In "A JOURNEY WITH..." I'll be reacting to individual guides for individual members of some of our favourite Kpop groups!!
I'll also be reacting to some of their solo work, as well!!
In this 2nd episode, we continue with LAY (Zhang Yixing) of the mega-successful group EXO!
Of course I'll be doing regular reactions in-between this series, so don't expect a halt to those activities!

This man is one of a kind for an idol... off stage u won't even notice him in the crowd .. he maintains such low profile and adorably goofy. But for his creativity n stages he is a beast. He goes all out experimenting with his craft not thinking about the risks that it can incur, he has confidence enough to let others shine on stage, be it a trainee, a colleague or a professional. Even in his MVs or Dance Practices u can see how he treats everyone as a team mate. For "LIT" he even mentioned the names of the background dancers and wanted to include the names of the 100 extras. He doesnt do all the instant popular styles or trendy music styles of kpop or c-pop these days.. so it becomes somewhat niche products ... but he is really putting his heart n soul into creating something new, creating something that will be considered his legacy.. he is too precious to b called only a kpop or mpop idol.. he is an artist

He gets almost zero investment and no promotion from SM Entertainment..as he is not promoting in S Korea.. the man has to do everything by himself
I just can’t thank enough for the time you invested in this, and as I see mostly all of your videos, for real can’t believe you really gave two or more hours of your precious time to dedicate it to him only. Thank you soooo much!! I’m super happy you got to know our precious Yixing, he deserves the attention, the emotions and the recognization for his hard work! I know you must be packed with the videos you’re planning to record but I really hope you give yourself a time to listen to his whole discography, he experiments a lot since his early years of becoming a solo artist and now he has a more unique and meaningful sound. Also wanted to mention that Lay also has his own storyline, that also has so much of his culture, and that his lyrics (mostly the Chinese ones) are really really good! Once again thank you so much for your time and passion.

@@marcogennuso i agree with them. if you scroll a bit on the comments under Lit, people have explained the whole meaning behind the Lotus (which in chinese is pronounced in a way that sounds very similar to Lit, hence the word play here) and significance of being called a Lotus, or white lotus in chinese culture and symbolism. understanding it gives just a little more depth to the lyrics of the song.

A VCR is a video that is created to be played in between sets at a Kpop concert. Videos are called VCRs in Korea. VCRs are videos, that often have a story, that helps transition from one set to the next. VCRs are played in between sets to entertain the audience while the artist/members are backstage changing their clothes and getting ready for the next set of songs. (Fun fact: A lot of EXO's concert VCRs are also part of EXO's storyline and they are filmed just like a short movie designed to tell another piece of EXO's story.)
The clip of Lay being shocked about having fans waiting outside for him was during his first U.S. promotional tour in 2018 when he was promoting his Namanana album, which is an all English album. All those clips where he is speaking English are from when he was promoting in the U.S. Because he very rarely promotes outside of China or Asia, he never expected to have so many fans when he came to the U.S. After all, he is one of the first and only Chinese artists to ever chart in the U.S. (That clip with the really hyper interviewer was an iHeartRadio interview and her name is Ellie Lee, she is one of a couple of iHeartRadio interviewers who are Korean-American, so they are often the ones who do the Kpop interviews, th-cam.com/video/sHQ3hEumIkg/w-d-xo.html.)
Lay is such a good dancer because he literally is in the dance studio practicing for 6 hours EVERYDAY. (In an episode of Street Dance of China 4 last year, where he competed with and against some of the best dancers from around the world as a team captain, he specifically said "I practice for 6 hours everyday." And he meant he does it regardless, no matter how busy he is or what he has going on. He even finds time to practice during filming for reality shows that have nothing to do with dance.) I have seen in a documentary where he starts his day around 4 a.m., he gets done with his schedule of events around 9 p.m. and then he spends from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the dance studio with his dance mentor dancing. (That clip of him lying in the middle of the floor of the dance studio without his shirt on was from that documentary TV show called Only 3 Days, th-cam.com/video/V0jjBXQKhk4/w-d-xo.html, where the program followed him for 3 days as he prepared for his Grand Line concert. This is a great way to see exactly how hardworking and dedicated he really is.) When Lay says you need to have balance and work hard to be good at anything, he means it. That is what he strives to do, and that is why he is considered one of THE BEST dancers in China.
That's also why he was given the title of the nation's producer by the Chinese government, and why he has been a mentor/dance instructor and main PD for several Idol trainee survival competition shows in China. He is pretty much considered an expert when it comes to dance and performance, and he is beginning to gain the respect of songwriters, composers and music producers from all over the world. He is who everyone, especially in China, looks to as an example of what it takes to be an Idol. He is literally considered one of the most successful celebrities in China.
Unfortunately, the political climate between Korea and China was only a little better for a short time. However, since this guide was made, China's Idol culture has become even more restrictive after the election of their new president. Plus, Lay left SM Entertainment earlier this year, but he has made it clear that he hasn't left EXO. Although there are still several obstacles in his way to being able to work with EXO. Therefore, it probably still will be some time, if ever, before we see Lay working in person with the rest of EXO.
We finally got to see Lay in an EXO project last year -- the first time since 2016 -- with EXO's "Don't Fight The Feeling" MV, but he really didn't get to work with EXO because of the pandemic, etc. Everything he did for that MV was done remotely and independently and inserted into the song and MV.
You should check out his lyric video for his song "Jiu," a song on his most recent album, East, which was released after he announced his departure from SM. This song is evidence that he has not left EXO and that he still considers himself part of the group, as every word of the song is a tribute to EXO. I have also read that on Webo he mentioned how he was working out a deal with SM that could possibly allow him to still continue to do projects with EXO in the future. (I mean it's possible, Taecyeon from 2PM left JYP Entertainment, but he worked out a deal with his new company that has allowed him to continue activities with 2PM. And even more encouraging is the fact that Girls' Generation just had a comeback as a full group even though 3 members left SM 5 years ago.) I mean, SM has been supporting Lay in everything he has been doing so far, including endorsing him when he started his trainee company Chromosome. And I don't think there is any bad blood or uneasy feelings between Lay and SM, so anything is possible.

