    Album Overview
    In 1994, Pantera shocked the music industry by debuting their album "Far Beyond Driven" at #1 on the Billboard charts - the heaviest album ever to reach the top spot. Selling 188,000 copies in the first week, they achieved this remarkable feat without mainstream radio or MTV support, proving the power of their dedicated fanbase and relentless touring.
    Musical Context
    During an era dominated by grunge and commercial rock, Pantera deliberately went against industry trends. While bands like Metallica softened their sound, Pantera doubled down on their aggressive groove metal style. The album represented a middle finger to musical conformity, with Vinnie Paul stating they intentionally wanted to be "even more extreme."
    Personal Struggles and Inspiration
    The album's songs drew from deeply personal experiences:
    "25 Years" explored Anselmo's dysfunctional relationship with his father
    "I'm Broken" reflected Anselmo's vulnerability due to chronic back pain
    "Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills" captured raw personal experiences
    "5 Minutes Alone" originated from a bizarre lawsuit threat
    Recording and Creative Process
    Unique album details:
    Recorded in Nashville at Abtrax Recording
    No pre-production demos
    Included a Black Sabbath "Planet Caravan" cover
    Provocative original artwork featuring a drill (modified for retail)
    Commercial and Critical Impact
    Peaked at #1, beating Ace of Base and Bonnie Raitt
    Went platinum in USA, Australia, and Canada
    Proved metal could dominate charts without mainstream media support
    Sold 1.5 million copies in the United States
    The Beginning of the End
    Despite the album's success, it marked the start of internal band tensions. Anselmo was battling severe back pain and developing a heroin addiction, which would eventually contribute to the band's eventual breakup.
    Band's Defiant Spirit
    Rex Brown summarized their approach: "Big f*** you to radio and MTV... We've done it by word of mouth and playing shows."
    Legacy
    "Far Beyond Driven" stands as a testament to Pantera's uncompromising musical vision, proving that authentic, heavy music could not only survive but dominate in a changing musical landscape.

      I take issue with them calling in Pantera. They should have called it a Pantera tribute or something similar. People would have still gone to the shows as people still want to hear those songs live. Calling it Pantera seems like it was a cash grab to me.

    Think the massive success of Far Beyond Driven was directly related to the masterpiece that was (and still is) Vulgar Display of Power. It took the masses a few years to hear it, including myself, but once that happened we were all hooked like junkies and could not wait to hear what they came up with next.

    • @redacted2275
      @redacted2275 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      No, the success of FBD was a consequence of the enormous success of VDOP because apart from the hit singles, FBD is much less mainstream than VDOP and it was intentional...
      If Phil hadn't let the brothers waiting for him to come back from his "back surgery", Pantera would've been the biggest, most improbable mainstream band in History.

      Pantera owns the 80s albums, not Warner music.
      The band didnt "hide" anything. It's really simple, they got a new singer & considered it a new band. Most of PM was written in 1986 long BEFORE Phil joined. This is (partly) why CFH sounds so different, it's because Phil was with the band from day 1 on CFH. They had CFH songs in the set list as early as 1988. CFH is the first album written 100% by Vinnie, Dime, Rex & Philip.

      @ I just turned 18 that year. What happened to me after the show was even crazier than the show itself. We got lost trying to find our way back to I-10. We ended up in a bad part of the city with abandoned apartments and buildings. We stopped to get something to drink for the ride home to abbeville Louisiana, and ended up getting robbed from a gang of about 10 thugs. I had a gun put to my head and everything.
      They stole our money and car keys. We ended up calling the cops and after they took our police report, we were dropped off at a waffle house and waited there for hours until family from home arrived to pick us up. It costed like $125 dollars to get a key maker to make us a set of keys for us to even start to car for us to drive back home.

    That "reunion" tour is nothing more than a half-tribute tour. Anyone who knows anything knows that *you cannot have Pantera without the Abbott Brothers.* Vinnie Paul was extremely clear on this.
    I saw Pantera in Seattle on Tuesday, January 12th, 1999 on the Black Sabbath Reunion Tour. Even though I and my partner were sitting way in the back in the middle of the upper deck of the then-named KeyArena which has shitty acoustics and I could barely discern which songs were playing from Pantera, I had a great time and feel so lucky to have seen and heard the late, great Dimebag Darrell play. R.I.P., Dime and Vinnie. 🌹🎸🌹🥁

    • @bryanc1984
      @bryanc1984 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I didn't get into Pantera until after they had already broken up, so I'm glad I got the chance to see them on the "reunion" tour so I could at least see Phil and Rex performing those songs live.
      I did get the chance to see Damageplan 3 weeks before Dimebag was murdered, so maybe having previously seen Dime and Vinnie live makes me feel more vindicated about enjoying the reunion tour.

      One original lineup member, none of the founding members. NOT a reunion. Vinnie Paul himself told me “there ain’t no Pantera without no fuckin Dime” they literally waited for him to die to do that tour.

    I worked the Reinventing the Steel tour in Dallas. Was very hot that day but Pantera didnt fail . I met Dime and Vinnie at their strip club after a long day during Limp biscuit's PR tour of finding a guitarist. They invited us to drink with them but we declined because we didnt drink and it felt wrong since Kerry King was with them after his mom had passed. Then a year later we hear Dime died and I was able to make the wake in Arlington coming from Seattle doing work. Cant believe its been 20 years. RIP Dime n Vinnie

    Metal was a bad word back then? No. No it wasn't. If you weren't around back then you may not believe it but Alice in Chains was a metal band, or at least everyone considered them a metal band especially on Facelift. Facelift is a metal album. Hell Dirt is a metal album. Them Bones? That's heavy. Angry Chair? Hate to Feel? Heavy stuff. Metal bands don't write softer stuff now but they did back then. Listen to the last two Alice albums (the albums without Layne). They have some heavy riffs and deserve more recognition.

    • @mykull666
      @mykull666 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't know if Alice In Chains is metal or not but heavy music doesn't equal heavy metal. There is very heavy punk, like hardcore and sludge, grunge, and grindcore all started as punk bands.
      Melvins, Buzzov-en, Eyehategod, and Napalm Death were all punks playing what they thought was their brand of punk rock and ended up creating new subgenres of punk and metal.

    Pantera, Metallica and some of the 80's and 90's death metal band laid the ground for the sound that was to eventually become melodic death metal and a wide variety of highly successful metal sub-genres.
    *If Pantera had not imploded, I still believe they would have surpassed Metallica and very likely teamed up with Megadeth to tour and both bands would have taken the gold trophies and Metallica the silver.*
    What Metallica turned into so they could all have personal estates worth 300 million dollars is still a tragedy. *Grunge and thrash metal had simultaneously came into the pop culture spotlight to bury glam metal and then both genres imploded due to their own vices.*
    People can paint it up anyway they want in the present but living through it and experiencing it culturally everywhere I went in my teens tells the story I just shared.
