Even though the physics were not great, Driver: Parallel Lines had one of the best stories in video game history. The sad thing is that most people are unaware of its existence.
Yeah. I can remember when people were bowing down and worshipping GTA V when it was first released. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I also liked playing "Mafia: Definitive Edition" and "Saints Row" (2022).
This made me realize Driv3r was way ahead of its time in terms of damage modelling. Splitting vehicles apart with explosions, many detachable panels and debris, and accurate bullet holes? Really impressive. Makes me almost want to try that game out... almost.
Driver SF really pushed the damage limits with licensed vehicles, not taking into account racing simulators like Shift which get away with it more easily. Only game I can think of that had better damage on licensed cars is Wheelman, which was pretty much on par with games like GTA, but only because Pontiac was nearly bankrupt at the time and needed the exposure.
@@DJ_Thanos There are a lot more than street racing games. If they have limited damage it's because the developers choose to make it that way. But track racing games get away with destruction more easily, because it's all portrayed in a legal environment.
One thing I suppose would be worth mentioning is that in Driver 2, If your vehicle get's wrecked at the same time as a pursuit end's, you are able to get out the car (With "You've wrecked your vehicle" being displayed). However, you have to be quick and your vehicle has to be on all 4 rims and going slow enough to not lead to the game over screen when holding "Up+Triangle". I remember doing this and usually, the words "You've wrecked your vehicle" stay on the screen for a few seconds after exiting the car.
We need a new driver game with soft body physics.... ASAP!! I wonder if anyone else had this experience with driver. So as I kid I’d love driving in Miami over the hump bridges at the north end. When getting chase by police one time the police car had rolled on its side, I drove back up to it ready to push it and the moment I hit the police cars sirens my car got thrown up into the air and landed upside down out side the map on the water. I had found a glitch.. and bug. After that that’s all I’d do, try and get a police car on its side, touch the sirens with the corner of my car and bam up in the air and down outside the map. It worked on all 4 city’s and was a really cool way of driving around where you shouldn’t. It blew my 7yr old little mind when I discovered that little glitch.
When I clicked on subscriptions and saw your video I thought "wait but I clicked subscriptions" then I saw it's uploaded by you lol Nice video btw, damage is a strong point in every Driver
Driv3r was a really ambitious project on some aspects. A shame that the studio prioritized quick bucks over the one of a kind quality. Also, what is it with licensed cars can't explode? Is it some kind of marketing nonsense like "people won't by our cars if they think it can explode by repeatedly crashing into other cars or by being shot a 100 times with a machine gun" stuff?
Brands have a lot of conditions for their cars to be shown in a video game. Explosions (or level of damages) are one of the restriction, but also the type of topic you can use (so too much mafia/mob story was not possible)
Driver 3 had the most absurdly impressive damage system I had seen at the time! Heck, it puts modern games to shame, no sweat; my mind was blow the first time I watched a car explode in one of the many cool trailers our friends at Reflections put out. Sucks a lot was simplified in the transition to Parallel Lines, but it's understandable, the city was bigger and it had a day/night cycle going on and there wasn't much more to squeeze out of the PS2.
Yeah, DRIV3R was such an improvement of the formula coming from Driver 2. Sadly, people at the time only looked for onfoot and guns (GTA influence) but DRIV3R did not that right.
@@VortexStory , true that, the biggest problem with Driver 3 was the lack of AI during on foot sections, since enemies can't do much, other than roll, stand and shoot; sucks, cuz I like the controls and the option to play in first person. Game had the driving physics still, but that wasn't what the mainstream gangsta wannabe folk of the time wanted anymore; don't get me wrong though, I like me some early 2000 edge, we could use some of that stuff these days. We could, too, use another Driver or something like it, I wish... Open world games these days might have all the graphics, but I'm yet to play one that has the physics on par with Driver and not something straight out of a flash game.
Very informative video Vortex! I kind of wish that Driver 2 kept the black smoke from the exhaust like Driver 1, though with OpenDriver being in development, I'm sure that will get covered. I find it weird how D:PL has better pronounced grey and black smoke compared to D3, but simplified other areas in the system like removing the windshield shatter particles.
interior damage by hitting & shooting, driving with a flat tyre will make slightly deviate but all tyres punctured will be considerably slower to drive, full damage will make the vehicle not move, engine no fire from accidents by collision damage, engine fire by gunshot, amazing explosions, vehicle fully wrecked with 3 main pieces + props, no game over from full damage in Take a Ride, exit a damaged vehicle to take another vehicle, no vehicle repair at safehouse, only removing felony & claiming health Driv3r is the best because there's Turkey & multl language localizations including russian
I really loved the physics and car damage in driver 3, next to it comes driver San Francisco, wich remindes me of burnout games only with inferior damage.
You forgot one neat detail in Driv3r. The damage by gunshots depends on location. For example: if you shoot the back part of the car (if the engine is not there), it will not receive a lot of damage enough to explode. But if you shoot the engine, it will get a lot of damage. Jeez, this to be a 2004 game is amazing.
People can say whatever they want about Driv3r. They just don't know how it was back in '05, driving around nice with a grenade launcher, seeing car parts fly around, the physics engine was the best for its time. I loved GTA SA as a kid because of the gameplay, but I preferred Driv3r for its driving mechanics and physics. Gunplay sucked but it's always fun to blow up stuff with the tube. :D
The only thing that really pissed me off about Driver was the lack of variation in car performance... I only played the first three games, i don't know if they fixed it in the last one.
Now gta4.... that was just delicious. I could drive around all day in that game. Gta5 on the other hand... like driving a slot car with no weight or feel.
Soo about getting out of ur vehicle in driver 2 while its already on full damage isn't that like a glitch i mean we know always when ur vehicle crashed on full damage its already game cover but i tried that always but on ps1 version tho 10:12

Race Driver: Grid
That's a closed track racing game, they can get away with high damage more easily.
@@No-vq1iv plenty of closed track games have limited damage. Those with damage such as Grid's or NFS ProStreet as so few

3:13 my man isn't knocked out.
I miss attention to detail like this in a game. It really shows the level of effort put into a game to make it authentic.
Modern games puts focus elsewhere, but I certainly miss an urban open-world with good driving mechanics...

Going from DRIV3R to Driver: Parallel Lines is very displeasing in that regard!
Bonus Bonus: in DRIV3R, when you lose the two front wheels the car is "mute", only the sound when you burnout exists, then the car is muted