I understand what VCR's are now - I mean, I always knew what they were at concerts (intermission videos), but I never knew that’s what they were called in Korea haha. I think in some stuff Lay is still connected to SM but luckily SM let him have more freedom to do what he wanted back then because he was bringing in money lol
Thank you so much for your almost 2-hours reaction! Love you! I bet that Lay deserves your time! Just for your reference, The MV of LIT costed $1.5 mil, all from Lay's own pocket. Lay himself composed, produced, wrote the script, participated in the arrangement and choreography for the song. The post-production took six months. The CGI is made by an excellent professional film effects company and this is the first time they have created special effects for a MV. Lay is really dedicated to his music. And please react to his "Flying Apsaras", both the visualizer and the dance practice. You will be blown away again! Also don't forget to react to his GRANDLINE CONCERT (the first part in his channel). Amazing stages, I would say. You will surely love them!
Thank you for appreciating Lay. He has worked so hard all his life and he truly deserves his hard-earned success. He has done so much in his career. i know he is now filthy rich with all his music, endorsements, movies, etc. but Lay is still hungry for more. not so much with the financial aspect, IMO, but moreso on proving to the world what he CAN do. probably because of all his sacrifice to be where he is today. that must also be why his relationship with exo members is tight; they have experienced together every hardship there is being SM trainees and even as kpop rookies. currently, his contract with SM Ent is already expired. but he's still EXO, as far as exol's are concerned ☺

Hey Marco, I definately can't get over Lay's voice as he sings!! Lay's power and control to do it is just insane!! I can't get over the control he does as he does the dances for his solo albums!! Lay dancing in EXO is just amazing!! His positions in EXO are so right for him!! He definately can do all 3 of those!! Lay as an ambassador is just amazing!! I definately have to check out the dramas/movies that Lay starred in!! I know he is an incredible actor!! I kinda didn't know that Lay wrote some EXO songs until I had started listening to it and then searched it up on Google. I really didn't know that Honey was filmed in They were able to identify the place as the Presidential Suite Room at the Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel. I just loved the sets that he was using!!! The outfits were so cool!!! The place where they filmed Namanana was in Austrailia or somewhere in the USA. The differnet areas and sets that they used for this was incredible!! The effects that they used were adorable!! I'm so curious on why the boat was even floating in the musuc video but I just loved it!! I really didn't know that they filmed Sheep in Chicago, Illinois because I definately loved he different sets they used for this MV!!! The different oufits in Sheep are just insane!! I just can't over how he was dancing in a microwave and then a sheep appears inside! I feel like he needs to learn the dance of What U need if he can do those kind of dance moves!! I'm kinda definately curious where he had filmed What U Need because those sets are just insane and beautiful!! Lose Control's sets are just amazing!! The place where they set it was the over 500 identical abandoned chateaux of Burj Al Babas in Northwestern Turkey or in China. I really had no idea about that but it is insane and beautiful!!! The way that he chases after the girl is just so cute and adorable!! I have no idea how he keeps his balance as he is dancing in the water. I bet that is hard to do! Lay's outfit in Lit are just incredible!! The effects and backgrounds for Lit are amazing!!! I definately can't wait to see the dance practice if he does make a dance practice to this song!! The way you kept pausing the Lit song the second time and didn't have anything say but just a chef's kiss was insane!!!

