    I'm Korean, and we call hilary "ice princess" because her interpretations are so noble, and so on point that it almost feels unreachable. It's the kind of the feeling you feel from elsa at frozen 1, without any means of insult but with absolute admirazation.
    + In Korea, grandma usually calls their grandaughter "my princess" so yeah. We rather think queen as a demanding person than princess.

They are incredible and I am definitely their fan!
    On a side note, why doesn't Hilary look like she's 40 (and a mother of two at that) at all? I mean, all I see is a very sweet 27-year-old incredibly talented musician. What is up with that?!

    • @manan-543
      @manan-543 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Maybe she got lucky with her genes as pointed out before. A big part of how you age depends on your genes. The other important things is lifestyle and the environment around you. I don't know her personally so I can just assume. Sleeping well, drinking a lot of water, taking care of your skin, exercising helps a lot and I think she does it. But I think the main part is her passion for music. The position she is in right now and the way she plays shows she has immense passion for the violin and music. That in reduces stress in daily life as you love what you do which makes you look young. Also I think she had to stay indoors for long periods of time in her youth so that she can practice. Reduced exposure to the sun also helps.

    I really hope twoset always keeps this video online because i come back to it so often.
    It is such a calm, honest conversation, something so simple yet so rare to find.
    What i love most about is how they all truely listen to each other. Many interviews even if they have good questions still get spoiled when the person interviewed has no time to answer in more than one sentence. So i really appreciate the fact that all three of them gave each other a lot of time for long, thoughtful answers and they asked follow up questions instead of just nodding and moving on to the next subject.
    It's also a great and rare pleasure that they left the video as long as it is and gave as not only snippets but the whole conversation. I love everything about it!

    FYI, typically in Korean culture being called a princess is actually a compliment. For example, a similar pet name was also given to Kim Yuna, Korea’s pride in the Olympic Ice Skating.
    It’s a term of endearment used to depict someone who is chic, commands charisma and strength, and professionalism in their field. So, contextually I’d say, Hillary wouldn’t have to worry about what they’re saying about her heh. Cheers!

    just to clarify so Hilary can stop worrying, in Korean culture, "Ice Princess" isn't used in a negative way. People very commonly use such titles for idols and other celebrity status people, usually performers to describe someone who is very poised and has a regal vibe, almost aristocratic air about them if you will. It's supposed to be a great compliment since they're saying that you exude charisma and project a mature, confident and serious image of yourself.

    When I went to your concert in Chicago, like Eddy said, I didn't really have an expectation of what you would be doing. I knew a couple of things that would probably happen, but I was very happy with the mix of playing vs. comedy vs. slapstick vs. serious. It was like a perfect balance. And if I had to pick a single word to describe your show, it would be "charming". When the concert ended, we were left with a wonderful sensation that lasted a couple of days. 16:30 Fun fact: The legend of the brown M&Ms started in the 1980s when rock band Van Halen would use it as a test to see if the promoter had actually read the contract. As they were touring with enormous, heavy lighting rigs that had to be set up safely and properly, they needed to ensure instructions were being followed down to the smallest detail, so they included a clause "M&M's (WARNING: ABSOLUTELY NO BROWN ONES)." If they arrived at the venue and saw brown M&M's in the bowl, it was cause for a thorough safety check.

    Reading some of these comments reminds me that there’s still an “elitism” surrounding violin or classical music. How some describe Hillary Hahn as this beautiful goddess and degrade TwoSet because “these jokes” don’t “deserve to be next to Hillary Hahn” really just convicts and proves my rhetoric that this elitism surrounding classical music is disgusting. I do art too and agree. You can't deny that there are people who are just better than you at a young af age. I had a friend same age as me who had more stable hand and didn't need to erase a lot to get a good drawing, like she could just get the right shapes on the first try. We made comics together from 7-10 and she was always correcting my human anatomy/angles. In the end I'd tell her what I want my character to do, and she'd draw it out because I'd mess up the pages with all my erasing and smudges >_>
      BUT I see people on art subreddits being like "1 year ago vs now!" and PRACTICE REALLY DOES WONDERS because they're able to draw so well within a year. And you know damn well those people are going to start having people ask them how they draw so well. "PRACTICE!!"

