Zabka got no chance to be an 'actor' in the first movie, given only the "You're OK Rouso" line at the end. He got slightly more at the start of the second movie. This series shows his actual ability.

I love Johnny's chemistry with Daniel.. Love the moments when they sit together and talk.. I also like Johnny's chemistry with Amanda.. She knows how to reach to him and he listens to her.. It's like Penny and Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory..
I love that Johnny doesn't care who he's sassing. Kids and women aren't off limits. It feels like he's the origin story for equal rights, equal lefts.

William Zabka (Johnny) and Ralph Macchio (Daniel) remained friends over the years and had been talking about doing sequels for years, but never really tried. The creators of this show w were huge kk fans and it shows.
Actually, Ralph Macchio had always been (Publicly at least) AGAINST any more sequels... That was one of the primary reasons he did not appear in KK4 (Next Karate Kid)... Not that we could blame him for that... He always said they could never recreate what they had in the trilogy... Thankfully, he did relent and agreed to this series...
However... Pat Morita (Mr Miyagi) ALWAYS wanted more KK, and he would have been THRILLED to do CK... I even heard a story William Zabka told that Pat gave him a call one time with an idea for another KK project that, unfortunately, never came to pass... RIP Pat Morita...

I have heard him say it in multiple interviews, all recorded well before CK came around... You are correct that he was offered multiple ideas over the years though... At least he was open enough to give CK a chance... I know I was shocked (Pleasantly) when I heard he was in on it...

Cobra Kai never dies!
Martial arts became a big deal in the west in the 70s thanks to the introduction of Bruce Lee. I remember in the early 80s everyone wanted to dress up like a ninja for halloween. Then came Van Damme in the mid-late 80s who kept the door open for someone like Jackie Chan to make it big in Hollywood.
It was pretty wild. Even had monthly magazines dedicated to covering it.
Going back and looking at those is kind of embarrassing. It had almost as many charlatans as legitimate professionals in it, but it was new. No one really understood what was real and what was complete crap at the time.

One of the reasons Cobra Kai works so well is the characterization of Miguel and Robby.
Miguel is Daniel if he had met Johnny instead of Miyagi.
And Robby is Johnny if he'd met Daniel instead of Kreese.
Can't wait for season two reaction!

The old yellow Ford convertible is, in fact, the EXACT same car from the movies... Ralph Macchio was allowed to keep it after they completed production of KK3, and he owns it to this day... It is NOT a replacement or a reproduction of the original... It is the ACTUAL car from the movies... Wax on, Wax off...
He did get the studio pay for a restomod on it in return for letting them use the car.

Good catch on Johnny not getting recognition as a former champion! Daniel is probably front and center in the tournament committee's mind because he's one of their biggest donors and they know him.
I feel like one of the things they do so well with this series is that virtually every character has a chance to become a hero. And every character has a moment where they've become the villian. Everyone has their flaws. And sometimes you rise above them and sometimes you fall because of them. That's life..

Mr. Miyagi's house was real in the movies but was torn down. This version is a set in Georgia. There was a glimpse of the old yellow convertible he gave Daniel and Ralph Macchio actually still owns it and brought it to set.
Unsurprisingly, several of the young actors ended up dating each other, but I think they've all moved on.
Martin Kove, who plays Kreese is genuinely a great person. And you'll see more of Kreese in a way you've never expected. There is more to come, and you're in for a ride.
The whole series is like a love letter to Karate Kid - a bit campy, and cliche at times, a little unevern here and there, but it never gets preachy, and doesn't try to convince you that you are a bad person for liking the previous characters instead of the new, correct ones with the correct skin color, and orientation.

I remember episode 8 ending like that and me thinking what kind of crazy shit was gonna happen in episode 9, but then it was such a chill thing with Daniel and Johnny. Them having breakfast was so unexpected and hilarious. And then it ends with everything going back down the drain. LeSigh.