Corection Lay works with different producers some of great producers he worked with were Bazzi, Dsvine Channel etc. He is respectful and always open to feedback from these producers which helped him improved a lot. He also work with choreographers like Kasper and has a krump teacher, Trix. One thing I love and respect with Lay is that he never fails to pay homage to his roots and be grateful to the people who helped him get to where he is.

Lay is known as one of the most hardworking artists. I honestly think making music even at home is his way of resting. Which I can understand may not be the case for everyone since that’s also his job and having something other than your job as an outlet is important but it also goes to show just how much he loves what he does. We all wish he would take a break tho we love you Lay!! While he is no longer with SM he will always be with exo. On the day of his contract termination and the day of their 10th anniversary he released a song called Jiu in which the voices of the exo members are featured in the song. It officially means wine but can be understood as nine and eternity. Lay Christmas album supremacy! Yes please feel free to skip if you don’t like to be spoiled especially if you’re watching the videos right after anyways. But even if you don’t do it right after I know you plan to check it out sometime so go ahead and skip the MV parts! Also the hexagon (beehive) is also the exo logo shape! Namanana Chinese ver is way better in my opinion. Sheep is definitely a meme song but it’s also so good. I remember showing my friend the sheep mv and she ended up talking about it in one of her film class assignment which turned into the professor showing it to the whole class. Doing my work as an exo-l spreading the word of exo 😂😂. I think the white things is supposed to mimic the reflection of light in water and him being behind it shows how he might feel like he’s drowning or he feels like he’s underwater. The entire Lit album is also a masterpiece with its packaging and its contents, not a single skipped song on that album. Idk if you picked up on it but he made Lit a homonym for the Chinese word for lotus (lián). He feels very much connected to the symbolism of a lotus flower. Haters call him a lotus saying he’s fake: all pretty on the surface but dirty under water. But Lay made this song in reply and to embrace that by saying that a lotus grows beautifully and thrives despite the the murky waters of his environment. That’s some truly King shit right there. Also the beginning bit is a Pecking Opera of famous Chinese story. I’m not too familiar with it off the top of my head but the story continues throughout the rest of that album and is connected to the MV. It’s be cool if you checked it out I’m sure someone has made a video or written an article about it 😅. Yes all of this is for this music video and Lay had a hand in everything as always. It must be so rewarding seeing his vision come to fruition. He’s released videos of him reacting to reactors watching his MVs and those are the cutest thing to see. LAY WE LOVE YOU! EXO IS NINE! Can’t wait for the rest of the members loved the reaction as always ❤️
Nah Lay is one of my bias wreckers in Exo due to his sweet nature. He works super diligent and I fear it’s due to his fear of losing fans (but also he does have a passion). There is a variety show he was in called Go Fighting! Where he became close to the cast that were more experienced in acting and fame. Since then they have taken him under their wing and have shown their support to him as well as have conversations on how he’s doing and pretty much just baby him (it’s too cute). You can tell they have really helped him, he’s more relaxed and doing things his way now and taking time for himself.
His fans Xbacks are also super nice. When around him they make sure he has plenty of space due to his illness and are real respectful to each other as well (wish all fans were like that😒)
He has the support of everyone who can see just how truly gifted and hard working he is. Imagine that! Gifted AND hard working. Doesn't have to be but chooses to be. Amazing. Love him. Thank you for the comment 🙏🏻🥰

