should go well. I do suggest anything with N-P-K (Number sequence on the bag Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium)with a 15 or higher in the Nitrogen column. I have generally used a “starter” Fert when seeding. You can get these at any HD, Lowe’s etc. Milorganite is a great organic fertilizer, but is slow release, and will not burn the lawn. Because of this I like to throw Milo down in the summer time heat, as synthetic fert can sometimes further stress the lawn when combined with heat stress. In regard to the “All in one” products they are not bad. But sometimes combining fert and weed killer may not be what you are looking for as this could inhibit germination. I do not use combo all in ones very often. I do like to use a product called Q4 herbicide. It is a powerhouse when it comes to weed control. BUT a few disclaimers. It is pretty expensive initially a gallon is currently selling for about $155. Now the good news, a gallon will usually last me 2-2.5 full seasons (years) so no more than $80/year. I put it down in first to mid June and then again in September with a 4 gallon backpack sprayer. Each time. It DOES NOT do well in temps above 85F and will stress the lawn if not given a day or two prior to hitting that temp. If it were me I would put down your fert and seed, with knowing you will take care of the weeds AFTER the seedlings are established and will be resilient to a herbicide being applied. The problem is with current weed seeds in your lawn from last year and any finding their way this spring, the starter fert will push both grass and weeds together. I did this in my neighbors yard and I warned them they would have to grow together, then when the baby grass was strong enough, we would wipe out the weeds. 2 weeks later you couldn’t tell that any weeds had been plentiful prior. Whew!! That was a long explanation!! But if you follow the Help me fix my ugly lawn. You’ll see some of the strides we made and what you can expect, in your journey. Best of luck!!
Gary, all of the units were set to the "lowest" possible setting for each of the units respectively. Sun Joe does state that the lowest should not be used with the dethatcher tines and only with the scarifier cylinder, but in 4 years of using it, I have not had an issue. I will tell you that for best results and to avoid damage and overworking the motor, it is always best to cut the grass to as short as you dare. This will keep the blades of grass from wrapping around the cylinder and collecting to the point of overheating the unit. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Thank you very much!! I am glad that was able to provide you with some information to assist in whichever machine that you chose to purchase!! Thank you for your comment and I hope to hear from you in the future!!
James, with the fact that both the Greenworks and WORX do not have that option for comparison, I simply chose to mention that the Sun Joe had it. This does make the Sun Joe stand out far and above the other two. By this Saturday I will be publishing a new comparison video that does include a scarifier option for 2 of the 3 units. I do a comparison with this option and weigh in on it. The results were very interesting. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Yes at 3:07 I showed how to set the height exactly as it shown in the manual. You can reference page 15 of the manual if you need further clarification. Thank you for the comment.
@@TheHighlanderLawn Hi-I don’t mean to harrass you, but I made this mistake too. Not sure what’s going on with the instructions, but it seems to be the opposite of what they say! When I put the GW on a level surface and measure height with a tape measure, I find that when I can read “Low” (when that word is closest to the ground and right side up, the device itself is closest to the ground, and moves up from there as I turn the dial. It might be worth trying yourself and see. It certainly takes out more thatch when “Low” is closest to the ground. Keep up the good work!
@@TheHighlanderLawn From page 15 of the manual: When setting "I" is at the bottom...dethatcher depth is approx 1mm above the ground When setting "II" the dethatcher is 3mm. When setting "III" is at the bottom...it is 10 mm.
Yea I've seen several other videos from borderline professionals using the Greenworks pulling a TON of thatch up. Makes me think it was not setup correctly.
That is awesome that the Greenworks worked great for you!! I totally have no preference, if it does the job, keep rolling with it, absolutely. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future!
I have watched their videos as well and yes they did pull up dead debris very well. Just to be VERY clear, ALL units were set to the lowest settings in the portion of the video discussing the height settings, and they stayed at those settings through the ENTIRE video. I can completely understand the thought that it wasn't set properly, I even triple checked it when it was not pulling up anywhere near the same amount of debris, thinking that I had done something incorrectly as well. I appreciate the comment and love that you would be thorough enough to at least bring it to question. Thank you for the comment, they are always welcome when trying to produce positive constructive discourse!!
