I'd like to see an episode like this that uses the ROBOTECH novelization's timeline to explain the rise of the ROBOTEECH Masters to the end of the ROBOTECH series.I'd really like to see some of the events described in the books, but never seen in the original series show up in the episode.

I appreciate your good intentions, but just cutting down this movie's flashback sequences only trims off a portion of what's truly wrong with it. Yes, the 3 minutes of new animated footage was really nice and the added old footage of Lancer's interview was fine, but as a whole the film doesn't offer up anything new to the story at all, nor does it introduce anything for future Robotech projects. The new footage in the beginning is just a re-animated interpretation of Lancer's crash-landing on Earth which already been told in the New Generation series and analyzed (in far better detail) in the Robotech: Invasion comics. Even the footage of Dana Sterling and pockets of the surviving Southern Cross troops fleeing Earth is also part of the novels and current comic canon of the series. The one thing, the ONLY thing, new that this movie brought forward was that Lancer and Sera got together.....That's it. Of course, what's really mind-boggling is the fact that even though this film was made in 2013, 6 years after Shadow Chronicles was made, Love Live Alive completely ignores SC's retconning of the New Generation Ending which airbrushes Lunk, Annie, Rand, Rook, and even Lancer and Sera out of the story just so we could focus on Scott and Ariel wrapping it up on their own...So even if you want to accept Love Live Alive as official canon, you can't, because Shadow Chronicles says that NONE OF IT HAPPENED. And the fact that LLA has a "next episode" presentation of Shadow Chronicles at the end of it's credits like the two projects are completely in-sync with one another is just one big poorly contrived joke. It's obvious that Love Live Alive was just a hastily made cash-grab and an attempt to shut fans up about new animated Robotech material. What's even more insulting is that Tommy Yune and Kevin Mckeever are STILL promoting this movie as an original and fulfilling movie experience. Even when Mckeever was approached at the 2014 NY Comicon Robotech panel by a concerned fan about the poor response to Love Live Alive, he simply states that he doesn't 'understand' what problem there is with the movie and that Lions Gate informs them that the movie is one of their best-selling DVDs and further retorts that it actually "brought in new fans" to the fanbase. So pretty much "Yeah, nothing wrong here, we got your money, so nothing else matters". They spent two and half years promoting this thing like an all-new original movie, showcased little else but the new footage and getting everyone excited, and pocketed the money they gained from the hype. All the while still pretending like they accomplished something with this.
Onomatopoeia001 No, it's not ground rbeaking or the next amazing step in the Robotech franchise, but why the hell does it need to be? It's a short stand alone film diving into Lancer's phyce and how his life went after the war. There's a bitter sweet reunion, and we get a bridge into the supposed 'Shadow' sequel. The new footage is meant to be a new step in the direction of making new products, and shows very good animation and a great grasp of the atmosphere, even if that is something that we have seen in other mediums. Yeah, I'd love to have seen it just be an animated version of the fantastic 'Invasion' comics, but that's not viable nor the idea that Carl had in mind. Furthermore, the end is also beautifully done and an amazing piece of atmosphere. Also the suggestion here is that the cast of the NG (but lancer) will appear in the SR, so in away it's hinting at the activities between the films. There's a lot of little things that show great care and intelligence, you just have to be rational enough to care to notice. "Cashgrab" is a huge overstep. What they could do based off of time restraints and deadlines was impressive, and I'm sure that what will come after the Sony film will be a new step in a brighter direction.