      This is a huge point and I’m glad you brought it up. This is why I love twoset. They really put in the work and they’re pulling back the curtains on what it takes to produce their art.
      Thank you for adding your perspective on making visual art.
      It frustrates me to think of people who don’t do art or make music who see something simple (or seemingly simple) and say “I could have done that” or “anyone could have made that”. Yeah, but you didn’t. That’s the difference.

    • @ramywiles
      @ramywiles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@fenestrapain Exactly -- part of the point is that it's supposed to seem effortless, but the keyword is "seem". There is a TON of effort that goes into visual and performing arts that people don't see, and so people who don't create or perform have a distorted view of how much time and practice it really takes to be good, or even just competent.

    Ice princess is not negative at all in the Korean context. It's been used several times for other female celebrities as well. It's more like a title for certain people who give out a certain vibe, specifically someone who they feel like is very poised, regal, flawless amongst other things, but definitely not something negative.

    • @Ysmir.
      @Ysmir. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      you can say poised and regal if you wanna be positive or stuck up if you wanna be negative but it still represents the same idea. ice generally represents cold and distant, no matter what country you're in. she's not seeing herself like that which is why she's trying to change that. that's the impression I got from her words

      @@Ysmir. I kind of agree with you, but I have to say that it is truly different in some East Asian cultures- especially Korea, China, and Japan. The concept of an "ice queen/king" being associated with composure, confidence, poise, regality, etc. is an almost unequivocally positive and desirable trait in those cultures. Dignity and discipline are traditionally considered some of the most admirable attributes. That being said, more libertarian Western culture may interpret those same traits negatively as coldness or aloofness, and that is valid- but that is almost certainly not the case in Asia. When they call her "the ice princess", it's quite certainly a compliment.

      @@Ysmir. I see what you mean and that's totally fair. If that's not the image she was trying to project, or if she feels that it doesn't reflect her true character, then I wouldn't blame her at all for wanting to change that perception. It's obvious from her open and down-to-earth personality here that she isn't actually an "icy" person. It's interesting how she described her character changing when she performs, becoming more intense and focused. I follow some well-known dancers and they've said similar things. Some of them are super cheerful and goofy in person, but in performances they shift into a different mode and appear totally fierce and intimidating.

I'm happy that i've seen this conversation where you are very honest about your work, this showed me one more time that you are worthy of our time. Thank you.

    Finally watched this whole thing. So the takeaways I get are:
    "Practice" for people like Hilary is different than "practice" for us mere mortals. We "practice" trying to get the notes right, trying to get the tempo under control, and getting1';1 the dynamics and phrasing more or less according to what the score says. With Hilary and other virtuosos, they get all that down in probably a day or two, or even sight-reading. From there, "practice" becomes more like "experimentation." How loud should you get when the score says "forte"? How soft when it says "piano"? And what are the degrees of "forte" you can play in comparison to the degree of "piano"? How do you begin a phrase? And end it?
    She says when she gets "goose bumps" during a performance, but it doesn't happen every time, and it's only when you've prepared for all those possibilities that you're going to get it and be able to maintain it. I've often sensed that virtuoso performers are essentially searching when they play, seaching for a sound that seems to fit the music at that particular point in time, and when they find it, they have the technique to maintain that sound and that emotion, until the music transitions to another section and they start the process all over again. Composers like Beethoven make that especially challenging, since his music changes from mood to mood so often. And that's is why going to a live performance is so much more satisfying than simply listening to a recording even if it's a favorite recording by a favorite artist. That spontaneity, and the ability of the musicians to get there, is what makes live music so exciting.
    I'm no virtuoso pianist, but I try to use that approach when I practice, and it's very interesting. I remember once playing the C Minor Bach Partita, opening movement, which opens with an overture, changes to a meditative invention-like section, then finished with a presto. I was playing at a friend's house where there was a lovely, well-regulated piano, and for some reason it just felt good under my hands. So when it came to the presto, I took off, playing much faster than I usually did, but because I'd practiced it a few times at that speed, I thought I could handle it. It wasn't perfect note-wise, but I got all the articulations and voicing that I wanted, much to my pleasure. And my friends definitely noticed.
    Another takeway? Please, please, please, don't talk about pooing on stage while you're eating! I could never get through that part to get to the interesting stuff.

