@@dale897 You seem to be mistaken about my comment. My point was intent and the punchline of the joke. We draw the accent from our family so it is based on a real person that we have intimate knowledge and relationship with with. However in general when other people do it the accent is the punchline and it isn't about the person the accent comes from. Jimmy O Yang explains this really well. Also if any person besides an Asian person makes use of the "Asian" accent then it isn't automatically racist but it deserved to be more scrutinized for intent and the joke itself. The reason it is racist at times is because the joke takes away the human aspect and makes the connotation that this accent is other and not even speaking of the person(s).

They never fail to bring tears to my eyes with their compassion, sincerity, cultural representation and humor (often unintended). They are one of the best parts of humanity, matched (and sometimes topped) only by Aunties. We need them to 'know' the world's cultures and appreciate the precious differences. I can sit with any of them, anywhere, sharing a beverage, snack or meal and always leave the table feeling more 'whole' than when I sat down and that what we shared was the best, ever. Sometime, just bump into a tourist and strike up a convo, following their lead - get some food and a beverage and spend some time if they're amenable - gawd, the things you learn are amazing! Be Safe, Be Well, Be Prosperous and please be kind.

There's nothing racist about uncle Roger, quite the opposite, I'm in Malaysia right now and heard various uncle Rogers on the street scolding people for crap parking/dog for barking/coffee too hot or cold/weather too hot. I feel like the negative commenters need a trip to Malaysia to really get a lot of it. There are a lot of incredibly good points he makes about wider Asian culture, how it is perceived in the west and how parts of it are taken and repurposed, like Oliver adding chilli Jam to food that is perfectly spiced and full of flavor already. If actual Asians are doing it and saying it's not racist then maybe people should chill, listen and enjoy the jokes they get. The rest ain't for you

Asian isnt homogenous, what is it do people in Malay or Korea, have in common with Pakistanis or Yemenis or Uzbeks or even people close to their borders or within them? When you say Asian you mean East asian, and he makes fun of people in the West doing what western people do, which is to take something and make something different, which you can do with food, regardless of whether some Asians find it far past their cultural practise to do so. We know its foreign to East Asian people with their idea of conforming and tradition but it is quite normal in the West, it is in fact what makes the West interesting and diverse and why he does it here and not in Asia.

honestly learning a language doesn't really dictates where the accent comes from. the accent typically come from the people you surround yourself with. It's like when an asian person grows up and a predominantly black neighbourhood, he will pick up on speaking mannerisms and "sound black" as some people would call it. The more you speak a language to people that comes from the "original source", the more you would sound like them.

its so embarrassing of you to use that accent to promote your show for hits and likes. Its so disgusting to those who actually talk like that, as if elderly asians dont have enough racist stigma to deal with.
Egg fried rice…. the way you had that reaction video you had no idea how much my nephew got made fun of at school for being asian and fried rice, what a POS.
For the people who think its funny and you are asian, its not funny when kids mimic his accent at your kids based on his dumb videos telling them this is how you cook fried rice. Kids are impressionable and think talking like this to asian kids is ok and is empowered by this crap.
When someone copies you and talks like that to me and thinks they are being uplifting and saying “fly rice” i just cringe and i just smile while i am seething inside.
If you really spoke like that than sure its ok. Get someone authentic that actually speaks like that then.
No one voted you to be uplifting with this twisted garbage you spew.
Trying to say you are lifting people up is such BS. You just want hits and views so just stfu.

Man, I liked Nigel's videos already, but this gave me a new level of respect for him. He's a smart guy, well spoken, and I love his reasoned approach to everything he describes.
When I first saw the Uncle Rodger character, I did have the first impression of "wait, is this a racist character?" because the voice is clearly a caricature, but when you actually listen to what he says, it's not only positive about Asian culture, but actually gives some interesting insights into it that I haven't seen elsewhere. His success is warranted.

My mom recently told me about how she got made fun of for having trouble speaking English when she first moved to the USA from Japan when she was a child. People bullied her and called her awful, racist names. And even teachers would be mean to her. She ended up having to stop speaking Japanese at home so she could learn to speak English without problems. The problem is that people didn't accept her for being Asian and they didn't tolerate her inability to speak perfect English. She ended up feeling ashamed of her identity. So when I see people criticize Uncle Roger for having an Asian accent, it makes me so mad because it shouldn't be a bad thing for Asians to have accents or speak imperfect English. Stop demanding that everyone sound and act like white people. It's actually not a bad thing to be like Uncle Roger.
I love to see a man like Uncle Roger get so much adoration because it shows me that so many people no longer criticize Asians for making grammar errors, having accents and for being Asian. I read the comments on Uncle Roger's videos, and the vast majority of them are showing support and adoration for this man. That is such a good thing. Whenever I hear people criticize Uncle Roger for being a racist caricature, I am sure to remind them that they are the problem. They need to stop thinking it's a crime to be Asian and not have perfect English. Do they really think that it's negative to speak like Uncle Roger? And when Asian uncles behave like Uncle Roger, do they really think that's bad? Because that tells Asians that do speak and act like Uncle Roger that they are bad. Take a moment to think about what your words imply, people.

The accent topic I completely agree with you.
Asian who grew up in the west, were looked at weird or deemed uncool when the world wasn’t as globalized.
Bringing Asian foods to school made it feel shameful to have foreign smells. Your accents made it difficult to fit in, so Asians had to adapt to western cultures.
Adopting, lingo, accents, and culture just to fit in (referring to 90s to early 2000’s).
There is now a big disconnect between Asian in west to their roots because of this adaptation.
10 years ago, you ask a westerner if they’ve had Pho or Banh Mi, they would say wtf is that. Now, it’s integrated into their language. At least in the US.

@@cl3ment Agree, on the flip side, it has also caused a lot of disconnect between westernized Asian and Asians from Asia.
Not sure about the UK, but there's almost a negative connotation and discrimination from westernized Asians (in US) toward Asian's from Asia. Not uncommon for someone to say oh so your from a third world country. Without having any understanding their country besides surface level.