Jeff, thank you. I enjoyed making the video and showing the comparison and effects of the machines. I am glad that you enjoyed it. Thank you for your comment. I hope to hear from you in the future!
MIL TICKET, while I would agree that on larger yards these units would not be ideal, but I would put the limit of square footage more around 8000 sq ft!! But this is just a personal opinion not the rule. Thanks for your insight. Greatly appreciated!!
@@TheHighlanderLawn I think that's pushing it lol unless you have help. I have the greenworks and it works pretty good & trying to sell it this spring. I mean I had piles of dead grass, so it did it's job. It ate up a Saturday & Sunday (atleast 20+ hrs by myself- includes clean up raking etc) & that dang extension cord. Never again for this guy lol.
I have done the same. And I had to triple check to make sure that I was not doing anything incorrectly. But all units were set to the lowest setting that they are able to go and stayed at that setting throughout the entire filming and at each home demo. The setting occurred in the video where I set each unit to the lowest setting, and there they remained. It was a head scratcher to me as to why as well. All that I know is that the GW barely pulled any debris out. Thank you for your comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Looked to me like the GreenWorks was on the high setting, which would explain why nothing came up. I own one, and can say that it pulls up plenty of dead grass when I use it.
Again if you reference page 15 of the manual, you will see that the instruction on the video match exactly to the pictorial instructions found on said page. I am glad that the Greenworks worked well for you, that is awesome!!
You are very welcome!! I am glad that it helped you to be able to make a choice on these machines. I believe that you will thoroughly enjoy the Sun Joe. I hoped the sound bites helped to break up what was a fairly long video. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Thank you. I had a great time making it. Sun Joe just came out with an updated model that should be arriving at my home soon and I will be doing a Old Lion vs Young Lion comparison. I didn't show them in the video, but the machines do come with very inconsequential bags, that to be honest, should just be burned the second you pull them out of the box!! They don't do any good in my opinion. But you will absolutely need to collect and remove the debris. This can be done a few different ways. Either use a leaf blower and get all the debris in one pile and then either dispose of it or turn it to mulch in a garden bed, etc. Probably the most effective way to collect the debris, is to use a rotary mower and bag the dead debris and then do with it as you see fit. I hope that all goes well in your efforts to make you lawn top notch this season. Thank you for the comment and I hope to hear from you in the future.
I can do a review on that. It may be a little later in the year. Mama only likes me spending so much money on machines and trimmers and all the fertilizer, weed and grub control for the year. But I will definitely include it in a review. Thank you for the suggestion. Thanks for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
@@TheHighlanderLawn aaaa I can’t wait. Amazon sells them and what are you opinion on battery operated lawn equipment. I just got an ad on it. Best thing is that it’s cordless. Thank you for commenting! Happy mama, don’t end up in a comma. Lol
Angela I am sorry to hear that your SJ crapped out on you. Did it overheat? Did you happen to not use the recommended 12 gauge extension cord? Have you tried to reach out to SJ customer service if you haven't owned the unit for very long, maybe they would work with you in some fashion? Or the venue that you purchased it through? Maybe they could work out a return? I am not sure, but it would at least be worth a try. I am giving one away, the rules can be found in my video that I made this spring comparing the OLD vs NEW Sun Joe Dethatcher/Scarifier. There are just a couple rules to qualify to enter. I wish you the best of luck in your lawn this year. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
The most common fail among corded lawn equipment like mowers, edgers, detachers, It's usually a $3 bridge rectifier and easy to replace. Symptom of a failed bridge rectifier is tripping the breaker when you try to turn it on. Make sure if you do this repair on your own to open it and find the bridge rectifier first so you can buy a matching one on Amazon or somewhere online. frugalrepair.com/2017/04/how-to-fix-electric-lawnmower-rectifier-trips-circuit-breaker-short-circuit-task-force/