Robotech Motion Comics *"No, it's not ground breaking or the next amazing step in the Robotech franchise, but why the hell does it need to be? It's a short stand alone film diving into Lancer's phyce and how his life went after the war. There's a bitter sweet reunion, and we get a bridge into the supposed 'Shadow' sequel. "* I never said it had to be 'groundbreaking' or 'amazing'. but as a newly installed movie/prequel/sequel to the series (especially since it overshadowed the development of Shadow Rising - no pun intended) it should have something new to bring to the table. This is especially true with how Mckeever and company have been advertising the film at conventions and abroad; We were told it would answer what happened to the other characters in the series, that it would help pave new storylines for the Shadow series, gain new insight on Lancer's experience during the Invid war, and manage to tell an all-new original story ("a powerful story" as Tommy Yune put it). Not to mention it states in the trailer that this movie was to be "the next dramatic chapter in the Robotech saga". Love Live Alive fails to accomplish any of these. It fails as a prequel to Shadow Chronicles because it tries to say the New Generation ending is still valid, when Shadow Chronicles completely rewrites it. So anything Lancer recounts on the final Invid battle and everything he discovered about the Invid with meeting the Regis never existed. Furthermore there's no longer any evidence that Lunk, Annie, Rook, and Rand were ever apart of the fighting. Shadow Chronicles glosses over them completely, further contradicting Lancer's recap of the events. There's also no longer any evidence of the scene where Sera and Lancer are fighting off the Expeditonary Forces in the hive and Sera asks him about their races ever falling in love with one another, which happens to be a further nudge into their relationship. We even still clearly see Gunther Reinhardt die, along with the destruction of the SDF-4 when they are both untouched, with Gunther very much alive in SC. There's no bridge with Shadow Chronicles or Shadow Rising at all. It fails as a backstory to the other characters because it never sheds any light about them. Yes, they show up for a small reunion in the end, but that's all we get. They never talk about what they're doing or where they're going, they just have very small idle chit-chat (I believe just 8 seconds of dialogue). The only person we get any trace of insight on is Scott where he tells Lancer about the expedition to find the missing SDF-3. However, this too, contradicts with Shadow Chronicles because Shadow Chronicles ended with Scott and the crew of the Ark Angel space folding into regions unknown to look for Rick Hunter and his Space Fortress. Scott doesn't even know about the SDF-3's disappearance until near the end of SC, so why is he back on Earth in Love Live Alive telling Lancer about events that have yet to happen?...Or why has he magically appeared from the Arch Angel? He's supposed to be in deep space (along with Ariel I might add, who is also present in Love Live Alive). Finally, it fails as an epilogue story for Lancer and as an original story on it's own because all we have on Lancer is that he still sings and lives a quiet life with Sera, and the story itself is just Lancer retelling the New Generation story word-for-word. He doesn't give any real insight on what he really feels about anything in the flashbacks, he just sums the people and events. The only moment where we actually delve into even a portion of Lancer's psyche is when his interviewer, Kay, asks him about his love life and what his relationship with Sera is and how he states that he's "immune to love" because of his evasive nature with the women he meets in the series. Again, this is all to help reveal that Lancer and Sera are a couple in the end. I don't see why we needed an entire movie to tell us this. *"The new footage is meant to be a new step in the direction of making new products, and shows very good animation and a great grasp of the atmosphere, even if that is something that we have seen in other mediums."* If the whole point of the new footage was just to be a "trailer" for the quality of products to come why not just use this footage for that very purpose: a trailer. Then focus on said future projects instead of this movie? In fact, most of the new footage was already featured AS a trailer to everyone at cons and on youtube, so the movie's main highlights were already spoiled from the get-go anyway, making this film even more useless. And yes, I've already mentioned that I find the new footage rather nice to look at, but again, the fact that we already know all of what's happening in the footage pretty much diminishes the excitement and impact of the movie as a whole, especially since that's all what the new footage is used for. If you are going to use new materials to 'wow' people at least give them something they've never seen before. *"Yeah, I'd love to have seen it just be an animated version of the fantastic 'Invasion' comics, but that's not viable nor the idea that Carl had in mind."