The Stingy Jack tale is perhaps one of the more popular folktales attempting to explain the carving of root vegetables in the fall. The carving of root vegetables dates to around the 1700’s - it’s just not historically attested any earlier than that. Nor was it an activity specifically associated with Halloween. It was just associated with fall in general.

You know, I find myself suddenly wondering whether or not anyone would have ever believed Project Blue Book if it had told people they were seeing flaming bog farts rather than swamp gas when they reported UFOs. Somehow, I don't think that would have gotten as much traction.
They used turnips in Ireland first but was changed to pumpkins when the holiday became more popular in America because pumpkins are alot easier to carve.
Samhain is my favorite holiday. Jack o' lanterns truly became an icon when pumpkins were adopted for this ritual.

If I ever start a new Celtic folk band, the perfect name is waiting... (especially as I continue my slow march toward becoming an old fart)
