Canada should start making deals with the rest of the world so as not to be so reliant on the US. Also, we have to stop selling our resource companies to foreign countries and keep them for ourselves so we have leverage when ever these threats arise.

What a noval idea , eastern Canada actualy using Canadian ( alberta ) energy resources AND relying less on US exports and dealing with the maniac down south . PS . The first time Trump was in "power" opened the eyes of Canadians and Canadian politicians (US cares very little about Canada only themselves) ,not good in a trading partner. A trading partnership should be beneficial for both parties, not ONE SIDED. Canada started to open trade avenues with other countries with trading agreements (EU, Britain, Japan, oriental countries). Canada has trade agreements with many different countries so Canada now has options other then the US. Yes, trading with these other parties will be more expensive because of the distance evolved, they could be a "more reliable trading partner", therefore a better partner, less disruption. Unfortunately it will be the US citizens (middle to low income) that will suffer the most. Canada and Canadian citizens have options now other then the US. How will the United States deal without Canadian lumber, oil, natural gas, electricity and mineral resources. Also, Canada can limit or restrict access to land access from the lower 48 to Alaska and it's resources, making those resources more costly. The largest factor Is it is not just the United States against Canada but the United States against most of all the largest countries. Will Canada cave to Trump, I doubt it because of the state of the government today (minority government) and the new Liberal leader hopefuls needing to curry favour with Canadian citizens. Canadians are a proud people and they do not tolerate being pushed around. Canadians fight back.
@ it also, assumes that the USA allows it. 90% of CAN population lives within 120 miles of USA/CAN border. Canada has 76,000 people in military, USA has 2070,000. CAN has 4.32 TRILLION GDP. USA has 29.2 Trillion. The USA HAS THE LARGEST, MOST TECHNICALLY ADVANCED NAVY IN THE WORLD. Can has 40 ships and none of them are Capital ships. Canada is a Protectorate of the USA. It does not matter about patriotic protestations. If the USA wants Canada or any part of it, they can simply take it and the Canadian military would not last a week. That is REALITY. We all hope it does not come to that but, if the USA comes to the conclusion that they must have Canada, Greenland Or the Panama Canal, they can/will take them. Cold shower of reality.
Definitely. We're starting new trade agreements with Europe and Asia this year. We're selling LNG (liquified natural gas) to 9 countries. We have another LNG project starting in 2027 and 4 or 5 more after that are in different stages of development. We're also increasing sales of hydrogen to Europe this year.

As a Canadian, I feel that all that Canada has done , to always be on the side of the USA , has been in vain. Now it seems that we have to be treated like the worst nations on this planet. It's just three weeks ago that Canada signed the CEPA Agreement with Indonesia. That cheesed me off too… “USMCA legal challenges likely if *Canada* imposes tariffs”… WTF does USMCA have to say about Mango Mussolini’s tariffs that start/started the spat?
Trump only possesses one skill; to create chaos, drama and ill will, where none existed before. Europe and Asia have dealt with this problem in history before, when their King, or Emperor died and an eight years old boy came to the throne. Now the world has to deal with Trump, with a nine year old's brain.
@@FlushF00T I feel you, Canada does not want this, this is all Trump wants and the Americans who voted him in. He still needs to learn how tariffs work in the first place. However, Trump would first violate it by imposing tariffs, especially on items protected by the USMCA. The USMCA also has safeguards regarding tariff disputes, which might be what they are referring to. But if Canada doesn't believe those legal measures will protect its interests, the whole USCMA could fall apart if Canada decides to leave due to Trump's initial attack by imposing tariffs.
I'm a Dane, and I can tell you we from Europe know Trump is the instigator. I hope EU follows Canada's brilliant example and starts to cut ties with US.
You handily ignored two things. First, Trump has already said he plans to, once again, renegotiate the USMCA at the earliest opportunity. That, in itself, erodes confidence in trade between our two nations. Second, none of this would be an issue or concern if Trump hadn't initiated it in the first place. All this has done is highlighted to Canada that our dependence on U.S. trade is now permanently unreliable and not an aberration of Trump's chaotic first term. It leaves us no choice but to diversity our trade alliances regardless of what Trump does this time. Trump has also verified that the U.S. is an untrustworthy partner. This is not limited to Trump alone. The world generally saw his first term belligerence as mistakes made by an unseasoned politician but his reelection shows us that they were a feature not a bug. By returning him to power, we've been shown that the American people want and support his agenda. Sadly, I suspect that 'America First' will wind up being America alone'.
Absolutely correct. Trump is simply ignorant and stupid. He thinks he can treat the world like the greedy money hoarders he's use to dealing with. The world won't tolerate it. They will smile politely and try to appease the orange tyrant while making other arrangements to build sustainable and trustworthy trade alliances that do not include the US. This situation is manufactured by Mr. Trump, there is no need for this “trade dispute”. The “dispute” is politically motivated. We have the USMCA agreement, although not as good as the previous NAFTA agreement it does provide a manageable framework for trade. The last “trade dispute” started Canada down the road to trade diversification. We currently have agreements with the South Asia trade group (incl. UK) & the EU. So while the US insulates itself Canada is open for business & is developing infrastructure to develop that trade. A dispute with the US will do economic harm to Canada but there are only 40M of us. The countervailing Canadian tariffs will affect 400M Americans. We have shown in the past that we are prepared to discuss trade issues. We have also shown we are not prepared to be bullied & shoved around. If this “dispute” becomes a reality it will be solely the responsibility of Mr. Trump.

