  • In this video I'll show you how to create your own image and then use that image to deploy session hosts for Azure Virtual Desktop.

Hello good people of TH-cam! May I point you to a better way to create images for AVD?
Custom Image Templates makes this process a lot easier, check out my new video on it here: th-cam.com/video/o3A9J7CbCyA/w-d-xo.html

Jesus, this is so much more straightforward than trying to follow the incoherent trail of documentation from Microsoft. Thank you for saving me numerous hours and a few blood pressure spikes.

      I aim to please ;)
Also, make sure to consider Custom Image Templates if you're making custom images for AVD. I posted a video on it last week: th-cam.com/video/o3A9J7CbCyA/w-d-xo.html

@@PetterTech Well that is twice now you have saved me a ton of time. It's nice for one of our use cases to know how to do this style of image capture, but it is also VERY nice to know the other way in the video you linked. Thanks again!

    Hi Petter,
This video is a fantastic resource for learners like who are just starting with custom imaging for AVD.
Thank you so much and keep creating videos like this and keep doing the great work.
    regards,
    Ashish Arya

    Awesome 👌🏽 thank you.
I'm planning to set AVD for client and would appreciate youd guidance on it. An end2end AVD/VDI setup video or even a pointer will do. Your this video certainly helped.
    Thanks

Thanks for the feedback, glad the video helped 👍
I have thought about making such a video for a while, but then again my backlog of videos is pretty massive at this point so I don’t think it’ll happen anytime soon I’m afraid :(

    Hi Petter,
Coould you please make videos on how we create Images using Azure Image Builder and Packer for AVD.

Those two specifically or would the new custom image templates feature in AVD be good enough?

@@PetterTech The new custom image template would also be good Petter along with Azure Image builder.

Hey, it doesnt work for AVD. It creates an VDIs from image but they have to be added to Session host pool after that, but there could be problems if you capture an image from AVD thats joined to AzAD

If you follow the steps I take in the video it should work, unless Microsoft has changed things around since I recorded the video.
You have to use the wizard for creating session hosts, or like I did: the create host pool wizard, in order to avoid having to add the session hosts to the pool manually afterwards.
And yes, the source VM should not be joined to any domain when preparing it :)

Hi Petter, I am trying this procedure but when I am deploying session hosts(vms) using my custom image, it fails saying with a status of "conflict" i tried multiple times and made sure trusted launch is selected even in the captured image. Also double checked the generalized option. Can you give me some points I might have missed? Thanks!
    Great video btw

Are you trying to deploy Entra ID/Azure AD joined session hosts or AD joined ones? Reason I ask is that most of the time I get that error is because of authentication errors when trying to join AD.
But it could be caused by a multitude of things really, it feels like the "conflict" error is kind of a catchall message. However, there should be more information in the error if you dig down in it, it's just not always too readable for humans :)

@@PetterTech I tried deploying in both Entra ID and AD, they both fail. with joining AD, it says VMExtensionProvisioningError. whilst on joining Entra ID, I'm getting domain join check failed. been looking for answers for a while now

    • @PetterTech
      @PetterTech  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Do you get the same kind of error with a marketplace image?
Hard for me to say what the reason is, but I would try deploying sessions hosts with non-custom image and if that works I would try to create a new image based on that same non-custom image with no changes (apart from generalization). If that all works then the issue is with something in your initial custom image.
      Hope this helps :)