Given that the show is called Cobra Kai, it seems reasonable that the protagonist would be a member of Cobra Kai...
Nah, Amanda is the MVP because she waits in the shadows and makes her moves, despite not being as active in the story as Daniel or Johnny. It's kind of paradoxical, I would argue Amanda is the MVP BECAUSE she is not the main character, if that makes sense

Yeahhh... That's not even really a karate or martial arts move literally just a doctor/Chyroptactor thing, and since miyagi was in the military, he probably had training on how to put bones back.

Took some classes of other than martial arts, like miyagi DEFINITELY was the strongest dude in the karate kai verse, he probably took karate as his main foundation of his body, and trained in everything... The best show on TV. Probably the best example of how to handle an old IP correctly and relaunch it. Only Top gun maverick has managed the same and the end of S3 Star Trek Picard. It's faithful to The legacy characters yet still giving them growth. Successfully introduces fantastic new characters without taking anything away from the legacy characters and treating them all equally. As Mr miyagi said you have to have balance. If Disney wants to be successful again they should take note. Really enjoying rewatching this through your eyes you're going to love season 2. As others have said cobra Kai never dies just keeps going from strength to strength.

What I love about the show is how it shows that there is no evil or good characters, there are just characters with good or evil intentions . The one thing you can see that maybe the Cobra Kai method is not completely evil, it justdepends on who is applying it as with Miyagi Do. As a karate student and having learned tournament rules I can safely say there is no weight classes. It’s based on age and rank

Well, I wouldn't know the rules of this tournament, but in MMA not only can you target an opponent's injury, you're supposed to. That also means that if you have an injury, you better do everything to hide it from your opponent. The second he finds out, that injury becomes the primary target. It is what it is.

You will fall in love with all these characters, " Miguel, Robbie, Sam, Hawk, Demetri, and many others" , and so many call backs to the movies. Oh and Kreese is back, for a good while to. You can't have Cobra Kai without Kreese, except season 1. But it only gets better and better. Season 2 is much more heavy on Sam, and a new rival for her. You will also get alot more Amanda, she is here to stay, and i totally agree she is always the voice of reason and the greatest wife the writers could choose for Daniel.

Maybe now. But when it started, and when this scene was filmed, she very much was not.
@@DLFLux To be fair, this was an interview promoting season 6. And she started filming the show like 7 years ago. It’s possible that she could have gotten a black belt in a martial art (she didn’t specify which one) since then. I’ve seen people get black belts in Taekwondo in about that time. And there’s probably others that are just as quick.
@adolfob3370 while that is true, that would mean she wasn't trained that well for the final episode of season 1, indicating that it wasn't her doing the stunt at the end. She even said that it was really the gap between season 1 and 2 that she really started getting trained like the rest of the cast.
Amanda just gets better and better with each season. I absolutely love her!

Yes, they secretly have a strong relationship in this series even though they're friends in real life, reminds me a lot of how close Ryu and Ken in Street Fighter were as well. I took karate in 1987 at the age of 7 and didn't like it due to being a perfectionist with every move :(
The red and black background on Kreese's return is so cool. That's not only an awesome comeback, but an amazing cliffhanger!
If you're having a craving for Mr. Miyagi, there is the other movie he was in, "The Next Karate Kid". I saw it back in the 90s and don't really remember much just that Mr. Miyagi is in it. And I just saw an article that says that they're bringing that into the show.
The movie is.... mediocre at best but I must admit that the main character Julie Pierce is pretty good (granted she's not Daniel, Johnny, Sam or even Miguel) she's definitely the highlight of the movie.

As you will come to learn as you watch more of the show, Moon is probably the BEST girl in the show in terms personality, morals, and caring for others well being.
Yeah, Karate and Taekwondo tournaments don't have weight classes, just belt and age divisions. Can't say much about the kids' division cause I didn't do Karate as a kid, but the few times I fought in the adult black belt division, my opponents were usually at least twice my size. Those tournaments are mostly soft-contact, single-hit matches though, so there's less risk of a bigger guy clobbering you than say, boxing or MMA matches. If you're competing Judo or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, they do split you up by weight since that's all takedowns, pinning, and submissions. You will get roughed up in any kind of grappling competition, and a twig like me has no chance against grapplers the size of the bigger people I've fought Karate-style/trained kickboxing style.
There was nothing illegal about Miguel exploiting his opponents weakness, that's how fighters are supposed to win a fight there's nothing dirty about him going for his shoulder, if a tennis player sees that their opponent can't handle a serve to their left side you think that tennis player won't use that to win?
He literally attacked him during a break in fighting when Robby was holding out his hand to help him up that’s as illegal as can get and would absolutely be a dq for real

