I'd listen to you till the end. even if you told things I already knew because I'm learning new ways to tell them. You are a good teacher, sir. :-)
Robin, thanks. I did learn one thing that I didn't know/do before. That is holding down the Liveview button enabled quick access to the menu option. Great and thanks!
This video shows why we need a good printed user manual with each new camera, so we can easily find out all the features - and not have to rely upon the experts like Robin to show us that they are present but not intuitive or easy to find
I watch Robin’s videos. Rob Trek is good too, and Robin has collaborated with him. Reading the dpreview site, as always, can also, help. I don’t read Japanese, but I assume if I did, there are more resources that English language users never see.
I’ve used Dof preview since my OM1 and diopter adjustment since my OM4, but hadn’t realised any uses for test shot and light box. Brilliant tips, thank you.
I use the DoF preview, especially on vacation taking environmental portraits. Sometimes you want the back blurred and others you don't want to destroy the view behind, like those "wonderful bokeh" photos in Paris with... is that the Eiffel Tower behind?
I saw Lightbox in the Olympus menu, but didn't understand its use, until you explained it perfectly. Testshot what a nonsense! ...but in flash situations!? ...yes its definitly faster, than shoot and delete (less button-clicks) Your context to some of the functions is so enlightning. ...and will never be found on paper in a manual. ...therefore, thank you so much!
#3-DOF preview: I used this constantly for macro shots on film systems. Still do for digital macro and some portraiture. I find it useful, but YMMV. Nice, helpful video! Thx!
No worries, that is the reason I am making these videos, Olympus has included many interesting features in their cameras, it is a shame some of them never see the light of the day.
Great video! I found out about diopter adjustment by accident: I turned the dial but didn't notice any change on the LCD screen... Then the evf was out of focus and took me a complete day to figure it out hahh dof preview is really useful, as well as the test shot feature. The other two were unknown. Thanks!
I used the Lightbox feature on my old E620. Yesterday I wished it was on my EM1....and today you've shown me it is. Thanks. I'm going to enable it right away.
Thanks Robin. I wear glasses and so discovered the diopter correction early. I don't know how I could do without it. I also used to assign the DoF preview button to peaking but since getting an EM1-II that has two front buttons I have started setting the top button to peaking and leaving the bottom button as DoF preview. Using both is very useful when taking close up shots without the need to bracket aperture where depth of field is limited.
Lightbox was new to me and I will use it now I know it. Test was new, but not sure I will use it. DOF I use a lot and I always turn off the view finder auto switch as it switches too often when I do not want it to switch. I wish they had a sensitivity adjustment for it.
Nice one Robin! The diopter adjustment is something I use all the time. It gets out of position when taking the camera out of the bag and putting it back. Should be a way to lock that in position!
@@robinwong Actually, I've had a similar issue with it moving, although it doesn't matter much to me as my eyesight is variable anyway, so I often need to adjust it.
Robin Wong Maybe it’s just because the camera is getting old. It’s the original M5, so it has 8 years on the clock now. And the bag is a billingham with soft fabric inside with a tendency to get any kind of movable switch out of position.
I knew about most of the feature with the exception of the lightbox, but I haven’t used them much. The depth of field option looks particularly useful. While I always enjoy your tours around your beautiful city, I have been learning a lot from these videos where you talk about the features on Olympus cameras and various skills in photography. Thanks for continuing to post in spite of the lockdown!
Robin; thanks for this video; although I was aware and have used the Depth of Field preview button, I was not aware of the other features you identified. This was very helpful.
A nice set of tips, for me the light box was a good one but could you go over it in more detail. I tried to work out a work flow below, but it probably is not the best way, and what other things can you do from the light box view. Can you mark the right image for protection etc. All I could work out was how to add the deletion flag. From what I can see these are the steps 1) find an image you want to compare 2) go to light box view, the selected image with be in the left pane 3) use front dial or < > on D pad to scroll to the image you want to compare in the right panel 4) Use read dial to magnify both images at once 5) press Fn1 to get scroll arrows on right image 6) scroll the right image to where you want it to line up with left pane image 7) press Fn1 again to get scroll bars on the left pane as well 8) use left and right D pad buttons to scroll both images together To flag an image to delete, press "rec" button to tick the image on the right pane I could not see how to protect am image from the light box view
I was not aware of the lightbox option. Thanks for that tip! I use DOF preview. My OM-D E-M10 MKII is a camera that does not have a DOF preview button, so I assigned it to the record button.
Are use the toggle between the LCD and optical viewfinder so much that I have reassigned this to the AEL/AFL button for ease of reach on my E-M1 II. I have reassigned most of the function buttons for my own preference -such a great option on Olympus cameras! I also use the DOF preview a fair bit. Thanks for the suggestion about using the test picture function for flash shots. I seldom use flash, but it would indeed be handy then.
