  • This is such a cool 80s story. The band the Hooters formed in 1980. they released an album independently and then took some time off when two of their principal members were hand picked to work on the 1984 blockbuster album Cyndi Lauper’s She’s So Unusual including helping with Girls Just Wanna have Fun and co-write the 1984 #1 hit Time After Time. Then they were signed by Columbia Records and released the 1985 2 X platinum album Nervous Night that had 3 big hits including the classic 80s anthem And We Danced plus Day by Day. They opened live aid and were killing it in 85 and 86 and then they disappeared out of the limelight in the US only to hit it big in europe and come back in the 90s writing another monumental hit One of Us for Joan Osborne. In an exclusive interview, principle members Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian tell the story next.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If your memories of superheroes come from actually comic books and Saturday morning cartoons and not movies you’ll identify with channel. There you’ll find an additional catalog of exclusive content and you can even become an honorary producer to help us curate this music history.
It’s time for another edition of our show revelations where featured artists share rare stories behind their greatest songs and albums. Insight you won’t find anywhere else.
today we are talking to the 2 principle member of a band who’s name has been deeply misunderstood. 80s band the Hooters were actually named after an instrument they used a lot in their band… the melodica. Not owls and definitely not the slang used for… well ya know…
They had the name before the restaurant. Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian formed the band in 1980 and released their first album independently. Then they were handpicked to help with the creation of Cyndia Lauper’s classic record She’s So Unusual… they played a similar role to what the band toto did on michael Jackson thriller.
They helped arrange her #2 hit Girls Just Wanna Have fun and Rob Hyman actually co-wrote time after time with Cyndi and actually sang on it as well. This gave the band momentum and they signed as a band to a Columbia records and released the double platinum album Nervous Night that had 3 top 40 hits, Where do the Children go that hit #38 and Day by Day that went to #18 and their signature song and today’s feature And We Danced .
With a classic MTV video this song touched a chord with 80s kids with it’s singalong chorus and anthemic music. The band opened Live aid in 85 much to the chagrin of founder Bob Geldoff which they’ll explain next and then after their success waned they remade themselves… and had a big comeback. Up next the 2 principles tell us the story. now as we go into this interview. I want to thank our sponsor Zenni. the glasses I always wear. Zenni really lives up to their slogan.

I was lucky enough to see the band live in Pittsburgh opening for Loverboy.
Nervous Night was our soundtrack that year in college. My roommate and I had the "it room" where lots of people just hung out and listened to or played music.
I wore my Hooters shirt to classes the following day and the professor turned our Lit. class into "Hooters Appreciation Hour" so I explained to him what a hooter is and the band's "sound."
Everyone in the class had a ball taking time off the books and talking music in its place since The Hooters were seemingly appealing to everyone who'd heard them or heard of them or just loved the quirky name.

Huge Hooters fan since She's So Unusual...and as for Zombies, makes sense that they are Jewish cuz the lyrics to Zombies are the Torah, Old Testament, word for word...plus it's pretty cool that my fave female singer, Sandra (the Voice of Enigma & the European Madonna in the 80s) covered it with her kids in 2007 on her album Art of Love & it was a hit in Poland & Germany, brilliant cover, I saw the Hooters reunited at NYC's BB Kings club (when they put out the awesome Time Stand Still CD), met them after the show, asked what they thought of Sandra's Zombies cover, and they didn't know about it!! And my fave is Satellite, from One Way Home...a brilliant satire on televangelists, which is just as relevant today with the MAGA cult, QAnon & wacked conspiracy theorists...the vidclip is just as hilarious and on point...great interview & episode Adam, one of my fave bands, oh they also used to be called Baby Grand at the end of the 70s & made 2 albums on Arista, both produced by Rick Chertoff, and at the end of the 90s, Eric produced & collaborated on the great, forgotten, overlooked & underrated Canadian artist Amanda Marshall, her 2nd album Tuesday's Child...amazing stuff...

I didn't realize these guys were behind Cyndi Lauper's smash album She's So Unusual. But there is more. The 1987 solo debut for Patty Smyth was basically her with the Hooters backing her. The single Never Enough is distinctly a Hooters song with the killer Patty Smyth vocals. The classic Downtown Train on that album precedes Rod Stewart's hit.

Actually, a piece of random trivia- Patty Smyth's "Never Enough" was a slightly rewritten song from one of Rob and Eric's earlier bands, Baby Grand!! Also titled "Never Enough," it's the lead-off track on BG's self-titled album from around '77, and they basically revived it for Smyth 10 years later. You can hear the similarities between the two "Never Enough"s, particularly the choruses!

I saw that I Want My 80s tour as well in Detroit (I am originally fro mPhilly.) It was such an amazing night except it was rain or shine and guess what it did? And, yup... it was outdoors with just some crappy overhang. Eh, the pics and videos turned out great and I still had a blast but the car ride home (three hours) wasn't fun so we stopped and got a hotel. I'm surprosed how reasonable tickets were.