When cobra kai premiered, I was never expecting Kreese to come back at all. I thought he was long gone, but when he appeared, I freaked out. 😂 Can't wait for season 2 reactions!

One thing i admire with this show is that every character (even the minor ones) that they bring back from the movies, are the same actors/actresses, wich is amazing.

And to think that those of us who grew up watching The Karate Kid in the 80s had to wait decades to see Johnny Lawrence and John Kresse together again. The new generations are very lucky to be able to see the entire saga in a very short time.
Miguel didn't do any illegal moves when he attacked Robbie's shoulder, Yeah going after an injury is a dick move but it is within the rules, That's what Johnny meant when he said he wanted to win the "Right", He wanted a clean fight where Miguel didn't exploit something to win and used pure skill to claim the victory

The one thing that sucks about this show is probably one of the things what that makes the show, and that's the miscommunication. If everyone had just sat down and discussed their issues like adults, there wouldn't be a show, but everyone is too caught in their own past trauma and current circumstances to do so.

Both of these episodes are easily my top favorites of the season.
Episode 1x09: Love the Daniel and Johnny bonding over REO Speedwagon music, and their dislike of Ali's husband. And I love that moment when they stopped by Daniel's old apartment building.
Episode 1x10: It's the return of Sensei John Kreese! And it's also the return of the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament with Miguel as the winner.
Already so excited for your start to season two!

It's rather amazing that they've taken a 40 year old movie franchise, that's both sweet and a tad campy and decades later flipped it, added a ton of new younger characters, new plotlines but maintained the awesome character of the original, even humor, campiness, and a whole lot of heart. There's even nods to the absurdity of some parts of the original that became popular later as in all this over karate and stuff. It should not work. It should not hold the interest of younger viewers but that's a testament to the writing, the good characters they've created, all the great acting and performances by all the young actors. It's super well done. Because there's a thousand bad reboots or efforts to bring back the former IP and they rarely work.
There’s nothing wrong with going after an opponents injury in combat sports it’s not dirty or cheating,if your injured don’t fight or don’t be surprised if your injury is targeted that’s how it works,the only thing he did wrong was pulling his arm in between points and I’m pretty sure he got a warning for that.

23:11 it's not illegal to go for the injury since Robby signed off on being able to fight, meaning he was physically fit. Since Robby's entire shoulder was dislocated not being able to hit his arm/shoulder would have had Miguel severly disadvantaged in the fight. And since Robby's injury was as damaged as it was it's his own fault for saying he was physically fit enough to fight. You can say it's unsporting but at the end of the day Miguel won legally.
Glad you are LOVING Cobra Kai Vicky. I'm enjoying you enjoying it... And yeah... Kreese's return at the end was like 😮!!! Good stuff! But if you think that's it get ready. It only gets better.
Now... Why did Miguel not get docked points for attacking Robby's injury? Simple. It was perfectly LEGAL. Yanking his arm when in between rounds was not ok and he got a warning for it but hitting him there during the actual fighting was legal because it was a legal point area. You cannot penalize a fighter for making a legal movie. The fact that Robby had an injury there is irrelevant. Robby chose to fight injured and therefore put himself at risk. To tell Diaz he can't hit Robby there would actually put Diaz at a disadvantage because he would then have less viable areas to strike for points and Robby would have an area he absolutely did not have to defend because Diaz would not be allowed to hit him there. At the end of the day it is a Karate Tournament that is centered around combat... And in combat sometimes people hit you where you are injured. Dirty as it was... It was not illegal and therefore he did not receive a penalty. I agree it was a nasty move but technically fair play.