    Hillary! Twoset! The whole Ice Princess perception is an entirely positive thing I assure you. Koreans just love assigning talents a name: Yuna Kim, a prized figure skater, someone who both I and Korea believe to be one if not the best, is dubbed the ice queen.
    It’s not that we’re critiquing your music to be set in such a constrict, but it’s that we hold and revere you to the standard of ‘oh wow her musicianship is so icy and refined and projects an imagine of such royalty.’ This entire ordeal is caused by the culture gap of certain phrasing and context, we love you for exactly who you are and changing how you play should only be judged by the raw principles of what you believe in. So long story short it’s a good thing!

    • @Quotenwagnerianer
      @Quotenwagnerianer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But doesn't occur to you that calling her musicianship "icy" is perhaps not how she wants to be perceived? Cold perfection is not necesarily the standard a musician wants to achieve with the violin. They want to make it speak from the heart. And that is not supposed to be cold.

    • @sophienguyen6218
      @sophienguyen6218 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Quotenwagnerianer This is a completely valid interpretation, I agree with you, but again Yuna Kim: she’s the queen of a sport where a large chuck of the points come from artistry and creativity. I mean, I know it's a tough balance for any working parents, but touring and performing as a world class musician is certainly quite different! I know a lot of people prefer not to speak about their private life, which is cool, but I guess I'm still interested in her experience of motherhood and how it relates to her career. This is an amazing video in which Hilary cuts to the heart of the artistic experience and the transition from student to artist. She also reveals everything one needs to know about her -- she is thoughtful, compassionate, engaged and engaging, warm, respectful, considerate, fun. She is genuine. She is absolutely committed to her art. Bravo TwoSet for providing the context and company which engaged her. No one else in the world could have done it.

    Hello TwoSet Violin! I'm Merve from Turkey. I began to watch your videos like a couple weeks ago and I'm not a musican, i have never touched a instrument before & never listened classical music. But since I have been watching you, i got interested in classical music and i'm even considering playing an instrument! Thanks for opening up a new path for me, thanks for make people discover new things that they approached with prejudice before.
    The first time I listened Hillary Hahn, i'm thunderstruck. I really don't know the terminology but I feel like I was being witness of something holy or extraterrestrial. And after that, I immediately clicked on this video and your conversation gave me so much to think on, so much to apply in my life, in my thinking processes and like I said, I'm not even a musician! Those things she said about practicing, the flow, not pushing or not holding back yourself... I'm amazed and I learned so much. Thank you again and thousands times for what you are doing!
    Sorry for my grammatical mistakes or choices of wrong words, my English is not that good. And sorry for that long comment... And the last thing: For your next world tour, please consider coming to Istanbul-Turkey. We might be in a bad shape as a country but there's still some great people who appreciate classical music.
    I hope everything you wish becomes true. Have a nice day!

      This is a wonderful comment, and this is what music is all about; finding what people have in common, and exploring how to approach life. I am sorry I didn't see this earlier. And your English does not require any apology.

      I tried to learn violin after hearing Heifitz playing the Tchikovski and Mendelsohn concertos - after 6 months I realized I would never come close to sounding like him, and I switched to clarinet and eventually singing