@@JenniferMiller-r8v There were tornado watches all around Indianapolis and we got rained on a few times (once during the "Noah" verse of "All You Zombies" which was perfect to my mind). Listened to Rick's last two songs on my way back to the car park as the three guys down the aisle were on their eighth beer run and I'd had enough. I saw The Hooters and that was what I came for. As their bus broke down on the way to the show, I was thankful it went off. Don't think I or the band could go another 38 years, but I'd still make the attempt.

Fell in love with that and Zombies but was in Clash Clan and could tell I just could not let on about it. I hid the cassette in a special pouch of my backpack and enjoyed it privately. They really are one of the best live bands I've ever seen because you can tell they care about the experience they help create and I've seen many bands give off the vibe that we should be thankful they let us breathe the same air for a few hours. The Hooters all seem like warm and friendly guys at their core and it shines through.

I found The Hooters or maybe The Hooters found me outside Philly in 1985 when I was a mere 14. And, as luck would have it, I was going to Live Aid with the good seats too! That was the start of our relationship, which actually became sort of an obsession for my best friend and me. We use to cut school and wander random streets around my other friend's parent's hoagie and convenience shop because she use to work there part-time and saw them in there periodically. If my mother only knew! Then came the postcards... it was in the 80s, so remember no cell phones, or any techy stuff, so we used pen and paper. I swear if I had a nickel for every letter I wrote to each of the (at that time with the inclusion of Andy King - ex bass player,) I'd be rich. The best part is that they wrote back and personally answered my questions. Like my personal pen pals! I still have those to this day and I'm 51. Part of my, can I call it 'childhood?' The Hooters were a reason to get up each morning when there didn't seem to be any other or a topic to chat about when there seemed like it was a downer day. There was always something my friend(s) and I could find that was a useful tidbit or hot news to chat about. Everyone also had they're favorite too! I at the time favored David the drummer (and am FB friends with him today, along with Eric Bazilian.) My best friend's heart was broken to the core when Andy and the band separated and there was no clear explanation as to why and in your mid-teens you don't understand that at times the less that's said is more likely the higher road in some potentially sticky situations. All in all, after college in Philly, I moved to NYC, to LA, to NYC again and then LA again before settling down outside of Grand Rapids, MI. I fortunately got to swee them when I was home from Michigan for a high school reunion which I decided last minute to blow off and see their concert in Atlantic City instead - who knows when I would seee them live again, so there was actually no decision to make! Today it has been almost exactly since I have returned from Detroit (three driving ours from us,) where I got the privledge of seeing the I Want My 80s tour with Paul Young, Tommy Tutone, The Hooters, and Rick Springfield. It'sThe Hooters first time back in Michigan since either 1987 or 1990 I believe. I jumped on those tickets as soon as I could! The Hooters on a national tour.... who would have figured? Well, I think these are the type of guys that will always keep you on your toes. As they said, "43 years and still going strong!"

Wow! Seeing those guys brings back a lot of memories. I saw them a bunch of times in Philly when they were doing their reggae based music. A group of us would drive down together from Northampton , PA. I would dance like a maniac. I had a bit of a crush on Robbie’s girlfriend. We hung out and talked for awhile that night. Memories…………

I love music and can play, from playing, the Viola in my school's 5 piece orchestra/band LOL. Started in the 6th grade, all newbie to everything but a recorder lol!!! I would definitely need a refresher for my mind to remember a few things and muscle memory to find itself again to dust out the cobwebs and oil the joints for me not to sound like a screech owl!! lol!!
Said all that to say, I have never heard of nor seen that instrument before much less heard it, and if not just hearing, seeing it and now knowing it is played in this song, I would have continued to think it was a harmonica being played in the song!!!
I learn at least one new thing every day to the best of my ability and I've actually learned several things today, including this instrument and what it sounds like!!!
So, I tip my hat to the three of you for bringing me this new knowledge, and all of the best music!!!!!! Love and blessing to all!!!

I was 12 when I first heard The Hooters. They were (and still are!) like The Beatles to me. When they opened Live Aid, my family was leaving for vacation (like literally walking out the door!) and I begged my parents to just wait until The Hooters were done (I lost that argument) and pouted the entire way to where we were going.
I look forward to every Summer when I get to see my favorite guys (well, besides my husband, of course). This year alone, I will have seen them 4 times. I love them so much that I even have the albums from Eric and Rob's pre-Hooters days in their band Baby Grand!

Ah the melodica. This boomer was introduced to the melodica in elementary music class in the mid 60's. The most recent exposure was through Jon Batiste when he was the leader of the Late Show Band. Jon often played the melodica during the opening music and in the music segments when guests were coming on stage and when going to/from commercial breaks. Fun sound. Thanks for this episode honoring The Hooters. 🎸😎

In 1986 a very lovely girl, Penny, broke-up with me. I was devastated, so much that I couldn't eat and lost a lot of weight. Of course, putting that weight back on got easier as I got through the woes. Then, before my eyes I was 5'6" and 20 pounds overweight. It was the album Nervous Nights that got me back in shape. I played that and John Mellencamp's Lonesome Jubilee everyday as I ran in place in front of my mirror. Along with eating sensibly I dropped the weight and felt great again. But, it was playing 'and I danced' that I bounced around my bedroom and burned off the most calories. To this day, and I am now 60, that that song is on my play list when I go out for a run.