I use DoF preview pretty often on my E-M1iii and Lumix GX8. Will be enabling lightbox preview for sure, I've been cycling back and forth through images using the front dial like a schmuck.
I've turned off the LCD accidently. I use the DoF Preview quite often and I use the diopter adjustment. The others I didn't know about but could see myself using them. Thank you.
Another helpful Video, thanks. I am interested in a comprehensive video on using the Olympus flash units, especially FL 900R, on the OM D E M 1 Mk ll. Is something like this planned?
Due to becoming unable to handle the weight of the Canon 5DM4 and its gear, I switched to the OMD E1 MIII. I really missed the DOF button...now I have it due to this video! Thank you very much!
@@robinwong there is so much to learn on this camera! I just missed it...one item the Canon has is "shutter sensitivity" which enables me to press without camera shake. Did I miss that option on the Oly too? I do love this camera; it's light weight with a lens attached. Makes it easy to go take photographs!
This is great, Robin! Really helpful and informative. I *always* set the EVF diopter correction. It's critical if you use the EVF for manual focussing. I've used DoF preview a few times. But not any of the other features you mentioned. I may give them a shot now!
@@robinwong I remember having to *buy* dioptric corrections for my Canon AE-1, so having it built in is such a convenience! You should do a followup video to bring some attention to other obscure Olympus settings. For example: Lens Exif Settings (*such* a boon on my E-M5 Mk III!), pixel mapping, copyright, etc. So many to choose from!
The diopter is a bit on the tricky side to adjust, but well worth the effort.. Just look thru the EVF, and adjust until the focus grid is sharp.. As for the LCD screen? Yeah, I just flip it around, and Bobs yer Uncle! LOL..
I wear glasses and constantly struggle with glasses on, glasses off, viewing through the viewfinder, previewing etc. I also use depth of field, but I find the location on the front of the camera not very ergonomic. Never thought about changing the button location. Thanks fot that tip.
Yes, I agree. I think, I should calibrate my EVF, because there are differences in the brightness of the EVF to the image. But if I tune it, I can see almost no difference in the EVF. Maybe there is a trick?
I found the diopter dial by accident a while back. I wear reading glasses and it was a game changer for me. I can now take pictures without my glasses.
Thanks for the tips. I have to admit that from the mentioned tips I only was familiar with the depth of field preview button and the diopter dial. So still much to learn...;-)

Thanks Again for all you videos..Take care :-)
Good one. I can't remember whether I knew about EVF/LCD toggle switch long press feature. I seldom shoot stage events from the audience nowadays. I found out about DOF preview when I first got an f/1.7 lens and was walking with you along Jalan TAR - I kept shooting it and it looked ok on Liveview (f/2.8) but I was getting blurs because the lens was set for f/1.7 On the E-M1 there is an enhancement - I can set DOF Preview to be held on - that's nice
thanks for another great video! I actually use the vf on/off button manually all the time. The test photo however was something new, gonna use that. Thanks again! I am impressed you are managing content despite all sitting duck at home situation :) Something Id like to learn more about is the pre-capture mode. Ive tried to use it and watched videos but I really cant make heads or tails of it.
A feature not discussed is manual focus magnification using tele lenses, the amount is adjustable, high like 7X is very hard to use for a bird in the sky and changing to 2-3X can only be done when magnification is active. Move the manual focus ring to activate, then move the rear wheel to change it.
I have used the diopter correction on the viewfinder. Before autofocus came out on film cameras, as a project we bought a 16 diopter lens and had a camera shop glue it the SLR viewfinder. My vision was that poor before I had artificial lenses inserted.
One of the regular complains I get from new camera owners is how blur the EVF looks. I then asked if they have adjusted the diopter, after they did that, 100% problem solved.
@@robinwong Your eye is very close to the glass, so there is a lot of refraction required and the correction we add or subtract is small in comparison to the total correction of the lens system.
Thanks for the hidden features. I was using Dof preview on my em5 but changed to focus peaking. I had the feeling that it changes the aperture as well because the screen was getting darker. but just checked the em1 and focus peaking does not impact the aperture. 😭
Thanks for your videos! I love Olympus tips series. I have em-10 III with only two fn buttons available to me( So far I installed on them peaking and af/mf switch. But I really want to have depth of field preview as well. Is there a way to program one more button or maybe is depth of field available on some other button as well?
I never used the picture compare function. I do all my comparing, if necessary, at my computer. I frequently turn off the display, but only using the display flipping method. Actually, the DoF preview is one of the functions I use frequently on my camera. I didn't know the test shot function, and I haven't missed it at all so far. The diopter adjust function is a bit controversial to me. I do wear glasses, and if I have the diopter setting adjusted to my eyesight, I always need to take my glasses off before I look through the viewfinder. That is very cumbersome, so if I need to look through the EVF, I just do it with the glasses on without prior modifying the diopter. Since that is somewhat awkward to, I normally compose and focus via the display. For me, the EVF is only a backup for special circumstances.