So glad you got other lawns as well - on lawns never done to get a good view of what to expect since I have never had one ... I need one badly so I am hoping by the end of this video I am sold on one of them - hell for the low price, if it didn't work I have a lawn pattern maker !!! - 🥳
LOL....yes they do stripe very well!!! Love that observation!! And I spent the money on the units, people can bet that I am going to use them on my own yard, but I knew that the proof in the pudding would be taking it to a lawn that had not had the units applied to. I am hearing that many retail online locations (Amazon, Lowe's etc) are all currently out of stock on the Sun Joe units. I haven't heard anything on the other two units featured. I did put out a video this year of a comparison video of the NEW Sun Joe 805e model and compared it to the one used in this video. I would check that out, as I am doing a giveaway of an 801e (model in this video) and will be doing the giveaway when we hit 2K subscribers. So there is still time to go in, find out the details and have a chance to get one. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
First let me state that I have not used this on any warm season lawns/grass types. So I am only speaking from what I have heard. Because most warm season grasses grow, by way of stolons (above ground root system), versus rhizomes (cool season below ground root system) I have heard that these machines can cause havoc to the lawns, BUT.....I have seen vids of folks doing so with warm season turf, and it does tear it up, but most grass types are VERY resilient and come back stronger than before. So I would say go for it!! Or if you are a little hesitant still maybe watch a review of one with warm season turf. Then you can make the more confident choice. I apologize that I don't have the warm season grass experience needed to speak to that, but I hope it helped.
It is actually not my fence, it is the neighbor's who live behind me. It is a gigantic mess, and a topic that i just end up shaking my head at all the time. The neighbors are supposed to retain their property on their side. There is about a 2-2.5 foot difference between my yard and theirs. Until 2020 there was nothing but a dirt mound that was working it's way into my backyard. They have dogs and want to let them out, which is not a problem but they have to retain that land or it will push a fence over eventually. So they slopped that concrete wall together, it has no footings very little rebar and was done top to bottom in two separate pours about 12 hours apart, and those posts for the fence are in the pour. I don't know if it is going to stay standing, it is already cracking. I do have plans to put the rest of the white vinyl fence but want to see if it's going to stay standing. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Melanie, I used 2 12 gauge 50 foot extension cords. I had lent my 100 ft 12 gauge to a neighbor, who come to think of it, still has not returned it!! LOL I thank you for the reminder, those cords aren't cheap!! Thank you for the comment! I hope to hear from you in the future!
Melanie 2 - 100 ft 12 gauge cords should not cause you any issues. If you went to 3 100 ft cords you might have an issue because you now be going out the length of a football field!! 🤣😎
I owned a sunjoe for 3 years. Loved it for those years. I only have about 200 sq yards. Yesterday my sunjoe started to smoke and it died. Maybe used it 5 times and my grass was just freshly cut. So I'm kind of wonder if you are sponsored by sunjoe. Because value for the money I wouldn't buy one again.
Hey Big Moose, Sorry to hear that your Sun Joe died on you. My original one finally gave up the ghost, but we are talking after scarifying 30 different lawns, and probably the same number of times in my lawn. I did document it's "death" in my Help me fix my Ugly Lawn pt 3 video for this year. But to speak on any sponsorship from Sun Joe.....I wish...LOL No sponsorships on any of the dethatchers that I have reviewed. They are purchased with my own money, but this does give me the ability to say whatever I think about the products for sure. If I do receive a product, I am transparent about it and state it not only in the video, but the video is tagged as such by YT. I do believe that the Sun Joe is worth the money, and maybe you just happened to get one that failed WAY TOO SOON. I had that happen with a unit that I am putting together for a review in 2023. @@TheHighlanderLawn it was help for sure considering I had no knowledge prior to your video.I inherited my grandparents house and the yard hasn’t been up kept in a long time.it’s needs a good de thatching now that I’ve gotten it under control.looks like the sun Joe is the good choice.
VERY interesting, when I bought the WORX I hated it. I am 5'7 tall. I inverted the handle so the loop is on the bottom it's like a different machine. Works fantastic... pun intended.
