As you were clearing the walkway, I began thinking of hundreds of years ago when a Victorian or Saxon family were clearing their land and accidentally lost a broach or button or money while on their hands and knees! Imagine the thoughts and excitement of future mudlarkers treasure hunters finding one or two of your 21st century buttons or anything actually. I love your videos and remain amazed at the work and beauty you two put in to you life!

The work your doing on the garden pathways and flower beds are coming on well.
What a shame for the poor hen. Grabbed from her sleep like that by the badger. Its so sad she died. Thats nature for you though. They all get hungry and will do what they have to to survive. I hope the lights will help disturb their foraging round the chicken coupe.
The mice you have are a lot bigger than the ones we have here. I like that you set them free. Every thing has its place. In the house is not one of them.

Badgers are so smart and strong. Here in the US they team up with Coyotes and the badgers dig out one side and the coyote waits at the other holes for prairie dogs or other ground animals to come out. That way they usually both eventually get a meal.

we had a raccoon eating the fish from our pond. I put some of those solar lights with motion detectors up figuring once they got triggered, it would scare the raccoon away. Even cleaning up the back porch closet type area. I really like the mudlark collections and how you set up your collection for presentation . I recommend adding a guard dog to your family. One that is well known for protecting both the other animals at the farm as well as the two-legged family. My all time favorite all round guard dog is the Great Pyrenees Mountain Dog. Yes, they are BIG dogs but, actually eat less than a German Shepard. (I've had several of both breeds) IMO, They have been breed for so many many years to independently be on their own, up in the Pyrenees Mountains, guarding sheep and other farm animals and have adapted to eat what ever they are able to forage, causing them to be very low maintenance when it comes to calorie intake. Not that I like the idea of it, it's just how it is.
I have had several Pyrenees guard dogs over the years. Both those that are more adapted to being a "house dog", as well as those that have bonded with the animal herd they are in charge of keeping safe.
There is basically NOTHING these dogs won't subject themselves to, to keep their charges safe.
Over in Canada where I lived for 5 yrs, off grid, we had 7 Great Pyrenees dogs guarding our animals, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks etc.
I recommend getting at least 2 dogs, as it is easier for them to work as a team. One stays with the herd/animals, keeping them safe and the other takes off after whatever animal is intent on causing harm.
Since you don't have the large predators in Scotland, such as the wolves, bears, big cats and other that we have in Canada, I can't see why you would need more than 2 dogs. You will however need to socialize them and love on them as well, since they do need to be able to be handled if needed. Plus, they do love the love and attention, as most every animal does and once you have gained their love in return, there's nothing they won't do to protect you.
It was so sweet and wonderful watching especially the sheep/goats when the dogs were with them. Those big dogs would lay down in the middle of the sheep flock and the lambs/kids would be jumping all over them and also laying down to sleep on top of the big fluffy white dogs. Properly bonded with their charges, they will not harm any of them.
Downside of having Pyr's? You do need a good quality fence/net about 5 - 6" high. As 99.9% of these dogs, tend to want to roam and if you don't have neighbors that accept that, it can be a pain... One VERY good thing about Pyr's is, that if you do have a good fence, which you have closed EVERY escape route... Don't worry, the Pyr's will let you know exactly where the escape routes are... LOL It took me a whole summer to Pyr proof our fence but, once it is Pyr proof, NO animal will ever be able to get through that fence, unless they climb over it... 😂
One more reason why I love the Great Pyrenees dogs is that amongst all of these large herd guarding dogs, the Pyr is the most calm one. Of course, individuals can differ but on a whole, a Pyr will usually NEVER use more force than what is required and will do everything to chase off whatever, before using more "force".

Although you're quite privileged, you're not afraid to get your hands dirty. Love your videos x

@ronald8136 Yeah, I'd like to know what is meant by "privileged" too.

If they were privileged they would be getting people in to do everything.

Relocating rodents I get, as long as it's far enough away to keep them from coming back and not some place where they'll become a neighbor's problem. Intentionally feeding them though? Not a hope in heck.

Put some screws in a board and place them under the fence to the chicken pen all around, that should help with the badger digging or cattle panel or spike or Aluminum pie pans hanging on the chicken wire, it makes noise, should help. Raccoons, Opossums, foxes, coyotes reek havic sometimes , and ground hogs are the bad critters...sorry about the chicken, it's always sad when you lose a good layer. ❤...good job Alex, show that badger no fear hun! 😊