Why? The function lever is still a problem and I strongly suggest turning it off. Nothing changed. You can feel free to do whatever you prefer with it though.
1. Lightbox I have found it, but i prefer simply to zoom in and check single shots. 2. Turning off the screen On M5 Mk III i simply close the LCD. On M10 which has tilting LCD its more useful. I did that once by accident. BTW M5 Mk III got a very useful firmware update. When the LCD is fully opened (eg. on the left from the camera), eye sensor on EVF is disabled. 3. Depth of field preview I am oldschool photographer and my vintage Practica LTL 3 has similar feature. On M10 i even changed WB balance button to have this feature, on M5 Mk III Its perfect for portrait prime lenses with narrow DOF. 4. Test Picture I would not mind keeping the image, mainly if i do reports/party photography. I also keep histogram/EXIF data from the location in this manner, so i can just check the settings and use them in the future. 5. -1 diopter on my left eye, -3 on right :D
Hi Robin. Re the Depth of Field preview button. I've noticed that when this is depressed then the highlight warning becomes more widespread. E.g if I reduce shutter speed (one third increments) till the highlight warning disappears and then depress the DoF preview button then some areas of 'warning' will re-appear. Do you know why the camera does this (my EM-1 mkii and EM1 mki exhibit this)?
You said that ea h of the letters in the cog menu stands for a set of topics. Is this written down somewhere, it would be so useful for using the menu system. Thanks and stay safe.
I learned this from Rob Trek: A = Autofocus, B = Buttons, C = Controls, D = Display, E = Exposure, F = Flash, can't remember G, H right now, I = Info, J =Junk (Miscellaneous). Hope this helps!
I know all 5 features. On OMD 10 II button to switch EVF/LCD is on right side of EVF. I shot many time at night, so I find solution to turn off LCD. I enable Lightbox but I use it maybe one or two time. DOF preview? I used MF with focus peaking so I can see DOF and don't need DOF preview. Test picture? If I must first reprogram one button and then shot test picture faster is shot normal picture and saw it with play button, isn't it? I also have a glasses so I must adjust EVF to see sharp pictures.
None of those tried. Will set all or most of them now. I was impressed with the DOF preview at f16 still showing normal lighting, even though the 2.8 view was lit well also. On my DSLR, it would go very dark (if f16 was the setting).
I own an OM-D 10m2. OM 5m1, and OM-1m1 which of these cameras have the features mentioned in this video? Are they only avaialble on later models of the OM-D?
I am going to suggest that the Test Picture option is a terrible idea for one main reason. What happens if you take a test shot and for whatever reason the photo is just fantastic and can't be easily recreated (for example, photographing a baby and they make the most perfect face during the test shot or you catch your dog in mid bite as they try to grab a fly out of the air that was passing by or that weird thing happening in the background at the park). Now this perfect shot is just sitting there mocking you on the LCD screen. At best you can whip out your mobile phone and take a photo of the LCD screen. Heck, the shot doesn't even have to be remarkable or perfect. It might simply be "that is actually a good shot of what I wanted. Storage is cheap and most of us usually have 100s if not 1000s of photos worth of space on our SD cards at any given time. If you are really that hard up for storage, then simply take the shot to check your settings and then simply delete it afterwards if it isn't a keeper.
Having been using Olympus cameras since the E-P1, I can't imagine someone using a E-M1x having never used an Olympus camera before. The menu only makes sense if you have had a lot of experience with it. There are like 10x more menu options on the big cameras.
Great video Robin. You help people understand their cameras and how to use what Oly gives them. I would like to add one more function. Focus limiter in m5, m1, m1x. I think this feature is forgotten in a mirrorless world and not used often. No reviewer mention this in any test. This is a huge mistake. This is an extremely helpful feature and it can also increase our efficiency in shooting sport, wildlife and more. Only fuji xpro3 got focus limter. It has been available on Olympus cameras for a long time.
Focus limiter is not unpopular, and it is quite a new feature available only from E-M1 Mark II onward. I've mentioned it in my Focusing tips video for OM-D. It isn't fair to place it here, as all above features are applicable to most Olympus cameras, not just the flagship.
Lightbox is an amazing feature. Use “OK” to replace the image on the left and use the shutter scroll wheel to compare the new “favorite” image to other. Thanks Robin!
When the camera is set to iAuto, the camera defaults most of it's settings to be "idiot-proof". I don't think a beginner who starts out on photography and got a new camera, using auto mode would know or want to use back button focus. That is a little unrealistic to expect such implementation. If your focus stacking is greyed out, most likely the lens you used is not supported. Check Olympus website for lenses that are compatible with in camera focus stacking.
