not sure if you talked about this elsewhere, but what type of gear do you use in the winter? I live in Canada so the winter can get quite brutal. Slowly trying to get in shape after years of obesity and laziness. Your videos are really helpful. Thank you.

@@MrCdrant just trying to run a bit. For now it's just half hour max outside. I will run on a treadmill if it gets too hard outside. The track i usually run on is in a school but there's no maintenance. They leave the snow on so it sucks running on it.

Very inspiring watching you two run through the hills! Doing Man vs Mountain next year so will be using this to motivate me into some hill runs. Seeing the weather look wet and cold for you guys normalises it so that’s what I can expect! Great vid! So far I’m doing zone 2 on the canal paths! Long way to go yet!

I actually really enjoy the shorter format (i'm not sure what the algorithm prefers these days) but commiting to a 19-30 minute video isnt really appetising when you're busy. A wee 10 minute video with succinct points is perfect.

Living in Interior Alaska where everything is very dark and very cold you definitely have to trick the brain to get out there. A light alarm to brighten the room in the morning slowly, proper layering techniques, good peers to push you, and knowing how you will feel during and after and not before keeps you going. Dark, -20F, snow, get out there. You will thank yourself after!

One big thing I take away from a early workout is the smugness of having the rest of the day free for general life. I'm guessing you had all that done before most people were putting the kettle on for there Saturday morning tea in bed.

i always wondered how you guys did to wake up this early, every - damn - morning. Its crazy. It''s so painfull, but it works pretty damn well. I have been able to wake up at 4.50 evry morning for one month and it have been life changing. The first two weeks are very painfull but then its such a pleasure, waking up before everyone else. kicking off running, swimming or whatever and being on time for work, already pumped on at the time people barely woke up and are surviving with their hot coffee in hands.
Thanks for the tips fergus, i'll try to prepare my kits before going to bed

    Stoked for Johnny!
A few questions from my side:
    - Johnny, how do you approach a Hybrid style of training for an athlete wanting to balance competing in BJJ, Powerlifting, Marathon Running / Trail Running, Ironmans, etc ? How should this athlete prepare if they have a goal of competing in Masters Worlds for BJJ?
    - Johnny & Fergus - How much Zone 2 training would you recommend? Know Dr. Peter Attia is keen on it for longevity.
    - Johnny & Fergus - Curious on training / weight cutting tips for BJJ and Powerlifting?
    - Fergus & Johnny - Would you be able to talk about your approach to programming a bit more? Find it super fascinating!
    - Generally, I’d be curious on recovery protocols. In addition to sleep, etc - how often should we Foam Roll / Stretch, Sauna, Cryo, Massage, etc ?
    - Thoughts for someone trying to run a sub 3hr Marathon, sub 5hr Ironman 70.3, sub 12hr Ironman?
    - Is the Maffetone method helpful if you’re trying to be a better runner?
    - What are some good books you’d recommend for Strength and Conditioning - even mindset, etc would be super helpful!

I use to wake up at 3:30-4 in the morning.
After doing it for about a year I was in so much pain waking up. I would sit there and be so unhappy and in agony. It effected everything in my life. In drained my passion to do anything and I would take multiple naps on the weekends. I just wasted so much time.
I could only keep doing it cause I had parents who supported me and I could have them take care of life stuff. All I had was running and my fat pay check.
My parents had no problem with me quitting and it took me about a week of a lot of sleep to recover. If I wake up early for work now I have a small fleeting sensation of PTSD and have to calm myself saying you don't have to do it tomorrow.
For some reason waking up early for say a road trip makes me happy and excited. And I feel no problems.

For no. 5 it might be a bit of a culture thing. Some people don't keep their commitments and do not weigh the time of others as heavily as their training buddy or reckon that it won't take something out of their buddy if they don't turn up. Maybe then it's best the buddy train alone.

i recently started running more Ks, like 10 15Ks a week for a month now ( ran before that too but not more than 4 or 5 Ks), i take enough rest, stretch and warm ups are on point. but every run is very painful specially at the start. most of the time i just run the whole thing with pain. i do leg day once a week and run once or twice and recover. but it seems as soon i start running all the pain comes back. shin splints, calves hurts, knees feel wierd. is it normal and do i get used to it or am i doing something wrong?

I second laying your kit out the night before. I generally get up at 6am mid week for the 2 zone two runs and just do the 10km on an empty stomach and get breakfast when I get back. Works at the moment. I'm building distance for a half marathon still at zone two on the Saturday run so I eat before that one because I haven't got to sort kids and get to work. When I get happy with the distance and start adding speedwork I will have to review my schedule. But there is no one size fits all it's all about reviewing what works for you now and what doesn't so you can progress.
