I think to prevent this kind of overtourism, it would be useful for Japan to start advocating their rural towns more. A lot of them are dying and while tourism isn't going to solve everything, it will at least keep them afloat. A lot of these unnoticed rural areas have a lot of stories to tell too!

I agree with this. Halfway through this trip we realized we shouldn’t have listened to the Reddit and TH-cam “Best Japan Itineraries”. They end up just sending everyone to the exact same places, including restaurants! While I think there is a reason to at least see these places once, I think that were I to go back to Japan I would focus on the unnoticed rural areas as you mention. Thanks for commenting!

was in kyoto 2 months ago and i agree there were more foreigners than japanese people on the streets there. Still had a blast though as I'm sure you did too. For restaurants, I would look up google reviews and see if the reviews left were written in Japanese to sort of pin point spots that locals go to.

I’m glad you had a good time and we definitely did too. Thanks for the tip!

Except maybe for the school kids, Japanese people don't vacation in Kyoto. Foreigners outnumber the Japanese in Kyoto.
