The woman they cast to performe as Giselle was such a stellar selection. She has such a uniquely beautiful face with distinct features that help her stand out and the fact that she's so thin (hopefully healthy irl though) it aids in the character being physically ill with her weak heart. She performs with such emotion and recovered incredibly in the second half. Truly stunning!
Don't worry about her health! In 2015, at the time of this production, she was 35 years old, married and mother of a four-year-old daughter. Her physique is due to 29 years of professional ballet training (6-8 hours per day).

These two, Zakharova already, are legends. Polunin has to figure out why he wants to dance but I for one am willing to wait for his full return, body and spirit. His trials have been so difficult and his talent, those human beings born with extraordinary natural gifts such as his, can be a burden as much as a gift. I'm the mother of such a human being and have witnessed and continue to witness, her struggle to be simply herself. I see the pain in him and wish him to find his way back to ballet. Even with a legend such as Zakharova, there can be tumbles. In a way, it makes me smile in seeing the perfection she is interrupted, if only for a few seconds, reminding us all that human doesn't equal perfect. Thank you Bolshoi!
@@zah936 I try my best. My daughter is full, tenured professor of Astrophysics and Cosmology at U Chicago. She is also married with two children, and in that, I take partial credit, having guided her through times that would break the minds of many. Overall a beautiful performance and I admire how quickly Svetlana Zacharova responds to her fall in the second act and retains the purity of line and ethereal quality to her dancing. I am sure moments like those are incredibly jarring and its a testament to her artistry that she recovered so flawlessly. My only criticism is Myrtha's entrance because it discounts the narrative flow of the choreography. Myrtha makes her entrance crossing the stage with a series of bourrées. These almost mechanical steps reflect the fact that she has just awoken from her grave and her folded arms reflect her position in her coffin. When she reappears she is free from constraints. Same kind of thing with Giselle and her whirring hops on one foot...again very mechanical movement followed by freer steps. At the end of the ballet all of the Wilis, including GIselle, adopt the bourrées as they exit the stage, showing that they are returning to the earth and resuming their casket positions. It's a little thing but it a vital one for the narrative. Sometimes I feel modern choreographers and stage directors do not take the time to really study the piece they are working on.
she leapt with so much power it looked like she mistimed when she would land. I also love how her posture on the floor became part of her performance. beautiful.