I will have to try flipping the handle so that it might fit a shorter person (like myself). That is great insight. Thank you for sharing and for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I am aware that the Sun Joe has a battery powered unit. I have not used it, but what I am hearing is that it will run for 20 mins and takes 30 mins on average to recharge, 40 mins maximum. The battery option is definitely nice to be cord free!! But having to start and stop so much can be a huge pain, and extend out the time to complete the job. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
The Sun Joe featured in this video is the AJ801e, they now have the upgraded version AJ805e. The only real difference is that it is an inch wider and has a more powerful amped motor. As far as results I could not tell a difference between the two. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Fernando, I must admit that I don't have any experience with warm season grasstypes. I mainly deal with cool season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Rye, Tall Fescue, etc. When you ask about what to start with, I guess that I would need to know where you live at what your goals are for your lawn. (For example, are you looking to cut it short with a reel mower or something else?) I do know that warm season grass types do not do so well with a dethatching machine, due to their stolon root systems (the root system grows and spreads above ground, basically). But cool season types have rhizomes which work beneath the surface and do well with dethatching. I would be very interested to know what your plans are and I would love to help from there. Thank you for the comment and I hope to hear from you in the future.
Yes it is a great little unit!!
@@TheHighlanderLawn watch back the video, the machine clearly went up

Agreed, I think the video put the "desired" height at the top instead of the bottom.
Worx for the win!!! 🙌🏾
Yes sir, Mike loved the Worx!! So much so that much I gifted it to him!! 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for posting this video. I’m in the process of purchasing a dethatcher
and you help me with the decision of choosing the Sun Joe.
I didnt know these existed until just recently. Great demonstrations! Really helped me make up my mind about one. Gonna look for a sun joe!
Glad that I could help you in choosing one that will meet your needs, I think you will really enjoy the Sun Joe. Thank you for the kind words and the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I would say that last lawn demo from 22:47 on was a brilliant illustration of the machines’ efficiency. Thanks.
I hope to hear from you in the future.
nice vid man, i was already thinking about the sun joe before I watched this but you definitely helped make my decision
Thanks Lucas. I am glad that I was able to help you in your decision. I think that you will love the Sun Joe!! Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I’m wondering in the greenworks simply wasn’t adjusted as deeply as the others?
@@TheHighlanderLawn You set it higher, not lower. Watch the wheels go down on your video...you'll see I'm right.
Bertminator, man I love the passion in your response. But like I said before, check page 15 of the users manual. They are correct. Thanks man.

I definitely be picking up a Sun Joe this week!
Thank you for adding value to this product review. Is there a price comparison out here in TH-cam land?

LOL!!! Sometimes it can be. I noticed it too, but only after it had posted!! Thank you for pointing it out!! It's been up for almost 2 years and you are the first to have noticed!! LOL Thank you for the comment.
I just got my sj yesterday. My wife and I were shocked how much dead grass was out in the yard. It's pretty bad ass
It is amazing that there is that much dead debris choking out all the things that our lawns need to thrive. Now your grass will bounce back with resilience and will be better than ever. Thanks for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Nice comparison video. It’s good to hear what other people thought after using the dethatchers.
Thanks. I know that the video was pretty lengthy but it did have 3 different products being reviewed, and included 4 different lawns and 6 people's thoughts (as you referred to). I think it is important to hear not just my opinion but if I can, get others involved in the process!
Great job, brother. This helped me make my decision to go forward with the sun joe.

That was a GREAT review with so many people giving their opinions! I came about this because I absolutely LOVE Worx products and have 14 of their products and am reviewing the dethatcher. Hardest part about changing the sun joe accessories, finding a 10mm socket.
Never have a 10 mm when you need it, but always do when you don't. Lol
Tell me why I chuckled at this? 🤣

Thank you, I greatly appreciate the feedback. I had a great time putting it together and I hope that it helps people in their decision making . I think you will truly be impressed by what the Sun Joe can do. It definitely does a great job and with having the option of the scarifier unit, if you have a ton of debris, it will really clean all of that, so that your lawn can get all the water and nutrients that it needs without the debris choking it out. last year took way too much effort to rake pine needles and thatch out of my small yard (1500 sq ft on a slope). I am 70 years old, and I think I am going to buy a dethatcher instead of using a bow rake this year. It was so easy when I was 50.

