Alonso runs the offense. You cannot replace him right now. Recker is also totally right, the Mets are going to evaluate the young guys this year and see if they are part of the future. Could change the course of the year. LFGM

A bunch of money comes off the books after 2024, especially if Verlander’s option doesn’t vest (with his shoulder issues, he may not get to 140 IP), so it makes sense to wait and re-sign Alonso (the way they did with Nimmo) rather than extend him now. Having said that, they’re more likely to be deadline sellers than buyers, so will they trade him midseason to get something more than just a comp pick if he walks, or are they that confident they can get a deal done?

This year had to be a no signing of the highest free agents ...all because of the reckless/gamble on signing those high paid old men last year. It didn't work so they took 1 year off to refresh. Cohen is a businessman and hopefully he will make good business decisions. Mets current players need to step up this year...young boyz and vets. Starting pitching and bullpen are definitely concerns that they willl need to address next year.

Finally someone noticed that the biggest Mets problem is they absolutely suck at scoring runs early in games. I believe they were last in scoring first inning runs last year in the entire league. It goes beyond that. They rarely put any crooked numbers on the scoreboard until innings 5 through 9. They need to be more effective in that regard..... particularly first time through the lineup. It was a huge issue last season.

The spin that too many Met fans have brought into this year is just so "pitiful. " For too long this season GM Stearns has smirked his way through press conferences stating his single minded plan in 2024 to depend on wannabe comeback players and unproven prospects only. This a quitting philosophy that should be shunned by Met fans who know that a creative and proactive GM unlike Stearns has been is to contractually and aggressively put into action needed players available who can help the Mets this season and beyond their out there if the Mets just bother to go for it and not punt on a saeson.

Drives me nuts when smart analysts like Kelly say things like “he hits 217” about alonso or he’s “one dimensional.” He had a 205 babip last year, it wont happen again. Hes a 260-350 guy generally w 40-100+ in a pitchers park. He has a 914 career road ops. He had +6 DRS and 0 OAA last year so hes become an average fielder. Hes not freeman but hes the best run producer in baseball for a reason. Advanced analytics were meant to show value in other areas when HR and RBI were misleading. They’re not w alonso - he has a 945 ops w RISP career… thats how you drive in 100 consistently.

Biggest thing in regards to Alonso is the fact that we had no real protection in the lineup. The average isn’t there because he probably feels like he has to do it all. I guarantee that if he leaves for another market or team he will be a 250-260 avg hitter and he will develop a better glove. Jeff McNeil hopefully returns to his batting average champion form. How much of a fair opportunity is given to Luis Angel Acuna to win the second base job in spring training is something to watch for early on.
Starling Marte also stands to lose his job to McNeil. Marte had a negative WAR while McNeil turned out to be our best defensive Right Fielder.
I think Alvarez is backing up Alonso and there batting average will determine there success.
Baty may not get enough patience to prove himself and Vientos has to hit better than Jeff Kent to overcome his defensive limitations.
Bader could also become a backup if Gilbert wins the job in spring training.
They will be as good as the three young guns can make them... And probably the weakest link out of Gilbert, Acuna and Baty loses the job to Mauricio next year.
Senga, Severino, Maena, Vassil, Megills sounds a lot better if you could put Snell in front of them.

Batting Nimmo and his .360+ OBP sixth is just silly, and the Mets’ future leadoff guy is Jett Williams, anyway. I think people are seriously overrating Acuña because of his big brother. Luisangel’s ceiling is much, much lower.

Bro Vientos , Batty combo is like 30 errors at third lol . Nimmo is looking like a 25 to 30 HR guy his 360 OBP is a waist he cant steel a base and if he does he runs the risk of getting hurt have you seen him slide at second when steeling a base. lol. @@thethrill2877 Again, Acuña isn’t ready (he took a step back, honestly), and while I agree that neither Baty nor Vientos is good defensively, the team isn’t going to give up on them yet. They’re going to get a LOT of rope this year. The Mets hope to be competitive, but they don’t actually care that much if they make the playoffs, because they know that if they do, it’ll be just barely, and they’ll get knocked out immediately. This is a bridge year. And you don’t bat Nimmo third or sixth even if you want to take him out of the leadoff spot (which is about getting on base, not stealing bases, but whatever). You bat him second, at the lowest. And again, the Mets have their future leadoff guy in Double-A, and his name is Jett Williams.

Anthony Recker is a good analyst. He’s absolutely right that the Mets’ rotation gives them a much lower ceiling than teams like the 2023 Marlins or Diamondbacks, who may have only won 84 games apiece, but were much stronger at the top of their respective rotations. Even if the Mets were to somehow make the postseason, they’d be an easy first-round knockout, barring significant moves at the deadline and/or a a surprising contribution from someone like Christian Scott. I think the Mets’ front office would prefer an 82-win, non-playoff season in which guys like Baty take a big step forward to an 85-win, first-round knockout driven by, say, a big September from Joey Wendle.

They lost a lot of games because of the bullpen last year not because they didn't score early . Baseball is not basketball it doesn't matter if you get runs early or late it just matters that you get more than the other team when the last out is recorded.

One thing that was so obvious what these guys didn't touch. The lack of leadership. They have a bunch of clowns all for themselves and their stats. McNeil failed hard after that contract. He's to mental there. Nimmo wants to be a leader, but acts too polite to step on anyones toes, Lindor is more focused on his brand and Gucci gloves. Marte has either checked out or knows he's done and is saving it for another team. The most damning? The young guns in the Braves excel, while the young Mets, who excelled in triple A comes in, does great the first couple of times at bat. Then they takes a nose dive? What is going on in that club house? These young guys are seeing to much laziness and no leadership, so they falter