The iAuto setting is entirely superfluous once you figure out how to use the camera. Just go with *Program* if you really want both aperture and shutter speed set automatically. They are the same without the dumbing down of the other camera features. Even then, I almost never use P. A and S are just much more useful modes.
@@robinwong i was introducing my daughter the BBF for fun of course, she suddenly switch the dial to iauto and asking me why no green box. Hehe... For focus stacking need lens compatibility, i just know it. Thx for the info. Nver know it.

WOW Olympus THE camera! ...love your shutter therapy photos in Malaysia... i lived in Singapore in the '70s and visited KL at that time ...I Love Lat... nice to know they honored him in the park with his cartoon characters...I have a few of his books ;-) Best on to me is "Lat the Kampung Boy" ;-)... Thanks Again for all you videos..Take care :-)
Thank you very much Robin sir... Defth of field it's very usefull future.
this was very useful!
How do you make the DOF preview be on all the time? I have em1 mark 2.
I did not know about Light Box or Test shot!
Glad that I have shared them here.
thanks for another great video!
I actually use the vf on/off button manually all the time. The test photo however was something new, gonna use that. Thanks again!
I am impressed you are managing content despite all sitting duck at home situation :)
Something Id like to learn more about is the pre-capture mode. Ive tried to use it and watched videos but I really cant make heads or tails of it.
One, viewfinder adjustment for my glasses. I will now use some of these. Another great info video !!!! “Thank you”, Jim, Charlotte, NC.
The EVF adjustment is very important!
Test shot (useful for flash photography) and Lightbox Preview were completely unknown from me. So a big thanks Robin!
You may perhaps want to upgrade your discussion on the function lever. The OM-D E-M5 III has changed.
Why? The function lever is still a problem and I strongly suggest turning it off. Nothing changed. You can feel free to do whatever you prefer with it though.
I always thought Test Picture was mostly for usage in camera stores when demoing a camera without an SD card.
I use the LCD screen switch all the time. I prefer manual switching between viewfinder and LCD screen.
You will be surprised by how many questions I get on how to turn off the LCD screen.
1. Lightbox
I have found it, but i prefer simply to zoom in and check single shots.
2. Turning off the screen
On M5 Mk III i simply close the LCD. On M10 which has tilting LCD its more useful. I did that once by accident.
BTW M5 Mk III got a very useful firmware update. When the LCD is fully opened (eg. on the left from the camera), eye sensor on EVF is disabled.
3. Depth of field preview
I am oldschool photographer and my vintage Practica LTL 3 has similar feature. On M10 i even changed WB balance button to have this feature, on M5 Mk III Its perfect for portrait prime lenses with narrow DOF.
4. Test Picture
I would not mind keeping the image, mainly if i do reports/party photography. I also keep histogram/EXIF data from the location in this manner, so i can just check the settings and use them in the future.
5. -1 diopter on my left eye, -3 on right :D
Hi Robin.
I find the dioptre wheel on most models, too stiff to turn accurately.
Have you any advice on that please?
Howie
DOF preview is super important. Use it every day! Way to go Olympus
@@Centauri27 also bear in mind the placements of the settings are not the same for all cameras. Olympus changed things a bit in their newer cameras.
@@robinwong True. I got this from my E-M5 Mk III, and it's so logical now! It actually makes sense.
Gute Info von Olympus
I've never used them. I'm first learning the basics coming from Nikon.
Take your time to explore my many other tips on using Olympus videos!
They are good features. Some are essential (DoF, diopter) in my opinion. Others look only useful in very specific situations.
They are in all the cameras you have. Did you even look for them?
Which charger peen is used in Olympus camera please let me know in model Li-42B
That said, I have found the menu systems of other cameras even more arcane.
Until I learned about Super Control Panel, I was very frustrated with the menus. Using SCP I can avoid menus 90% of the time.
Where did Lightbox come from and why wasn't I told before?
@@robinwong Ok Robin. I understand your point. I didn't see the previous video. I just feel that many people do not see this feature.
Lightbox is an amazing feature. Use “OK” to replace the image on the left and use the shutter scroll wheel to compare the new “favorite” image to other.
Thanks Robin!
hey robin! i'd love to have a beer with you when i'm in your part of the world :)
Anybody uses S-OVF to simulate an optical viewfinder?
In iAuto can't use back button focusing. Em5 m² focus staking menu is grey out, any chance getting it to work?
Does any one else call the EFV/LCD switch button the "LOL" button?
1-4 no clue
Glad I can share something new.
Never used test image... 32 GB to 64GB sims, never need it.... I think I played with it on my E-5, once....
Hence, the "unpopular features" is the title. Rarely used. Am I missing something?
Robin Wong Nope you didn’t miss anything... Don’t think I have used any of the others... DOF maybe, once or twice.. lol, Never noticed the light box preview...