@@TheHighlanderLawn thank you for getting back to me I'll just wait or either try and find one👍
Nice comparison but did you change the height settings on the green works to accommodate for your yard .
Cheers
Thank you!
@@TheHighlanderLawn Does this mean the comparison of the Greenworks was invalid if you didn't know how to adjust the height properly???
I recently purchased the sunjoe and "found" a secret setting.. if you pull on the height adjustment knob you can get it to raise the wheels to where the chassis sits on the ground. I did this with the "scarifier" drum and it worked well for me.

-
I am planning on getting a unit with scarification knives and tines like SJ has.
@@TheHighlanderLawn
No thank you for your answer! :-)
By 2 directions would you suggest once up and once down on the same stripe or regular up/down side by side stripe and then 90deg to it again?
-
I have narrow lawn so 90deg to length could be pretty tricky without to much damage i assume.
@@TheHighlanderLawn
Thank you.
What’s your buddy Mike’s choice fertilizers?
To be honest, the conversation never reached about what choice of fertilizer he uses. But I will the next time I speak with him. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I bought a Greenworks in June 2023. It has a scarifier and a height adjustment lever and a 13 amp motor

Have you looked at the YardMaster GV1314?
Sorry for the delayed reply! These last couple of weeks have been pretty crazy! No I have not but I have been asked to include that unit in a future video. Thank you for the response!! I think you might be seeing that unit in a future video.
I have a Yardworks which is a rebadged Greenworks and it pulls up mountains of thatch. I think all 3 will give excellent results if set correctly.
This was a great video!!
Chirs, Thank you for the kind comment. I hope that it was helpful.
Thanks for the Video. I heard some thatch was good for lawn so would the Greenworks be ideal since it doesn't irritate the lawn so much?
I completely agree..that wheel went down when adjusted, NOT up.
Do u have st Augustine grass?I thought we can't use this on st auggy?
Robbie, No I do not have St. Augustine grass, and have absolutely no personal experience with such. I have heard on both sides of the argument both people who have used it and loved their results and those that are of the dissenting opinion. So I would say go for it. with caution!! LOL Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Well no need for regrets. If the GW works for you then run with it. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
i have the smaller sunjoe ( i have a small lawn) and i found it worked great ! havent tried others but for the prices i was very pleasantly surprised !
Peter, I am glad to hear the the Sun Joe, no matter the size, worked well for you. They are great machines for homeowners. Thamk you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
All these praises on the Sun joe has made it sell out everywhere..Dang
There is usually always a supply issue, between May and August. I did see that Amazon has them available, but not directly through there warehouse system, it appears that some independent merchants have them for sale through Amazon, but I will say they are asking some inflated pricing i.e. $225.(Supply & Demand) I will say that last years’ pricing got completely out of hand units were listing for $350 plus. And while I love the product, sometimes patience can pay off while waiting for the supply to catch up and then the prices become more reasonable. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Are all the machines set at the same height?
Yes sir they are all set at the lowest height setting.
did u used -10 for SJ? i have SJ n it works fine, but i still have to use more ...to really find if it really works for my purpose.
ALL Cool Season grasses and there are numerous sub types of these that are naturally prone to do well in certain conditions, and some that are genetically modified to do so.)
I am a KBG person myself, it does take longer to germinate (3-6 weeks) but I like the resiliency of it.
Why were the height settings and were they lol set the same?
Gary, all of the units were set to the "lowest" possible setting for each of the units respectively. Sun Joe does state that the lowest should not be used with the dethatcher tines and only with the scarifier cylinder, but in 4 years of using it, I have not had an issue. I will tell you that for best results and to avoid damage and overworking the motor, it is always best to cut the grass to as short as you dare. This will keep the blades of grass from wrapping around the cylinder and collecting to the point of overheating the unit. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Fantastic demos. I know which one I should get now. Thanks.
Thank you very much!! I am glad that was able to provide you with some information to assist in whichever machine that you chose to purchase!! Thank you for your comment and I hope to hear from you in the future!!