Thank you Marco! My favorite guide after D.O's ... Lay has grown into a very passionate and successful producer of the genres of music he loves to portray...he is incorporating his Chinese heritage into his music recently, as in his "Lit" album and his latest "East" album. Incredible music, an experience really.
Lay produced the "Lit" mv, he spent $1.4 million of his own money to produce it....as with many artists, Lay is a visionary and knows what he wants when creating music or films....I also love his work ethic, I think it's hard to keep a passionate person's ideas at bay...only a constant work ethic like his and the freedom to express what he wants, how he wants, drives someone like Lay, given that creative outlet...you have the best reaction to "Lit" mv ever Marco! Each chef's kiss I absolutely agreed with...I see you Marco, and on your own time you should check out the music on his 2 albums "Lit" and "East". He’s our King! Watch the Flying Apsaras dance practice video. He didn’t release the official video b/c it didn’t meet his artistic standards. Completely chucked the MV even after flying his crew out to desert location. A true artist and perfectionist. We love him so much.

Tysm. Our precious Yixing once had a laptop in his rookie days that had TONS of his original music and early hard work that broke. All his hard work was lost. It broke his heart and he mourned it but had the strength to continue his mission, passion, and vision. He ALWAYS gives deep bows to his fans and people that have believed in him. He really is a beautiful artist, ALWAYS learning, never assuming he knows everything. Even though he has accomplished more that most people walking this planet. Humble, loyal, and he exudes greatness. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Just an additional fact.
During EXO's newbie period, Lay and Chanyeol had mentioned that Lay don't know how to read music scores but he knows how to play what he hear even just once.
Also, Lay can do Chinese Opera. (Chinese musical genre)
Happy to see the second part of your journey, Marco! And I'm really pleased to see Lay leaving you speechless long enough for the end credits to actually roll by. At one time I thought your camera had frozen, because you were sitting there mouth agape for at least 15 secs ^^ Made me laugh so much, in the best possible way ^^ Like you've learned, he's incredibly hard-working, passionate, talented and caring. He loves his brothers, and I was beyond thrilled when I realized he was able to participate in EXO's special album Don't Fight The Feeling last year, on every single song, and not just the title song. Really hoping they'll be able to actually meet up and spend time together for their next group album, whenever that may be.
I often find Lay's songs to be very soothing, either because of the instrumental, or the tone of his voice. But I also find a lot of his songs empowering or encouraging. Some songs are bangers that makes me wanna dance. Other times the emotion in his ballads can suddenly make me cry, like Stay With Me 略過. The past year I've listened a lot to 靈 Soul when I'm going to sleep, and then 飞天 Flying Apsaras (You should check out the visualizer and dance practice!) and ''莲 Lit' in the mornings.

Namanana was filmed in Australia. The pink water is real, it was filmed in Pink Lake. At that time, the mv cost Lay a fortune. Until Lit came out, it cost him 1.5 million to make the MV.

Loved how your eyes bugged out when they showed Lay in the water ballet sequence which follows EXO's One & Only. Lay, Kai & Sehun performed it. There are a couple of "approved" tour videos of it plus lots of fan cams.

He had released an EP last year called "EAST" , He spent a really high amount on the MV but didn't release it because he wasn't satisfied with the end result.

Lay did came back with EXO with their special album Dont Fight The Feeling. But he wasnt physically with them tho he was part of the MV and all the songs in the special album. He also announced that he did not renew his contract with SM but he said he will always be there for his brothers when he is needed. He is and will always be an EXO member.

Others say that both MV could not be linked because of the time of separation of each one, but we know that the story line is not made in order (As it happens with the MV "POWER" that is linked many years later with the MV "Don't fight the feeling") With EXO everything is possible. e.e

Someone else may have already pointed it out, but to add to Lay showing love for his members, Lay put out a song earlier this year called Jiu around the time of EXO's anniversary, which translates to "wine", but can also translate to "nine" or "eternity". Not only does the intro of the song feature recorded messages/conversations with the other members, but the song's lyrics are also a strong metaphor for the group, comparing the wine to each member's superpower (a wine gentle as water, a wine like fire, free as light, etc) and a chorus mentioning "nine stars in the universe. Each star becoming a part of history." It was also around that time where he announced that he was not renewing his contract with SM, but he will "always be the Lay when my members need me."
