This song was my mom's prayer since I was a little girl, she suffered from acute asthma and later developed heart problems. Her prayer was that I get to the age of 12 and the Lord could take her. This year, a day before I turned 35, she passed on from heart failure. I thank God for allowing my mom to have lived 3-fold of what she had asked for from God. Though she had a poor quality of life due to her health, she was a brave heart who put up a fight right until her last breathe. I miss you mai vangu, my heart is broken, I don't know how to deal with you death.

There was blind man who used to live in Entumbane, Bulawayo, a friend both to Paul Matavire and my dad. His blindness was hereditary and his son, Ngoni, was blind too. One day akarohwa nemagetsi very badly, he was paralysed. I would go with my dad kunomuona and sometimes Paul Matavire would be there. The words that Matavire sang are those of the paralysed blind man who used to make a living out of weaving baskets at Jairos Jiri but now couldn't even wash himself. He wished he could survive until his son is able to fend for himself. However all the three, Baba Ngoni, Matavire and my dad have passed. May their souls rest in peace.

This song depicts a profound and sincere prayer expressed through the gift bestowed upon Paul by the same supreme being he is appealing to. A song which evokes strong emotions of sadness and in most cases has the effect or making tears unwittingly stream down one’s face when one ponders the profound message and/or is taken down memory lane of our dearly departed.
This was an answered prayer for Paul Matavire who nearly died following a mysterious illness he suffered years before his actual death.
In my view, this touching song is more about the child than it is about illness or death.
Paul’s lyrical prowess in this song can be summarised as depicting despair, bitterness, acceptance of death as an inevitable fact of life whilst at the same time acknowledging, with awe, God’s supremeness.
Despair: Various efforts he made and exhausted to try and recuperate from his illness but in vain.
Bitterness: Leaving his young and vulnerable child behind
Acceptance: Acknowledges death is inevitable hence he is not scared of dying but leaving behind his child is too ghastly to contemplate.
God’s supremeness: “..mutorei imi mambo, mune simba rokuumba, munoputsa, munoraramisa mugouraya; ahh...” “Ahh” for me is an exclamation that acknowledges how much he is in awe of the Supreme being hence the plea to allow him to raise his child.
This is one of the most touching songs where the artist sings from the heart to reflect on their personal situation. Examples of similar songs are: Kudakwashe (James Chimombe), Handina nharo (Leonard Dembo), Ndiridze mhere (System Tazvida), Zuva rekufa kwangu (John Chibadura) to mention just a few.
Paul Matavire was so gifted and what is also striking about this song are the accompanying powerful melodies which fit very well with the sombre yet very profound carefully arranged prayer. A prayer which cuts accross generations and will never lose relevance.
Rest in peace Paul Matavire. May we all take solace in knowing that no matter how hopeless your situation is, there is a Supreme being who answers our prayers.

Oh yes god l agree to be taken, but l have a request please let me live so my child could grow and be able to fend for himself,or take him before taking me ,in that way l will have peace knowing my child is in better place, who do l leave my child with, he's young and innocent.
Look his mouth is dry,his hungry and lm dying, what will he eat, please god give me strength to provide for him,l agree to die but think of my child.

I remember in 1989 on Sunday morning when the late Admire Taderera hosted an early morning show between 0600 and 0700 on then radio 3 and played this song not once, but twice in a row and then simply said something like, "hayaas" then ended the show. It made me realise how lucky we are sometimes to be raised by both parents until adultwood.

This song is so powerful because Paul matavire had faced the inevitable and could not dodge or run away from death 😢 life is too short and if you are faced with death and you are also a parent to an infant/children it’s extremely hard tablet to swallow. But as Paul puts it you just have to accept and pray for the best. I sang this song over and over the week I was diagnosed with cancer and my child was 3 years old then. Now she is 8 and I’m still praying 🙏🏾..... However every time I listen to this song I am reminded of how powerless we are and that we are on borrowed time, so I enjoy every moment with my child 😇

It talks about a man who was about to die but was afraid to leave behind his vulnerable child. Hence his request to God was for the child to at least die first and he can follow.

In my view, this touching song is more about the child (he speaks about how his child will survive without him) than it is about illness or death.
Examples of similar songs are: Kudakwashe (James Chimombe) and Zuva rekufa kwangu (John Chibadura) to mention just a few.
Paul Matavire was so gifted and what is also striking about this song are the accompanying powerful melodies which fit very well with the sombre yet very profound carefully arranged prayer. A prayer which cuts accross generations and will never lose relevance.

7:38 to 7:50 is the high point of the song. Matavire is both awed at God's might and disgusted at the same time. When he says "Aaah!" you can feel the anguish, dread, anger, confusion and utter submission. In the end he just gives in, utterly spent and exhausted. The human body and mind shouldn't have to absorb all that pain. But it is what it is.

    Chorus 2

Dai ndisina kuzvara handaimbotya makagara mati kunofiwa

Dai ndisina zvibereko kana vhundu rufu rwakagara rwuri pano panyika
(Had i not had fruits of my womb, i wouldnt give a damn, death has been a sad reality ever since)
Zvino kana manditora korusvava rwangu ruchapona neiko
(But not if you take me away, what will save my child [from the earthly troubles])
Muromo wake kushame senyana reshiri tariro yake iri kwandiri
(Like a hachling open its mouth in anticipation of food from the mother, my child's hope is on me)
Ropa ratonhora mambo muzamu hamuchina mukaka nhasi achanweiko
(My blood is getting cold, my breast [food supplies] are drying up)
Muviri wonhuwa rufu zamu rapwa mukaka nhasi achanweiko

    Asi Mwari ndinechichemo hechoko
(But i have a request, there it is)
Tangai mamutora kana mamutora ini ndootevera
(First, take my child, then i will follow thereafter)
Nokuti kuti ndimusiye ndinotya kufadza vane moyo yakaipa
(Because if i am to leave the child behind, i am afraid of pleasing the wicked hearted)
Nokuti kuti ndimusiye ndinoziva nhamo dzinoonekwa nenherera
(I know the challenges faced by orphans, thus why)
Kuti ndiite wekuponda uhhm ndinotya kutongwa nemurawu wekuuraya
(I could murder my child, but uhmm, i am afraid to be judged by your laws which prohibit such)
Mutorei imi mambo mune simba rokuumba, munoputsa munoraramisa mugouraya uhm
(Rather take my child you Oh Lord because you have the power to make, destroy, give life and take it away) Uhmmm

This song makes me cry. I lost my mother in November 2019 after a long battle with heart problem. Then I was not working in the country and had last spent time with her in April 2019. I could not go home sooner and she was deteriorating gradually. Each time I phoned she asked mwana hangu when are you coming. In my heart I felt she was waiting for me. A week when I told her that I was coming she said I happy that you are coming. Another hiccup happened and she could not wait any more she passed away 4 days after the date I was supposed to arrive home.
My heart bleeds every day. We could not both see each other for the last time.
My mother was my life and my joy. I thank God for all the years he gave her the Grace to live a longer life till she quietly passed on. MHSRIP
