Beautiful finish, I got an Edelbrock head that gotten a terrible weld job done to it :( and I might be stuck dealing with shaping the chamber. So this video should help me out when it comes to that.
Gerald, love watching this type of work. Thanks for showing us. Perfect job. Those look like Larry Meaux, is the porter. He messaged me last week. Old school cool like you. 👍👍
Thank you Mr Brand for another great Video , i started showing your Vids to my Mechanics at my shop and they all ask is there any new videos from BRE , thats a wonderful thing Mr Brand to grab the attention of the Generation of techs i have working for me now compared to 37yrs ago....
I am impressed by how you just dove in on this one! Nice work Gerald. Im sure the head porting guy is glad not to do that repair! And I like the logo at the beginning, too.
Welding some LS block as 6,0 liters. What welding rod is best to use and what Wolfram stick. Have been trying to figure it out but no can do..... that`s why I do ask.
A true Artist you are Mr. Brand this takes talent anything can be fixed but in the wrong shop they are never the same after being fixed you sir are a master of your craft!
Well done sir. I love watching these post. All sorts of engine builds all over TH-cam but there is only a select few ppl that will do repairs like this anymore. Thabks for sharing this with us.
Found your attachment of the dial indicator to the quill / touching off the deck, to get the seat depth, brilliant for the simplicity. Thanks for sharing.
so impressive , sure wish I knew you back in my racin days bud... you finesse back to like new what others would have given up on... love seeing this Kuddos to you
Nice work. I have done something similar to a cast iron head. Aluminum is a little easier to repair, but still a lot of precision work. We have used the 30 degree bowl hog as a top dresser for the seat blend into the chamber. It closely mimics the typical Newen seat extension into the chamber.
Brodix repaired my bb3x head after a valve went through a piston. Lots of damage to head. 8 weeks later it's hard to find where it was fixed. Nice work, delived on time as promised.
The dark arts of head repair will always be amazing to me. This is so satisfying to watch. And I always think no way can those heads be fixed and wam bam thank you mam you do it again! ❤
Gerald amazing the will to fix things is strong. same with me, question sir where is the line when its not cost affective.and just buy a new set of heads
Welder here....but never done alum heads....surprised you don't bolt the head down in some sort of jig to minimize warping.....doing it that way how much warpage do you have to deal with ? In my job we do everything possible to minimize warpage ...keep it down to .010
That size chunk of cast is a massive heat sink that will eat and eat before ya see significant curl. The localized nature of combustion chamber also helps. Plus, The heads have already been through countless heat cycles torqued square to the deck. Probably never ever pull that head more then .010 without any clamping or counter-bowing. Drop it on a 1/2 plate of cooper and it will never move.
I have 2 sets of 18° gm sm. Blk. heads. I guess thd old Nascar ones gm had. Building a dragrace motor. There are a couple cracks down in the cylinder walks where thd valves go. Local shops here say they are junk and not worth fixing but I've had engine builders say otherwise. I really want to use these heads on a new 377 combination. There were off a dirt car from what I was told and one of the problems I believe was the fact they have been ported to many times?? What do you think?? They came with a. set of t&d shaft rocker setup and alll the roller lifters and valves with one bent exhaust valve. The valves measured 2.20 which seems awful big but they are sll like brand new! Are they fixable????
I love the detail and narrative you provide, thank you! Does your guy who valves & ports the heads also cc them for volume and sign off, so they are compression-matched and competition legal?
There's just something about watching someone restoring something back to it's glory and being better than it would be when bought. I'm sure you run tighter tolerances than most. TY for sharing! Awesome graphics on the Brand brand intro? 🤔. Did I type that right?
This kind of machinist work has always greatly intrigued me. Tho my life’s journey has unfolded into transportation HVAC repair, I’ve often wondered how I would have fared within the machinists community.
I my drag racing days I seen a pro stock head let go and there was a cyl missing and was welded up I've never seen welding that could fix it but they were amazing stuff
I guess not many people read the video description, shame I live in Australia because I would love to work with you Gerald. It would a great opportunity to learn a lot more about machining. I guess someone will read it eventually. LOL.
With all that welding on the heads what happens to the heat treat and if so how would you get the heat treat back to OEM spec? Do you freeze the seats and heat the head when you install the seats? What do you use for lube when you install the guides - I use Sunnan K-200 or heat the head up depends on the press fit Everything else you did is awesome Thanks for the instructions
By the way I think you do a wonderful job. Wish more machine shops do the quality of engine work you put out. I campaigned a Blown Gad Hydro for a number of years, the shop that did my machine work was a lot like your operation. The owner of the shop passed away. The world lost a lot of knowledge when he passed away. I did all the assembly myself and like yourself I checked everything I mean everything, just like you do. Keep up the great work. I like all your trick custom tooling you’ve made.
That’s amazing work, I did wonder does it hurt anything when u cut in new seats that the aluminum between them cracks out with the new seats in? I wasn’t sure if it mattered or not, I guess I was worried they might crack further down but I’m not sure. I have a set of aluminum brodix heads thAt have 2.02/ 1.6 valves but need repaired so I wasn’t sure if it’s worth fixing.
I have a AFR head combustion chamber being welded up at a reputable shop. Is there concern about weather or not there is a heat treating hardening process not being done that maybe is done at the factory?
yeah, i bought case 580b backhoe and the heads were toast, and you cant replace them, diesel cast welding inc, i sent them there, they baked them then spray welded them then remachined them then used my parts and sent me a fully completed head that look like factory new, cost ? one thousand bucks.
Another pair of old dart heads saved great job as always!
Crazy to me what you you do to fix these things man. Truly impressive to watch this.
Thank you Gerald, true craftsmanship is hard to find!!
amazing work Gerald!! saving the meaux racing heads again
It’s amazing. Watching an artist at work.
Mr Brand is surgical on the big blue lightning bolt machine, turning junk to jewelry!!!!
All in a days work LOL
Are those the heads off of the engine that was in the corvette?
No ship in from Calf.@@brandont65
Awesome work. Nice to see someone fix stuff instead of throwing it away and buying new.
Gerald and Ruby y'all rock! Love seeing the master do his thing. Thanks Jackie for editing. Peace
Jackie does a great job.

Glad I found this channel I’m learning so much!!
I remember 25-30yrs ago you could find hardly anyone that could weld cast! Aluminum heads was pretty pricey back then!
Unbelievably skilled. Awesome work Gerald

Beautiful work. What kind of TIG rod are you using?

You've just proved once again you da man when it comes to engine Gerald Chief thinks so and so does Damon keep doing what you do Sir it's perfect
Those heads look real familiar
How could all that work be cheaper than just buying new heads. That was an amazing job
You are getting lessons from a master machinist. For free! On how to do cylinder head repair. I just say thank you for the video.😁👍
$2300 per head

I have a AFR head combustion chamber being welded up at a reputable shop. Is there concern about weather or not there is a heat treating hardening process not being done that maybe is done at the factory?
The camber had a hole punched in it from a valve breaking.
Do those seats have a taper on the OD? If not, do they shave off much metal on the ID when driven in?
A 45 deg taper.
What alloy filler rod do you prefer for this type of job? 4043 or something else? Preheat the heads?
4043 No preheat
Impressive work! Do you work on Corvair heads?
yeah, i bought case 580b backhoe and the heads were toast, and you cant replace them, diesel cast welding inc, i sent them there, they baked them then spray welded them then remachined them then used my parts and sent me a fully completed head that look like factory new, cost ? one thousand bucks.