* I didn't say I wanted this to be an animated version of Robotech Invasion. I was simply pointing out that this movie is doing a terrible job at digging deeper into Lancer's character on his adventures in New Generation and that another series of stories did it way better. If this was trying to be a new story or wanted to shed new light on Lancer, then it should be able to offer up what Invasion could not or at least tell a story as deeply as the comics did, not just copy and paste what the television show already told us. Also, what exactly do you mean that it is not the "idea Carl had in mind"? All the information I've heard and gathered are from Steve and Tommy Yune, (from the Making Of feature as well) who say that Carl simply wanted to bring Mospeada Love Live Alive to the US since 1985, at first as a direct translation, then later as a movie that used clips from the OVA with new footage added in. As to what direction as far as story is concerned is all vague and inconclusive. But according to the synopsis and Tommy Yune, the story is supposed to focus on Lancer as his point-of-view of the events of series, which is what Invasion did also. Could you be a little more specific? *"Furthermore, the end is also beautifully done and an amazing piece of atmosphere."* The end just shows what I've been pointing out: Lancer hooked up with Sera. It's a nice ending for Lancer, I guess, but seriously, why did we need over an hours worth of flashbacks and irrelevant new footage to show us this? I mean, I guess them having a child means a new character in the near future, but that's an incredibly long way away from working that into the story, especially if we're trying to continue the series with Scott, Ariel, Vince Grant, and hopefully, Rick Hunter. *"Also the suggestion here is that the cast of the NG (but lancer) will appear in the SR, so in away it's hinting at the activities between the films."* Yeah, but how does that clear up the inconsistencies I've stated above? The whole thing feels really misplaced. *"There's a lot of little things that show great care and intelligence, you just have to be rational enough to care to notice."* Excuse me, but I never insulted your intelligence in my previous comment, nor am I doing so with this one, so I would deeply appreciate it if you didn't insult mine and can keep this conversation civil. I've seen and own the entire Robotech series, I've read the comics and novels, I love the lore and universe of this series. I do care. I also care a lot about continuity and consistency with the stories I read and watch, and I feel that Love Live Alive just a botched mess in both story and it's role in the current canon. *"Cashgrab" is a huge overstep."* 'Cashgrab' is what it looks and feels like to me and a good portion of fans. They diverted us away from Shadow Rising to show us Love Live Alive; They boasted claims of a new story, shedding light on events that had not been seen, and giving us a look through Lancer's eyes in the New Generation conflict. It looked really exciting, and the footage being shown was actually pretty nice. Then the movie comes, out, everybody buys it, only to find out that the new footage they've been seeing was all there was to the movie, with just stock clips and little in the way of any storystelling to attempt to fill in the rest. No doubt it sold well because of the immense hype. Hell, some fans I talked with actually thought Dana Sterling was going to play a key role in the movie because she was in the intro. Now that it's a financial 'success' they can claim whatever they want to about it, including the bogus notion that new fans were herded into the fandom because of it's existence. *"What they could do based off of time restraints and deadlines was impressive, and I'm sure that what will come after the Sony film will be a new step in a brighter direction."* It took them 6 years (5 years relatively) to make 3 minutes of footage and re-editing clips together with new audio. I wouldn't exactly call that much of an achievement. In fact, it's quite startling coming from a wealthy company like Harmony Gold. It's hard enough for them to get stories off the ground as it is, and Love Live Alive shows that they're only getting worse. As for the live-action film, that all remains to be seen. We're still waiting on a finished script and it hasn't even begun shooting yet. We're likely looking at an extra 2 to 3 years of development before we get anything solid. Until then, it's back to continued hiatus on animated Robotech projects and nothing left for Harmony Gold to do but wait and sell toys.
