    60 years with type1 Doug here. Another courageous video by you. It’s never easy to publicly display your trials and fears, but you do it beautifully. As I was typing this, my Dexcom alert sounded, telling me that my extreme low a few hours ago was now roaring upward. Sometimes I feel like I am running out of steam to fight this fight much longer. So, as you so correctly said, sometimes you just can’t win. So, as per your instructions, I am thinking about the positive things I am blessed with.
    1. Next Thursday Dexcom flies me to Atlanta to be in their new series of ads and social media spots.
    2. Since my young super star American world class swimmer wife lost her battle from brain tumors last August, I am doing diabetes alone. BUT...my new support person is my grief counselor Meredith. She is very helpful and totally emerged in learning about the trials of type 1.
    3. And the most important fun/positive thing today is........you brought the green nail polish back. AWESOME.

    I remember one time recently having one of those days. I had a big lunch with my parents, and spent nearly 15 minutes meticulously carb-counting. Despite the efforts, I wound up being ~220 2 hours after.
    I corrected with 1 unit (this would normally not drop me very much) and wound up having a serious low

    • @missme9802
      @missme9802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tip: sometimes before correcting, just give yourself another hour and see what's happens. What happens to you is you tested and saw 220 you corrected it but it was already dropping! Just took a little while longer than 2 hrs.

    Great advice to share! Last year while going through some bouts of depression due to dialysis, I came up with these same techniques and they really are the key to help get yourself out of that funk. Filling your head with things you’re grateful for doesn’t leave much room for those negative thoughts. Also, after 32 years of T1 I’ve finally come to the realization that bad days are just going to happen and not too stress, but rather bolus and move on. I love watching your channel because you’re so on top of your diabetes, and still share your challenges and frustration with it, so when I feel like I’m doing everything right, and still have some troubles, then I see the same from you, it really makes me aware that it’s not me doing something wrong, but rather the nature of the beast that we know as diabetes. 😘😘

    • @MichelleLord
      @MichelleLord  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Katie! I'm sorry to hear that you have gone through dialysis. I can imagine that would be very tough :(. However, I'm glad to hear that these techniques also help you get through a bad day. Unfortunately with T1D, these days just happen, no matter how hard we try. I'm so grateful that I have the opportunity to share the challenges of diabetes here on TH-cam, to remind other T1Ds that they are not alone 💙

    I feel you so much with these kinds of diabetes days! I think what helps me a lot is just taking a second to just breathe and remind myself that it happens and it's bound to happen and that it's okay, it's not my fault, and that I know I'll be okay (the great thing about a bad diabetes day is that it's only a day!)

    Great video as always! I have up dealing with a low this morning (tip - try cran-grape juice not much of a spike! *smile*) and the dreaded beep beep from the DEX! Our bodies chemistry is different everyday and therefore so is the treatment, so once I figured that out and stopped listening to the endo with their "one size fits all approach", things got better. Good luck with the dancing next week!!!

    Great video idea, diabetics need all the support they can get so it's good to hear how others cope. I'm a bit of a control freak, especially now with my miaomiao so when levels rise or fail to elevate I get pretty frustrated. Your tips are wise, making a diary or looking back at the day's food/events can help pinpoint the reasons for the fluctuation. If you can't figure out exactly then you should remind yourself there are many many reasons for abnormal levels: illness, temperature, insulin age, pump site, exercise today/yesterday, was your coke diet etc. And as you say be grateful, I'm very grateful for the diabetes technology I have, the healthcare my country provides me and the support available at your fingertips

    • @MichelleLord
      @MichelleLord  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Michelle!
    Thanks so much for this video. I had a really bad diabetes day Monday and Tuesday this week. I've been battling a cold so my numbers have been so erratic and i ended up waking up after a nap at 360 (yikes.)
    If I'm having a bad diabetes day I usually like to throw on something cute and comfy and go on a walk. Or even if I'm having a bad diabetes week I like to unplug and take a pump-cation and go back to the old school methods so I'm not fixating. I just try to remember that I have to run an organ manually day in and day out and not even a professional can do it perfectly.
    Love your videos. xoxo

      I also do that yesterday was such a horrible day for me I was low constantly and was starting to lose hope. I canceled out of my last three unimportant classes went home and put on comfy clothes and took my dog for a walk. Later I spend the rest of the afternoon on netflix with some snacks

    Thanks for sharing Michelle! I've been having quite a few of these bad diabetes days lately and my go to reaction is to just ignore but its a negative reaction. I like how to rethought of your situation and saw the positives. Very good strategy! I'm going to try that instead of my usual ignore and it'll go away haha. Thanks 💙💙💙

    Hi Michelle, I was always told by diabetes team not to treat a high after a low BG. So I would not give a correction bolus if my BG was slightly high after treating a low.
    You are right, It really can be hard to deal with the constant self monitoring!