What about the Scarifier ?
James, with the fact that both the Greenworks and WORX do not have that option for comparison, I simply chose to mention that the Sun Joe had it. This does make the Sun Joe stand out far and above the other two. By this Saturday I will be publishing a new comparison video that does include a scarifier option for 2 of the 3 units. I do a comparison with this option and weigh in on it. The results were very interesting. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
“I don’t know how it work though” of course! 😂
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
At 3:07 you indicate that GW is at the lowest height, but you are actually at the highest setting, I’m pretty sure.
@@TheHighlanderLawn From page 15 of the manual:
When setting "I" is at the bottom...dethatcher depth is approx 1mm above the ground
When setting "II" the dethatcher is 3mm.
When setting "III" is at the bottom...it is 10 mm.
I got the Sunjoe for $50 last year. Worked great for my needs.
They are great machines, congrats on getting it for such a great price!! Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Walmart last July.
We have the Greenworks and it pulls up a lot of thatch for us.
I have always used a gas powered dethatcher and this was an eye opener. Well done on the comparison. I liked the video
Jeff, thank you. I enjoyed making the video and showing the comparison and effects of the machines. I am glad that you enjoyed it. Thank you for your comment. I hope to hear from you in the future!
If you have a bigger yard more than 5000 square feet, I would pass on all 3.
This is weird to me. I've watched several vids and the Greenworks gets a ton of thatch up. What are the settings on each of these?
Thanks, This video helped a lot. Definitely getting a SunJoe. Like all the sound bites also.
You are very welcome!! I am glad that it helped you to be able to make a choice on these machines. I believe that you will thoroughly enjoy the Sun Joe. I hoped the sound bites helped to break up what was a fairly long video. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Thank you, been looking to buy one. Now I know
You are most welcome. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Very good comparison video ; do we need to remove the debris after de thatching
Could you please compare it to the Von Haus brand too? I found this video very informative. Thanks for the review.
Lol
Yes, I don't need to be in the dog house!! Especially when I don't own a dog!! Therefore it would be built ONLY for me!!
My sinjoe worked great the 2 times I used it but then it stopped and I can't find anyone to fix it.

Will these work with all types of grass?
Great Video!
Thank you Danny!
How was the fence built on wall?
I noticed you have more than one extension cord, how many did u use , are they all 12 gauge, are they all 100 FT long. thx
@@TheHighlanderLawn would it be ok to use 2 - 100 ft 12 gauge cords together?
Melanie 2 - 100 ft 12 gauge cords should not cause you any issues. If you went to 3 100 ft cords you might have an issue because you now be going out the length of a football field!! 🤣😎
@@TheHighlanderLawn thx so much!
Absolutely!! Thank you for the comment!! Best of luck to you this season, in meeting your lawn goals!!
It failed at 6 passes, probably about 1800 sq ft. So I can understand your frustration. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
Thanks for the video it has helped me decide which to get.
You are most welcome. I hope that it was helpful. I think that you will be impressed at the results that you will get. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
NIce!! Well I am sure that you will make your Grandparents proud!!
Any insider knowledge when these might have a battery powered alternative?
I am aware that the Sun Joe has a battery powered unit. I have not used it, but what I am hearing is that it will run for 20 mins and takes 30 mins on average to recharge, 40 mins maximum. The battery option is definitely nice to be cord free!! But having to start and stop so much can be a huge pain, and extend out the time to complete the job. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
I didn't know SunJoe had one. Love Sun Joe...I have a pole saw, blower, chain saw, and other SunJoe stuff. Great for me.
The Sun Joe featured in this video is the AJ801e, they now have the upgraded version AJ805e. The only real difference is that it is an inch wider and has a more powerful amped motor. As far as results I could not tell a difference between the two. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
@@TheHighlanderLawn I ordered that one this week. I’ll let you know what I think.
Ever done work on St. Augustine grass? Any details on what option to start with? Just ordered the SunJoe
Like the Sir Thatch-A-Lot song I like thick grass and I cannot lie. :)
Same here!!🤣🤣