Sorry about that last comment. I get so swept into trying to make my sentences sound nice and 'reviewey' that I forget that I'm being a dick sometimes. I also can agree that the production of Robotech material in the past many years has been very disappointing, but I point more to the rapid whirlwind of the market than the actual team. A huge issue is that projects are constantly started and stopped a restarted, and this is a huge issue as the team apparently tries to focus on one project at a time as to not half-ass different things and to keep a hold on the franchise. They work on the Live-action movie with WB for a certain amount of time, and then WB suddenly stops caring about the project and they have to stop. All the while, they try to work on a new series pitch with Carl because companies have voiced an interest in it. Then the anime marked switches to an online basis, most shows and movies switch to CGI. Suddenly it's a much harder market. They make LLA just so they can finish SOMETHING and they can release it on the rerelease of 'Shadow 1.' And then they start to try and get an online company to pick up 'Academy.' Suddenly the movie is on the table again, and with a company that I think can pull it off. Now that's the main force of it all. If that gets cancelled far into production, then all that work has gone to nothing, and to the fans Harmony Gold has wasted ten years doing absolutely nothing. That's sad, but I'm still hopeful that if they can get one of those projects off the ground. I do not think of LLA as one of those projects. I see it as a DVD extra, and I'm sure that at some point in production that was what it was meant to be. Much like that Public Service Announcement they did. A hint of what they can do, but not 'the next big thing.' Sometimes they did seem to talk about it like this, but sometimes they did overhype it. Your take on the entirety of 'the New Generation' not being canon is a unique one - I've been aware of the opening scenes of the Shadow Chronicles not including the team, but that's just one of those plot lines that I've always known people to ignore, like the fact that no one noticed that 'Zor Prime' has the same name as 'Zor' when they mention him all the time, the moulds, or the whole 'SDF-2' thing. Personally, I think that if you cut those scenes the movie would almost have worked as well. Introduce Scott and Ariel separately, those new to the movie are introduced on the ship, and those who did watch it get the connection. The "connection" is the underlining hints given in the dialogue. Scott isn't telling Lancer about the SDF-1 and the trip, he's inviting him to come, suggesting that he's looking for people to join in in the mission on the Ark Angel, and that some of the New Gen team might be joining, thus would be in the movie. My guess is that Rook and Rand will be in the sequel. Lunk and Annie are less likely. In this way, it does sort of serve as a bridge between the two films. When I referred to liking the ending, I mainly meant the scenes of Lancer driving around, which was a very lovely sequence. The scenes with Lancer and Sera is a nice little ending, but it is sort of ruined by the concert appearance by her (which is confusing as I recall her being in Invid uniform). Like I said, it's not the epic masterpiece that some listings and conventions promised it to be, but as a bookend for one character in the story and a little bonus for the whole arc, it's not that bad. Personally, I would have cut most of the flashbacks, gona ahead and kept the concert theme going, and occasionally have new flashbacks to his experience. No narration, no analysis looped over the same ten seconds of footage, just let the story tell itself. I'm actually a little bit excited for the LA movie. I feel like Sony is a good choice to make it, as they got right with 'The Amazing Spiderman 2' what most would have gotten wrong. ASM2 wasn't amazing, but the romance was believable and they did have good characters. Any other company would either try and suck the emotion and colors out of it (Man of Steel) or have characters that feel like they're in the wrong movie and aren't realistic or interesting (Transformers). I also appreciate the the creators do seem to appreciate the larger universe of the series. If done right, with a cast not terrible, they could make a successful movie franchise and possibly revitalize the animated franchise. Maybe then we might get Academy, or Shadow Rising. We'll have to see.

demoskunk There's a reason that they couldn't - sound effect machines were the norm for generating effects at that time, as as time went on the machines were replaced or stopped working. To remaster it in stereo, they had to replace the sounds. I would argue that the Mecha sounds are fine, transformations might even be better, but I do find myself groaning at other decisions, like using a car crash for a table smashing or a metal noise for a hand-on-the-shoulder.
I realize they had to generate new sounds for a Dolby 5.1 or stereo remaster, but it's not worth it my opinion. The original mecha and tranformation sounds are great and iconic. The new ones are just generic and amateurish with way too many wooshing sounds for every little thing.

I never said it had to be 'groundbreaking' or 'amazing'. but as a newly installed movie/prequel/sequel to the series (especially since it overshadowed the development of Shadow Rising - no pun intended) it should have something new to bring to the table.