    I can’t wait for you to get the t:slim X2 with Dexcom G6 and Basal IQ! It’s a game changer for avoiding hypos. I saw a press release about the tslim: X2 getting approved in Canada recently.

    Hello Michelle, we meet at the last CIM virtual slipstream. I often have bad days and somehow seem to be able to get through them, but after 42 years of this I seem to be struggling a bit more recently, and as a male don't really want to talk or share these feelings even my wife. I am learning now that it is good for my soul to let these feeling come out and have been trying to get more men in the T1D community do the same. I have been organizing a FB group called T1D Men's Mental Health group to try and get more dialogue going with men. Our topic tonight is that what you just talked about in this video "How to turn a bad diabetes day into a better day"! I know men are much more action instead of reflection so have been struggling with how to approach this. Any suggestions would be great, Thanks!

    These days are the worst days seriously when blood sugar levels are not controlled in whole day.I prefer to do some exercises when it happens but same day there are low bg levels which is very horrible.

  • @xXHanagetsuXx
    @xXHanagetsuXx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hate when that happens 😣 The other day at around midnight I was 268 so I corrected what I was supposed to, but then I started rapidly dropping with double arrows and trembling horribly uncontrollably. I’m not sure why it happened 🙁 I had a good day up until that point.

    Hi Michelle, First of all you are a great vlogger and I enjoy all of your videos. I am also type 1 (diagnosed 2 years ago) and I can totally relate to your "bad day situation"...The first 18 months of my diagnoses were a complete bg roller coaster and i could barely feel normal. Then i decided to try to tweak a little bit my diet - i reduced the amounts of carbs that i eat and this simply worked miracles for me.. My bg curve became much steadier and hypos decreased(in fact i have less than 5 hypos a month now compare to the 4 per day before) I am not on a strict low carb diet or keto diet and I still got amazing results. Have you thought about trying something like that? There are different resources about low carb diets (dr Bernstain for example) .Anyway I am not suggesting anything, I just wanted to share my own experience with you:) You are doing a great job in managing your condition for such a long period of time and staying positive. Best of luck! And one more time - thanks for the great videos!

      Hi thank you so much for the lovely comment! I really appreciate your support! I have tried low carb and it honestly just isn't for me. This was a particularly bad day for me, and my blood sugars are usually quite stable. I appreciate you sharing your experience ❤️, and I'm so happy that it is working well for you ☺️.

    Hi Michelle liked this video you made and especially your advice of gratitude I totally going to implement that one :)
    Personally when I have a bad diabetes day I pray, and always helps especially to the holy Virgin or to a Saint Rafael Arnaiz Baron, he is the saint of diabetes (Yep there is a saint of diabetes :o) and for some reason every time I fear a low or a high coning I pray to him or the Virgin and always helps. So I totally recommend the praying in bad diabetes days but also in the good ones cause it feels great feeling that you're not alone with this, and that you have God's eye caring about you. Try it sure is going to help ;)

    'm going to start using Dexcom G6 in about a week. I was using the Freestyle libre but the numbers were not accurate for me... My questions are 1) I'm noticing many youtubers are wearing their dexcom sensors on many different body sites other than what Dexcom suggests. Are the numbers accurate on you arms? 2) I sleep on my stomach most of the time. Will wearing the sensor on my stomach either be uncomfortable or will it interfere with my readings.

    • @MichelleLord
      @MichelleLord  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the arm is not approved by Dexcom. I find the arm to be very accurate for me. However, I know people who have tried it and didn't find it accurate. I think it really depends on the person. Wearing your Dexcom on your stomach is not uncomfortable. Maybe you could try to place it to the sides of your stomach if you find it's annoying when you sleep?
