Go get one man. It's money well worth it if you buy from the right person. Even abused diesels have a higher compression ratio than gasoline engines and usually last longer in the long run.
They're fantastic aren't they? From an inline series General motors Detroit, well any Detroit for that matter! The EMDS series of engines produced by General motors, also, those whiny ass starters on international harvester / Ford 7.3 l IDI pickups, to the Cummins b series, two other diesel engines in the general motors portfolio, the Toro flow, the infamous Oldsmobile, the DT series electronic from international, anything caterpillar! Hands down, and well anything Cummins, the Ford powerstroke, Navistar T444E, the VT series, The DT series mechanical, any international diesel for that matter, especially the DV series or the nine leaders. Mercedes OM-617, The General motors / Isuzu Duramax and its iterations. Ford diesel engines that were never produced for the US market sound rather interesting, as do ford/new Holland engines, Alice Chalmers turbocharged 6.
Loud, heavy, old, and pass, but interesting to watch, thanks for filming and posting. Love my Kubota light tower genset. On trailer, enclosure, 32g tank, quiet, low cost.
I used to work on these when I was in the Army and they're tempermental to get started just like a CUCCV blazer. Preheating multiple times is good to not have a hydraulic lock and also recommend moving the air selector on the filter housing to winter before starting. Every little bit helps with those rascals especially applying a load after a short warm up.
diddlebug72 that’s cool. Yeah I tried to move the air selector to winter but it was frozen and wouldn’t move . So far this has started up great . Haven’t had to use it yet, of course after buying it after a bad derecho that knocked power out for 2 week Followed buy a heat wave . We haven’t really lost power , only for a few hours . But it’s there and waiting if we need the old girl.
Mike Victor had to use the generator about 2 months ago. Tree fail down and knocked the hole neighborhood out for 2 days . Got it out set it up and we were living life like nothing happened. Had both the refrigerator and freezer going . All the lights on, couple fans for the dogs and cats so they didn’t get to hot . Had the dryer and washing Machine going plus the oven with dinner cooking on the stove . It was at about 75% load and was purring away . Also had the Internet modem on. Ran 48 hours straight didn’t skip a beat. Used a little above a 1/2 gallon and hour . So it would get expensive if we had to run it longer . But it sure beats setting in the dark. Most of the time it was 50% load . If I recall it actually gets better fuel economy at 70% load. These generators like to work .
A tip on starting Diesel engines when it’s cold. Starting fluid can be disastrous if used improperly. Safest way to use it is to wet a rag with it, put the rag over the air inlet and crank. Impossible to damage the engine. Another method is to put some fresh gasoline into a pump type spray container and give the engine air inlet little sprays of this. Far less dangerous than starting fluid.
Milo B will if it would ever snow here again I’d love to. But the winters suck here. Rain , rain , rain , rain. And mud. Lots of mud. I’m dieing to get at least one good snow storm so that I can put the snow blade on the tractor and try it out .
Being an air cooled diesel did/does this come with a winter kit? My reason in asking is because this generator has to meet military requirements for heat and cold, it has to be designed to run within a certain temp range in the desert. So in the winter environment air cooled gen sets will often over cool and not reach the appropriate operating temperature unless the airflow is restricted or reduced. Case in point I was up snowmobiling with friends and staying in our campers. Because the furnace ran almost all night it would drain the house battery by morning so we would run a little Honda eu1000i suitcase generator. One night it was ten below and it wouldn't run right without the choke on a bit. So I took a bit of masking tape and blocked off a little over half the intake cooling vents until the airflow was reduced enough for it to reach normal operating temperature. One of the sled rental agencies was using an eu2000is day and night with the oversize fuel tanks and said when it's this cold we always have to leave the choke on a bit for it to run right. Needless to say I gave them the tape to try and it worked on the bigger unit just fine. You might just fine it runs better, especially with a lite load.
It has a silencer kit, its a box that sets over top of it and blots to the frame. It would probably help it warm up, its insulated. theirs vents on the box you can open and close. if you close the vents then only air coming in would be from the cooling fan. It also has a lever that you can pull. It will cut off the air intake from the out side and start pulling air around the exhaust manifold. The box wasnt on cause the insulation was old and tearing. some was about to fall off. I thoght it was a fire waiting to happen. Got new insulation and a stain less steel mesh to pop rivet on. To be air cooled it seemed to not mind running in the cold once it warmed up.
Its in the barn now, It wasnt then cause I was working on it. needed it close to the house. Also the thing weighs 1,300 pounds. I didnt want to chance dragging the thing in a foot of snow up a good size hill. Id love to get the trailer for these things. They blot right up. has surge brakes. shocks heavy duty springs. has a frame to starp a tarp to the trailer. they seem hard to find.
A very beast,,,,,plug preheated,,,,wow,,,is neccesary in this weather,,,with three plugs starts in three cylinders,,,but is the engine runs,,,the compressed air rise his temp slowly until the ignition fuel,,,and then the engine works correctly,,,,,in some cases,,,,a flame from the stack occur,if some Cylinders doesm"t work.

+billy007191 Thats a good question. It was that way when I got it. My uncle has the same model of generator. The exhaust ports are pointing the same way. So I assuming it's suppose to be that way. My guess is that they point it way so that it can keep that port clean. And maybe so that sparks from the exhaust can't be blown on the ground and start a fire. The port it blows into causes the exhaust to blow in the port and then back out torards the shy. That's my best guess.