*"The new footage is meant to be a new step in the direction of making new products, and shows very good animation and a great grasp of the atmosphere, even if that is something that we have seen in other mediums."*
If the whole point of the new footage was just to be a "trailer" for the quality of products to come why not just use this footage for that very purpose: a trailer.
*"Yeah, I'd love to have seen it just be an animated version of the fantastic 'Invasion' comics, but that's not viable nor the idea that Carl had in mind."*
I didn't say I wanted this to be an animated version of Robotech Invasion.
*"Furthermore, the end is also beautifully done and an amazing piece of atmosphere."*
The end just shows what I've been pointing out: Lancer hooked up with Sera.
*"Also the suggestion here is that the cast of the NG (but lancer) will appear in the SR, so in away it's hinting at the activities between the films."*
Yeah, but how does that clear up the inconsistencies I've stated above? The whole thing feels really misplaced.
*"There's a lot of little things that show great care and intelligence, you just have to be rational enough to care to notice."*
Excuse me, but I never insulted your intelligence in my previous comment, nor am I doing so with this one, so I would deeply appreciate it if you didn't insult mine and can keep this conversation civil. I've seen and own the entire Robotech series, I've read the comics and novels, I love the lore and universe of this series. I do care. I also care a lot about continuity and consistency with the stories I read and watch, and I feel that Love Live Alive just a botched mess in both story and it's role in the current canon.
*"Cashgrab" is a huge overstep."*
'Cashgrab' is what it looks and feels like to me and a good portion of fans.
*"What they could do based off of time restraints and deadlines was impressive, and I'm sure that what will come after the Sony film will be a new step in a brighter direction."*
It took them 6 years (5 years relatively) to make 3 minutes of footage and re-editing clips together with new audio.
Robotech Motion Comics Can I ask why you deleted my response to your last statement? I have said nothing in it that was in any way insulting or demeaning to you. I was under the impression we were just having a conversation, but if you didn't want to continue on with the discussion any further you could've just said so in your post and I would have gladly stopped right then and there.
Onomatopoeia001 Huh? I did no such thing. I haven't heard from you in a while. Are you sure that your comment posted?
Harmony Gold's new sound effects really suck! They should've kept the original sounds of the vehicles, thrusters, explosions, guns, etc.
demoskunk There's a reason that they couldn't - sound effect machines were the norm for generating effects at that time, as as time went on the machines were replaced or stopped working.
The new ones are just generic and amateurish with way too many wooshing sounds for every little thing.
that is the main reason i archive thoes efects, from varios shows
I like robothe
What is original name of anime? I wan't to see what harmony gold change
The original anime in Genesis Climber Mospeada, and after watching it all the way through I can say that it is pretty damn decent. I like what robotech did with certain characters more though.
I assume this is just the new footage ey?
bloody cactus Nope. :)
no i mean as in the footage they made for the episode. they made new footage apparently according to wiki
bloody cactus The new footage can be noted 1:30 to 8:00. I cut none of it.

Protoculture are humans, not a flowery fuel. Everything in Mospeada (Next Generation) runs on liquified hydrogen (HBT) Belmont, not Lancer or Dancer. Stik, not Stig. Erose, not Emrose or Etrose. Ray, Jim, mint
Yes we get that Robotech and Macross and even Mospeada are different projects. Good for you for pointing out the obvious.
And space wars can be consistently won by cute anatomically incorrect large eyed cute teenage girls, the power of screaming at the controls and positivism. Just trying to see what you mean.
so weird
Almost forgot how shitty the animation was.
i remember reading DEl ray books and mckinney or something but ZOR was a good guy and the invid flower of life , well protoculture is every where now CULTURE !!! Nothing new from harmony gold ....just crappy repackageing its time is past like Neon genesis evangelion!! or Claymore !! EVEN GANTZ is old news~!!
