I just used my bosch hand mower for the first time today. It was so easy, even kind of relaxing and therapeutic. I grew up using a hand mower but the old ones were lot heavier to push. I prefer a hand mower to a noisy petrol motor. I've had both. The lawns not perfect but it's good for in between the landlords lawnmower mans irregular visits :)
Thanks for sharing. Agree that the old ones are heavier. Good point. The Bosch is lightweight comparatively. And don’t have to deal with batteries, cords or petrol.
I am very fortunate to own a Qualcast E1, the first mower made by Qualcast, this little push mower is almost 80 years old, when sharpened, oiled and adjusted this little gem cuts like a barber ✂️
I have a Bosch AHM 38 G and it cuts like that "Scotts". I still use it - once every few days in Spring and summer, on lawns that are quite a bit bigger than that one, are sloping, and full of weeds. If I let them go a week or more, I can't use the Bosch - it's too hard to push, slips and jams all the time. I was wondering why until your video made me check - I bought it in 2018 and haven't sharpened it in all that time... must do that tomorrow!
Yeah, I used mine today, and the grass was long. It was easy going, but sometimes I wanted to pick up the push power and throw it against the wall. I think I'll need to use it regularly to avoid the frustration. It's a nice machine.
first it's a good idea to remove any debris from the lawn so that you're lonely mowing over grass not uneven ground or substantial sticks or stones or anything like that cause that's gonna dull the blade it's on these would need to be sharpened from time to time and i'm sure the working parts of it would appreciate some oil to keep it running smoothly think of it like a pair of scissors after while you need to re shapen them. mower also have limits to the maximum height of grassit prefers. great video.
After trying to mow my lawn with a reel lower, before purchasing one, please know this. If you have a yard with slight hills, bumps, _please_ get a gas mower or riding mower. It gets extremely difficult with a reel mower. I spent 6 hours outside on a small-medium lawn yesterday, went over the grass several times, and I still couldn't get my lawn looking decent enough.
@@sizquirtt same, and I have a decent sized yard. Not too big bit with taller grass. My grass looks amazing and it didn't take forever. I think it's more about fitness level than anything
@@darkspd31 if AOC and her ilk have their way , you had better get used to going back to that antiquated way of doing things . California has already banned the sale of new gas burning lawn equipment .
.. the right way is to mow it 'one way mow' .. imagine a two lane traffic; each lane going just in one direction .. push it to the end of the run then do the next lane on the return trip.. each lane one way .. the result is a beautiful striped lawn as it has a roller that compress the grass one way .. try to mow it every couple of weeks when the growth is not too long and thick; it'll be way easier .. the way that you are doing it here you are mowing it all over on all directions .. but of course it gets the grass cut too 😂
I've recently started using a manual reel mower on a one acre lawn after previously using a gas push mower. The passive mowing with the reel mower, it is nowhere near as noisy, doesn't vibrate due to a motor, and requires far less maintenance compared to a gas push mower.. oil changing, blade removal and sharpening, pull rope replacement, filter replacement, filling with gas, etcetera. Plus, push mowers don't like to start hot so you have to mow all in one go. With a reel mower you can mow more passively at intervals, and as needed when the faster growing grass in your yard needs it.
I recently bought a Bosch ahm 38 model I assembled all the parts according to the instructions but I noticed that the wheels don't turn forward when I push forward they just stop when I push forward, the wheels only work on the backstroke, they only turn backwards only. any idea what is causing this ? ? do I have to adjust anything ??
I have an old push mower, no batteries though. 😂, Unfortunately I can’t do anything anymore useful. I try but then my nerves tell me otherwise.. damn fibromyalgia
I brought the exact push mower and hmmmmn??? I guess I need to lower the blade further to get a nicer clean cut lawn. I do the perimeter of the lawn first and always use the catcher.
Thanks for watching. The blades are supposed to be self sharpening as you use it. Never had to sharpen them. But you do need to adjust the lower blade so the position is just right for cutting.
That's a workout!.........................for such a short space............I bet your heart sounded like a DRUM! The Bosch is either new or you've done a really good job of sharpening the blades.................the Scotts needs sharpening. When you let it grow that tall, the mower blades end up cutting the same blades of grass several times and that's why it takes more effort. At first I thought you had mulch around the edges but there's no way the mowers would have handled mulch.......................mulch stops the blades from turning.
Thank you. No it’s a used Bosch but I did try to sharpen it. It’s not such an intense workout but at least it’s better than a walk. That was my idea which is to get some exercise while doing the lawn.
thinking about it. but looking at this video, you do have to go over every patch 3 or 4 times. I am not sold to be honest. I was going to buy one before seeing this video.
1 months worth of growth here is from waist to shoulder height in the summer for bluegrass varieties, paspalum and other pest grasses. It is insane. Close to timber!
You also need to check if it is mechanically working. Sometimes the pinion gear which is plastic wears or breaks and even when you push it the reel is not turning and cutting.
@@Gumbootfamily its the great states 16 inch reel mower. just to let you know ive messed with the blade alot over the years so its not at factory blade position. mostly eyeball blade position. what i do is i set a light under the blade sometimes and tweak the position till no light shines through where the blades touch. this mostly works but still have to tweak it alittle.
I’ve been in a quandry about which way around to put the handle. The Bosch site pic is as shown here but so many retailers carry a pic of it the other way around. I’m interested the difference you found, as the other way around seems more intuitive and to give a little more height. Also interested whether this TH-camr has tried the other way around yet?! 🙂
Yes, they cut grass. However, look how long it took you for that little patch and how much you struggled in some parts. I like Reel Mowers, but they really only do well on shorter grass. If you’re cutting every couple of days they’re worth it over a gas powered. They have real precise cutting, so on like short turf type lawns….they make those look amazing. Anything other than that…..they suck.
The manual and the photos show that the handle is supposed to be facing back. Is that wrong? www.amazon.com/Bosch-Manual-Garden-Lawn-Mower/dp/B004JMTY2K

You need to tighten the blade to scrape the under blade otherwise it won’t cut.

No, it is better for the soil to recycle the grass nutrients. The grass gets much healthier.
The Bosch cuts my grass very uneven. Looks like a hacked job than a mowed lawn, no matter what height I set it
It may be the lower blade needs to be adjusted. May not be cutting height issue.
Very hard to cut on the edges
Not really. Just run the wheel over the threshold and just cut the grass at the edge.
