    Notice how Mal was already going up the stairs and really leave Jayne to die. He wasn't bluffing! He only changed his mind because of Jayne showing that he was ashamed of what he did, and so he had to go back down two steps to close the cargo door. He had no intention before of closing it at the last second while walking past it.

      This was exactly what I was going to comment on. Only at the end was Jayne feeling genuine remorse. Not only that but Jayne was done begging and accepted his fate. That combo of feelings saved Jayne's life.

      @anonymes2884 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, that wasn't a "stern warning" as these reactors seem to think, that was the execution of a traitor right up until Jayne showed that he cared about what the rest of the crew thought of him.
      I think Mal sees Jayne as kind of like a big, dumb, dangerous dog that he doesn't fully trust. Some dogs just can't be socialised (usually because of abuse but that's by the by) and sadly those you have to put down, they can never be trusted around people. But some dogs, even after they've bitten you once, can be made to understand it was wrong and be trusted not to do it again. Jayne showed that he _might_ be the second kind of dog and that saved his life (no spoilers but it's actually a nice little bit of foreshadowing for the next episode).

      @@anonymes2884 Agreed. Mal knows all too well how the harsh society can produce someone like Jayne. Your "big, dumb, dangerous dog" analogy fits well.

    The thing to truly understand is that Mal was 0% bluffing. He sentenced Jayne to die and meant it the whole way. He wasn't feeling him out, he wasn't testing him, he wasn't scaring him straight. He and Jayne agreed when this day came it would be an "interesting day", and that's how the day was going to end. Jayne lived because he showed shame, and showed it *after* accepting he'd die for what he did. That's why Mal spared him.

    • @albertmeier2425

      It wasn't the shame that changed Mal's mind. Jayne realized he actually cared about the crew, even Simon and River. Mal realized Jayne's heart is there. He's rough and crude and not entirely reliable, but he's part of the family and Jayne values that deep down.

      @@albertmeier2425 I agree with you. Jayne always showed himself to be an unrepentant scoundrel, and he didn't care who knew it. But he genuinely cares about the people on Serenity. So he actually cares about what they think, and he wants them to think well of him. I've even heard people argue that him trying to get Simon and River removed was for the benefit of the crew. Which makes sense if you think about how unpredictable River is.

    The part Wash looks at and casually throughs away in the junkyard is the all-important part ( catalyzer ) that they needed in "Out of Gas".

  • @JakkFrost1
    @JakkFrost1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    What you may have missed: her amigdala was completely removed, meaning she can't NOT feel negative emotions and experiences. Now multiply that by all the minds that might be open books to her at any given time, the telepathic rock and roll concert that she literally can't tune out, especially on a densely populated planet like Ariel.
    That's why, whether Simon realized it or not, being on Serenity was good for her. A minimal number of other minds nearby, especially way out in "the black". Some powerful personalities on board, but still, for the most part, her mind can finally snatch some moments of... serenity.

    I love this episode. Especially that scene at the end between Mal and Jane.
    You could feel the emotion.
    It was also a great tie-in to an earlier episode where Mal asked Jane why he didn't turn on him.
    To which Jane said "the money wasn't good enough."
    Mal: "What happens when it is?"
    Jane: "Well that would be a real interesting day."
    Great writing.
    Also, those medical pods look oddly exactly like the Thule Cargo carrier on my car.

      There's also a shot way back, in the pilot, maybe, where Nathan grabs her and hugs her. It wasn't scripted- Nathan threw it in in one of the takes, improvised, and it was SO right, Joss kept it in. Mal loves Kaylee, big brother style. As do we all...