This is a chance for Canada to finally move completely to international standards. Proper and complete metrification so that we can sell into and purchase from *all* world markets with as little friction as possible. This should be a progressive implementation including even things like basic wiring to 220v (the international std for appliances). Canada has to become an international country. I am so f*cking tired of being held back by Americans.
Canada has no choice but to defend its economy, thanks to Trump's threats. Canada learned that appeasement doesn't work. After the last round Trump disliked the Canadian negotiators who were very tough, and knew which senators and governors to turn to in individual trading states dependent on Canadian goods, resources and materials, most of them red states. Chrystia Freeland, then a senior minister in Trudeau's cabinet, is hated by Trump, and she stands a very good chance to become Canada's next prime minister. After the =first Trump term ended Trudeau went to the EU and struck several key trade agreements with their 450 person economy. Time to build on that relationship.
I do believe that should it come down to Canada having to make these moves, it will definitely inspire other countries in trade realignments. 🇨🇦Canada is a strong country and will not tolerate threats nor actions of the same and do nothing; they will become an inspiration for other countries.
Canada should have removed dependence on any country 30 years ago. When the first free trade act was needed to ensure “fairness” and protected the water we should have been working in the back ground to eliminate the need for such an agreement. So yes the best time to plant a tree was 30 years ago the second best time is now. Now we need a Mexico Canada agreement and the EU/Common wealth agreement and do what the USA wants isolate them forget them and the IMF join BRICS and the new world power. This is what the USA wants by its actions. Every action has a consequence this move would hurt Canada short term but long term never again would a tariff be a threat.
We have nothing against our brothers and sisters in the USA, but we have to do what we have to do, we have natural resources the whole world needs so all though it may be a hit to us for a while I think we can easily weather this storm. Never put all your eggs in one basket, China is loving this.

The re-arrangemnt of trade patterns has already startet - it is not new. EU have entered an agreement with Mexico and with a number of South American nations - the lattter with volume over 20 % of accumulated world trade - and tariffs on import to US will accelerate that movement. US tariffs is a double edged sword but it also incites other nations to go for new opportunities - and where does that leave US?
Canada already has a free trade agreement with the EU , (CETA). The agreement was signed in Brussels, Belgium on October 30, 2016. The European Parliament approved the deal on February 15, 2017. Increased exports from eight out of ten Canadian provinces to the EU. Increased imports from the EU to nine out of ten Canadian provinces. Created opportunities for Canadian businesses in sectors like food exports, high-tech manufacturing, and building materials. Nevertheless, CETA remains only partially ratified, with 10 EU member states, including France and Italy, yet to approve. (It must still be ratified by: Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Poland and Slovenia). Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and Prince Edward Island. These provinces have preferential access to the EU market, which is their second-largest trading partner. British Columbia exporters have increased access to 500 million consumers, including duty-free access for forestry and wood products. Quebec manufacturers can have goods tested to EU standards by a Canadian certification body, which reduces costs and avoids duplication of testing. Quebec companies can also supply goods and services to all levels of EU government.

These 2 projects will hopefully get the attention of many countries in Europe and Asia and around the world: "Canada is open for business and we have lots to sell you. We don't want to focus on the US anymore".
Trade wise, the only reason the US is favorable is the proximity. That's it. But there are other markets/countries that would welcome Canada as trading partners.
Canada needs to build refining facilities for our oil, build the pipeline from Alberta to the ports in British Columbia and start trading our oil and natural gas to the European and Asian markets and turn off the valves on the pipelines going to the United States. Trump is on public record for saying they (the United States ) don't need our lumber or oil.
Everyone knows, US agreements is not worth the paper its written on. Any agreement has a maximum lifespan is 4 years, or as long as that president is in office. Canada and Mexico must find new markets for their own sake.
Although I agree with the concepts and do not see alternative option, I cannot say I'm optimisitic. The objective of Trumps and its bullyonnaires is not rational, it is emotional. So more Canada will retaliate, worst will be the conflict!. Will the Canadian economy resist the shock? One hidden card: Canadian are united, Americans are divided!
I am an American and I didn't vote for Trump and any of this tariffs and threats against two of our closest friends and allies Canada and Mexico are important trade partners and we are very foolish to get into a trade war with Canada and Mexico putting tariffs on imports means that the country you are putting tariffs on is going to put tariffs on you and the consumer is going to pay more money for stuff
From the Netherlands, (second large food exporter in the world!) chemicals in growing crops are pushed back to a minimum and no toxic ingredients in canned food or drinks like in the USA!
I would suggest that Canada stop tarifs for Chineese cars. We do not produce electric cars so it would not damage our industry, only American sales. And we could by cheap (as inexpensive) cars.
@@TkoddaLee Wrong. The American auto industries have been self-destructing for decades. It's only a matter of time before they close them all in Canada anyways.
I agree with this. If EV's from China were duty free, and we slapped 50-100 percent duties on cars manufactured in the USA. Canada would likely shift 70+ percent of all its auto purchases to Chinese car manufacturers.
As a Canadian, I'm not sure what will come or if Trumps tariff choices will cause an economic collapse in my country, but Canadians are in agreement for the most part that we aren't just going to lay down and take it. We will go down swinging. The U.S. has insulted our country, disregarded our contributions to the North American alliance, and threatened our survival. Until Trump and his sycophants are run out of office, I fully support our government treating the U.S. as a hostile country, and doing whatever they need to do to hit back economically. I hope Canadians sell their American properties and avoid the U.S. all together. I know many Canadians who want to boycott American goods all together. Hopefully, if Trump launches ahead, other people in other countries will recognize his threats of invasion seriously and boycott as well. I also hope other countries stand up against him if he tries anything with Greenland or the Panama canal. Attempting to take any land from a soveriegn nation should be treated with swift repercussions.
Pretty sure these hostile take overs are not something the American people voted for. I have American friends and family and I know they would support Canada rather than their own president going around doing what he is doing. His first day looked like an annihiliaton of democracy going after lots of countries in one go.
Canada does not need to fight tariffs, just increase the prices for raw materials and energy to world prices. No more discounts because they are close and were friends.
Will you be allies if Trump attacks Greenland, Panama or you, Canada?America didn't help anybody until after they were attacked ,WW1-WW2. And yet allies support them in their greedy wars - Korea,Vietnam,(Political), Iraq,Afghanistan Syria (oil). And they lost them all! Trump abandoned allies in Syria that were fighting against the RUSSIANS! Abandoned allies - he can't be trusted! Therefore America can't be trusted now!And now Trump is threatening you?
@@redrain72 yes, we do. At the present time, the U.S. is not a good trade partner. Trump is totally unable to be reasoned with or negotiated with.
It is not that simple. Have you looked at a map. Canada is isolated from the rest of the world with oceans between it and other countries.

This is all because someone wasn't paying attention in economics class. A trade surplus or deficit simply means one country wants more or less of another county's goods or services its not a subsidy it is pure supply and demand. The USA wants more of Canada's goods and services than Canada wants the goods and services from the USA. This is why the USA is in a trade deficit with Canada. They teach this in middle school. I just don't understand why this is so hard for some people to follow.

People are not buying electric cars. Governments have been trying to force them by incentives. Let people decide what to buy. Trump.

@@Brdstfff Yes, we live in an interconnected global economy. Canada needs to step up.
Freeland was selling our CPP at the WEF Conference!

No where!

Absolutely we cannot trust then US to sell us good planes . The French and the Swedes have some good options
WE DONT NEED TARIFFS DONALD WE NEED TRADE DEALS THAT BENEFIT THE PEOPLE, THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED YOU BOTH INTO OFFICE 🙏
I think it is also time to start making sure northern communities have accesss to greenhouses to grow their own foods way easer prospect than growing pot and feeds people& suplys jobs within isolated communities also medical marijuana is becomming world wide medicine & Canada should make the most of it
Great idea ,been saying lottsa greenhouses , for a long time ,we should have greenhouses ,everywhere not just in the north ,already. After all Canada is north of winter growing fields ,which we would not have to rely on ,especialy if that moron on the white house tariffs that as well .We,ve got to pull up our boot straps and just ,go for it . Quit relying on old ,old . ,reliable ?
@cecilsabourin94. Look at all the greenhouses in Iceland! They grow bloody bananas!!
